If someone in this area sent me a private message yesterday, something seems to be wrong with it and I cannot retrieve it.  Please resend.  Thanks, guys.

The NCAA 2006-2007 DIII Manual states the following in 17.11.5.3.(c):

(c) Preseason Scrimmage. One informal preseason practice scrimmage which may be conducted during the preseason practice period against outside competition (conducted without publicity or official scoring and provided neither team misses class); (Adopted: 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, Revised:1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 1/10/05).

I am not sure what the NCAA consideres "publicity."  Is a line in a news article or Blog considered publicity?  I haven't seen or hear of any scrimmages on TV or Radio.  The initial article was taken off of the HPU athletic web site.  I posted it on here to provide info about HPU football team reporting.  If I can figure out how to edit the post with the reference to the scrimmage, I will edit that section out.

If it's the same one I received yesterday you dont want it.  It looks like spam.  I got an email notifying me that a private message had been sent to me. It contained a few links and just by looking at the names you dont want to click on them.  I logged in here and even though the inbox indicated that I had 3 messages 1 new, I only had 2 old messages

It's probably related to this:

News: About personal messages: After last night's spam attempt by a newbie, junior varsity members are now prohibited from sending personal messages. They can still receive them.

I've got one of these "phantom" messages in my inbox, too.

hpudad and HPU Athletic Web Master,

In the past it has been a violation of NCAA rules to announce ("advertise") a D3 preseason scrimmage. Is that still the case?

I've seen scrimmages listed on plenty of websites, so if that's a "violation" there are plenty of schools guilty of it.

New Mexico Military does list the scrimmage with HSU on their website.  However, HSU does not list the scrimmage on their schedule.  Of course NM Military is not NCAA either.

Glad to have that PM thing out of the way--we don't want no stinking viruses!

Quick question for other HSU folks:

What's the rationale behind our playing UWSP and Linfield at 6 p.m.?  I was always under the impression that we could not schedule night games at Shelton Stadium due to NCAA regulations for lighting at football games.  Even at 6 p.m., I'd think that it would be too dark to finish without lights.

Any insights would be appreciated.

I would bet that what they mean is that a school does not go out and promote a scrimmage like a game.  For example if HSU gets TCU or Baylor to scrimmage them and then they promote it to raise money or attandance.  Although that would be a pretty cool scrimmage!

I would think that publicity would be an official press release from the university.  Not what a fan declares on a message board.

I tried to make a call and find out, but got voice mail.  i'll see what I can find out, but my first thought is that maybe the game isn't on campus.  Maybe they are going to play at shotwell.  If they are expecting bigger than usual crowds due to the match up, that would make sense, especially since McM is playing everygame at the new Indian Stadium.  They also might be trying to keep the UWSP and Linfield players from keeling (no  pun intended) over in the Texas heat.  Imagine the climatic shock playing in Texas in early September will cause when your idea of really hot is usually mid 90's, and in September in Texas mid-90's is still a cold front.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

From the McMurry site http://www.mcm.edu/athletics/football/081306.html:

Second year head coach Joe Crousen and his staff welcomed 116 players to begin practice for the 2006 football season Saturday. The McMurry Indians, coming off their most successful season in 2005 since 2000 with a 5-5 record, held the teams' first practice Sunday night at 7:05 p.m. in a helmets-only workout.

I know that Shelton Stadium has lights are they not regulation?  The JV played under them each game last year.

JV games aren't sanctioned contests the way regular season and playoff varsity games are.  I'm sure that's the explaination for that--because we were playing night JV games even back when I was a student there.

BTW, I was on the McM campus a couple of weeks ago, and the new turf surface at the stadium looks good.

Question, though:  Are the bleachers new, or have they just been refurbished and painted.  My wife, who's a McM grad and I are under the impression they've been refurbished rather than replaced.  Curious more than anything else.

Info always appreciated.

Yeah, but you don't want to kill'em, just slow'em down a bit.  Besides all playing at 6 does is move the sun a little lower.  It's 90+ til 8:30 or 9 o'clock
