I guess HSU has had some night games in the past.  I found this press release on the webiste from August 2004:

HSU will open its season on Thursday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. when it hosts Sul Ross State in the first varsity night game at Shelton Stadium.

It's quite possible that whatever problem that existed with the lights when I was there has been fixed.

From the UMHB website:

The 2006 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team hit the practice field for the first full-team workout of the fall Tuesday morning. The coaching staff put 167 players through a two-and-a-half hour workout in steamy conditions. The Crusaders return five offensive starters and six defensive starters from last year, so there are some holes to fill in fall camp.

"I say it every year but it's true, this is probably the best recruiting class we've brought in here," Crusaders Head Coach Pete Fredenburg said. "It is exciting to see the young guys out here working and we saw some really good things for a first day. We also really saw some positive things from some of our returners on the offensive and defensive lines. We think some of those returners are ready to really step up and do some good things for us this season."

The Crusaders went 9-2 last season and won the American Southwest Conference championship. UMHB advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The Crusaders will work out every morning this week at 8:45 AM at the practice fields at the Crusader Sports Plex. The players will then put on the pads for the first time this fall on Saturday morning at 8:45 AM.

The Crusaders open the 2006 season with a road trip to Newport News, Virginia to take on Christopher Newport University on September 9th. That game will kick off at 12:00 PM Central Time. UMHB season tickets will be available for purchase after August 21stby calling (254) 295-4216.

My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

They (HSU) have already started.  I haven't seen a press release on how many yet.  I'll guess about 175 though.

Josh Bowerman

Thanks, Z.  You and I should get together at the Linfield game for formal introductions--I always enjoy meeting the folks of the guys on the team.

Sounds good.  You will have to come over and get some BBQ!  I'll be grilling.  Last year I met minni.  He let me use his grill that was already set up in the parking lot.

I'd say we're about due for another Minni sighting pretty soon...   :)

For all the fans and parents of ASC/SCAC players out there, here's a list of the games I'm planning to cover (photographically) for d3football.com this season:

09/09:     McMurry at Austin College

09/16:     Louisiana College at McMurry
              Linfield at Hardin-Simmons

09/30:     Austin College at Trinity

10/07:     Hardin-Simmons at Mary Hardin-Baylor

10/14:     Millsaps at Austin College

11/04:     Wisconsin-Whitewater at Mary Hardin-Baylor (tentative)

11/11:     McMurry at Hardin-Simmons

Due to the restructuring of the ASC schedule, editorial needs for the site, my fall weekend work  commitments, and squeezing in some family time, I'm unfortunately going to miss shooting SRSU, MC, ETBU and HPU this season--unless there's a playoff game involving one of these squads.  My apologies to all of the parents and fans of these teams--I can (unfortunately) only be in one place at a time.  I promise to try to get to your teams' games soon.

I do hope that fans and parents will check out the photo galleries after the game(s), and realize that purchasing prints from d3football.com goes a long way toward keeping this site up, running and free.

Please say "Hi" if you see me on the sidelines at one of these games, it would be nice to have faces to go with screen names.  :)

I can't wait for the season to open!

Concerning the night games at HSU...I once had a discusion with the AD at HSU and he said that the ASC has the rule abou the lights being high enough.  The Sul Ross game a few years ago was a non-conference game.

That would make sence -- both of the 6:00pm games are non-conference games.  I haven't really noticed that they were low or bad or anything.  I could see the players out there ~ and the ball!  :)

Josh Bowerman

It does make sense, but now I'm curious about the rule.   ???
