Quote from: Ralph Turner on May 19, 2006, 10:02:34 AMThe URL probably reflects the customization/security process that the NCAA has constructed for its web site so it can track the origin of every URL that it displayed via its "my portal" configuration.

Or it could just be indicative of the self-serving, bureaucratic, sanctimonious mess known as the NCAA, Ralph!

At work tonight, we were discussing possible new names that could still suggest indians without saying indians.  We were also offering up truly offensive names of various types just for the sake of wondering what the NCAA might let go.  For the pseudo-indian name I offer "the McMurry Plains Dwellers"  That could be anything from Native Americans to Oil Field workers, and I'd probably include all forms of Plains Dwellers just to irritate the NCAA.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

How about the McMurry Tribe?  Not necessarily Native American derivative.
I may not have much to say, but I'll say it anyway.

That is the nickname of William and Mary. ;) :)

And it is neither hostile nor abusive!

Alas, The College of William and Mary has been told they can no longer use feathers as an adornment for their W&M logo, though.

They're appealing, of course.  I'm sure it will be denied.  Doesn't matter that the school was--at least in theory and in part--chartered to help educate and civilize the native populations.

NCAA and logic.

Two things that don't go together!

Just a recruiting note -- Chris Zamora a running back out of Vernon will play for HSU next season.  He told me that he really enjoyed his visit last week.  He was very good in the return game last year.  Had a couple of kickoffs returned for TD's.  So that will make four players from Vernon.

FS Matt Gonzales
WR Trey Schur
LB Antonio Shelton
RB Chris Zamora

I'm interested to see how many players come back.  With everything that happens to young men this age in the first place, then throw on the cost of attendance and being away from home... it will be interesting to see how many come back.

From the D3 Track and Field Championships, congratulations to the McMurry men who tied for 4th and to Howard Payne with a tie for 10th.

McMurry women tied for 42nd and TLU women tied for 55th.

Ralph if I read it right HPU's Greg Nixon won the 100 and the 200...great for him to repeat in the 200 and have an even stronger showing in the 100.

MUC's 4x100 Relay time is the 4th fastest (40.30) in D3 history.

McMurry's (40.40) in the prelims is the 7th fastest ever.  This is with a different McM crew than the 40.66 time at the Angelo State relays.

Is that Mikalik for McMurry and Biacofsky for MUC running the promo video on the Benedictine site?

ABILENE – A good chunk of this city's trash – about 35,000 tons of it – will soon become electricity to help power Dyess Air Force Base. The base will use 42,000 tons – equal to 4,000 dump trucks – of garbage annually at a power plant that will be built on the base. The trash will be processed so that it becomes a gas that will then be fed into turbines to generate the electrical power. Construction has not yet started on the plant, which should be finished in about 18 months.

NOW - If we can only find a positive use for TRASH TALK. ;)

What do you mean?  Trash talk has been fueling contests since man began competing. ;D

The trash will become a gas to run the turbines.  Trash talk is a better form of gas! :D

East Texas Baptist announces that last year's defensive end coach, David Banks, will replace Andy Ankeny.  Ankeny resigned last month to pursue other coaching opportunities.

Since it's a quiet time of year, and since I haven't seen this posted anywhere else:  according to the NCAA News, the American Southwest Conference placed 4th overall with 2,430 fans per game, virtually unchanged from 2004.  Ironically, the move of Austin from the ASC to the SCAC this year will likely serve to increase average ASC attendance and decrease average SCAC attendance.   The MIAC was tops with 3,081 fans per conference tilt.  The SCAC showed the largest average attendance increase of all Division III conferences in 2005, 475, to place 14th overall (1,879 per game).  Only in-conference games were taken into consideration.

St John's was the #1 school in terms of attendance with nearly 8,000 fans per home game.  Mary Hardin Baylor (12th, 3,704), Louisiana College (15th, 3,454) and Mississippi College (19th, 3,298) were all in the top 20 schools.

Overall, however, Division III attendance dropped slightly; in 1,135 games, average attendance was 1,840, down 2% from 2004.
