dballa, I see where the fans in Brownwood are adding a $250,000 Vidiwall to Gordon Wood Stadium.

They are trying to attract more and better quality playoff games, especially the 5A games.  The problem is that Brownwood is kinda in the wrong place to get playoff games.  They are south of I-20 by 50 miles.  They aren't between the usual districts that meet in the playoffs.  I wonder if the community will get any 5A playoff games.

Ralph last year they got the Abilene High/Weatherford playoff game.  I don't think it will be that hard to get early playoff games.  But ones later on will be difficult with everybody wanting to play at Div I schools or in NFL stadiums.  The biggest problem with getting the 5A playoff games is seating.  I was at the AHS/WHS game last year and the place was packed.  AHS fans had to go on the WHS side.

One thing I've always thought would be a great addition would be to make the scoreboard side an enclosed seating area kind of like the horseshoe shape of the San Angelo field.  It wouldn't impact HPU sports but would impact playoff a lot of Brownwood and other playoff games.

the video wall should be a great addition to the field.

dballa, I wish that I could have seen the pro forma on the business plan to purchase the Vidiwall.  How many football playoff games per season, with fans buying supper at Underwood's Bar-B-Q, did they determine that would need to earn to pay off the Vidiwall? ???

After looking at some of the info on the McM traditions and various native american tribes, or as one person said, plains indians, I thought... "Would the McMurry Plainsmen be a good choice that could honor all of the tribes and say Indians without saying Indians?"
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Auburn University has 3 traditions for its nicknames.  Various sources report that they have been known as the Plainsmen, the Tigers, and of course, WAR EAGLE! (You gotta yell it!  ;) ;D  It makes 'Bama fans choke!)  Tiger is the name of the Eagle (currently Tiger VI).

Plainsmen probably won't cut it!

Funny thing, I was thinking Plainsmen as well ...

Having been born in Alabama, and reared by a die-hard Alabama fan, I know the cringing caused by the words WAR EAGLE!  I turned Auburn fan in high school in opposition to my dad the Tide fan.  Ah the rebellious years!  I even converted from Cowboy fan to Redskins fan to be contrary. ;D

I think Plainsman might be a good way around the NCAA mess.  I would like to hear what some of the McM alums have to say about that nickname.  It might be a better choice than spending a lot of money on a legal challenge.

Now remember that this is the NCAA.

Plaisnmen is too gender-specific.  It must be Plainsmen and/or Plainswomen and who knows what else might offend someone in the PC Police! :-\ ::)

I listed some links to local newspaper coverage here.

If you can have CowBOYS I don't know why Plainsmen would be problematic.  Of course we are talking about the NCAA.

Ron and Ralph, Great points.  You made me laugh!  :D

Here is an article written by former HPU president Dr. Don Newbury from the Brownwood Bulletin.  Just thought I would throw it out there if nobody else has read it.  His column goes out in many newspapers all over.

Josh Bowerman

Steve Freeman, the Head Coach and AD at Brownwood, is my former HS football coach.  The vidiwall is par for the course.

Once that's in, venerable Gordon Wood Stadium will be all jazzed up.  I'm not sure I'd recognize it anymore.   ;)

News from ETBU:  Report Sunday, begin practices on Wednesday.  First full-pads practice on Friday (18 Aug), two-a-days on the 19th.

"ETBU coach Ralph Harris said he expects 140-150 players to report Sunday, including over 90 freshmen and new recruits."

the ncaa cant argue with the school if it has solid support from a tribe in or around the area of the school but first the school must seek permission from the tribe to use their name
