Josh...

You are the likely candidate (but, more the merrier) to lay out the bare necessities about travel from Portland, OR, to HSU. Would you be so kind?

DensLA, if you will "in Abilene" by 7pm on Friday night, then I recommend that you attend a high school football game, either Abilene or Abilene Cooper High School at Shotwell Stadium or Abilene Wylie High School, south of town.  You can check the Abilene Reporter-News at www.reporternews.com early in the week to find which school is in town.  The Abilene Reporter-News has a special online section called www.gofridaynights.com that covers high school football very well.

On Saturday, I recommend that you take in the museum, Frontier Texas, in downtown Abilene.  Give yourself 2 hours to do justice to the museum. ;)

Is there a Ricky Nelson monument anywhere to have one's picture taken with?
OK...perhaps veiled:
QuoteAbilene, Abilene
Prettiest town I ever seen.
Folks down there don't treat you mean
In Abilene, my Abilene.

I sit alone most every night
Watch them trains roll out of sight
Wish that they were carryin' me
To Abilene, my Abilene.

Crowded city, ain't nothin' free
Nothin' in this town for me
Wish to God that I could be
In Abilene, my Abilene.

How I wish that train would come
Take me back where I come from.
Take me where I want to be
In Abilene, my Abilene.

Rotgut whiskey numbs the brain
If I stay here I'll go insane.
Think I need a change of scene
To Abilene, my Abilene.

Outside my window cold rain falls,
Sit here starin' at the walls;
If I was home, I'd be serene
In Abilene, my Abilene

That sounds like a heck of a weekend.  BBQ with a trip to see Abilene Wylie play on friday (they are good every year) and then taking in the museum (which my wife and I did last year --it was awesome) and then maybe a little tail gating before the big game.  This year can't get going any faster!

mhb8904 - Actually, I would not mind falling off a rock. The sudden stop is the problem. :D
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

As a moderately interested 3rd party, I was considering firing off the grill and inviting ya'll d3 folks that show for the game to the house for food psot-game.  If anyone is interested, let me know and we can make arrangements.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

The New York Times ran an article on why schools start football programs.  UMHB s cited heavily for those who are interested.

You'll probably need your own log-in, but the process is free and quick.

RICHARDSON, Texas --- Fred Jacoby, the first commissioner of the American Southwest Conference, announced his retirement after 10 years as the top league executive.

Jacoby, 78, began his tenure with the intercollegiate athletics league in May 1996, and led expansion of the ASC from eight to 16 members to form a strong regional athletic conference that includes institutions in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Jacoby shepherded conference member institutions from NAIA and NCAA Division II affiliations to NCAA Division III membership. The ASC gained voting status as a Division III conference August 1, 1998.

Following Jacoby's decision to retire from the conference, the ASC Council of Presidents appointed Amy Carlton interim commissioner, effective July 2006.

More at the ASC web site and the Dallas Morning News

Good luck to Jacoby, a man who has had a huge impact on intercollegiate athletics in Texas and beyond over the last fifty years.

Wow.  Hard to believe that Jacoby is 78.

I sent Dens a note about this, but right now there is a $320 fare on AA from Portland to Abilene with available seats on the weekend in question.   Intineraries leaving Friday AM, returning either sunday AM or PM are available.  Can't imagine getting between those two cities much cheaper than that; on SW you'd have to book two tickets due to the Wright Amendment.

Well guys,

It's great to be back in Texas.  However, it was also kind of hard to leave Costa Rica.  It is truly a garden spot with the friendliest people I have ever met outside of the USA.  Oh, by the way, the fishing was pretty good too (see below).  These was one of the five sailfish my wife and I boated on a one day tip off the coast.  Wait till you hear about the 500 lb. marlin that got away. ;D ;D ;D ;)

This board is going to start heating up soon.  I hope to hear some news at the Texas Coaching Convention at the end of the month that I can pass on.  I am back to listening and the occasional post.

Go Roos !!  Go Cru !!
