I think teams resort to trick plays when they don't match up well.

Personally I use them cause they make me feel like a big man.

I think that we get a good idea of UMHB's unified pass defense against McMurry this weekend.

Dusty Thornhill is as athletically talented a receiver as we will see in D3 and Bert Green is an All-American Sprinter [2006 100 meter time of 10.57 100 Meters was 9th best in D3 last year, and #3 leg of the runner-up 400 M relay was 40.57sec ; their Nationals prelim 40.40 sec time is 8th best ever  (Look under the Archives).]

This game will test the unified UMHB pass defense with its QB rush/pressure, its pass coverage, and LB support/blitz.   I think that it will be a good measure for UMHB to evaluate itself for the really talented teams they will see in the playoffs, if they make it.

CNU's long pass gains were on a fake punt and a toss pass.  Should we have covered the toss pass, yes, but that is a coverage issue that teams early in the year can make, not an issue of your athletic talent or speed over ours.

Hey Crualum, one of the deep passes that our guys burnt UMHB on was indeed a toss pass for 95 yards. However, that play was sadly called back. One was on a fake punt that was covered fairly well, but Rob Rodriguez made an amazing move that left 2 UMHB defenders on the ground. So much for athletic talent being superior. The other one was legit straight up speed. UMHB has a great run defense, but against a great passing team I think they will struggle.

Bill McCabe

Ralph, you are absolutely right.  UMHBs best pass defense has been a great rush.  I have said for 2 years that Kubiak is an all american safety and he is very, very fast.  He will make big plays.  Personally, I like it when UMHB brings their LBs because they are very fast, too.  They create huge problems for opposing offensive lines.  I would love to see the game this weekend.

I realize that I'm probably way late on this one, but I just noticed today that HSU is ranked pretty darn high.  I did get one look at them last year on their worst day possible, but thinking back, I can't imagine that the group I saw could have morphed into a team worthy of a number 6 ranking over the off season, especially since they tapered off quite a bit at the end of the season.  Of course, I really can't speak in declarative terms given that I just am not familiar enough with them, but can any non-biased folks comment on why they are ranked so highly?

Not to be flippant, but ... define "trick play."  ;)

Wonder if you saw them with their current quarterback.

TU2698, HSU played with their 2nd and 3rd string QB for most of last year.

The loss to TLU was with their 3rd string QB. I thought that TLU was the most dramatic underperformer of the 2005 season in the conference.  (They caught Trinity in Week #2 as their first game to TU's second game.  They lose to UMHB by a TD.  They lose to SRSU.???)

The TLU loss was a very talented team finally playing their game on the day that they needed.  They hit HSU hard and the depleted Cowboys were unable stop them that day.

I saw the Linfield-HSU game and I can see HSU's potential.  You just don't beat a WIAC and a Linfield and not attract attention.  I believe that the voters understand what an excellent field general that Jordan Neal is and he is back for a 6th year ( ;D).

(I wonder if McMurry started a seminary, if we could keep some good players around that long?   :-\ ::) ;) )

Thanks, Pat!  I, too, was curious.  If I had seen a "Pat Coleman-ordained Sabbatical notice", then I would have understood.

I knew that when Kubiak was a freshman that his nick name in the secondary was "White Lighting"

HSU is ranked in the top 10 because they are very talented.  With the return of their QB, they are better than the team at the end of last season.  Their win over Linfield deserves a Top 10 ranking.

I would think that cost and maybe even academics might have had something to do with not playing on Sunday.  Has anyone heard why they didn't play on Sunday?
And why Trinity and Depauw did? I suppose that it would get in the way of watching all the NFL games.  I feel bad for those players who might come up short at the end of the season, that's all.

TLU2698

If you remember last years game HSU was driving to go ahead when they threw an interception.  I want to say that we were inside the TLU 30 yard line.  In addition it seemed that Hinojosa was just a bit off on his throws.  Overthrowing open receivers several times.  I was at the game and that game last year was up for grabs until the final whistle blew.  HSU almost won that game and in my opinion should have.

Now this years team is much more explosive than last year.  That is with Galusha who can score from anywhere on the field at any time he has the ball.  Speaking of a fast White Boy.  This guy is amazing but anyone who has seen him play knows this already.  Then throw in Carrillo.  This receiver is also very dangerous.  He is very strong and if he breaks a tackle he also is gone.  He did that on Linfield for about a 60 yarder to start the 3 rd quarter.  Linfield put two guys on Galusha and Carrillo had a banner night.   These two guys alone in combination with a healthy Q. Jones (Who was injured last year -- sp. ankle, I'm not sure he was ever 100% after his injury)  Then throw in our 6th year Qb Neal.  HSU whipped Stevens Point.  HSU should have put up 30 something points against Linfield.  We lost the ball 3 x inside the 10 yard line.

On defense we are solid.  Daniels (MLB) is a monster--just wait until you see how big this guy is.  Deaver is very experienced and the corners have been on shut down. Robinson is so quick that he will get a sack or two in every game.

Should HSU be #5 in the country.  At least!

O boy, are you guys in for a treat?   ::)  The normal color guy for the Austin College website broadcast is unable to be at Trinity this week and yours truly has been asked to sub in for him!!  :o

Just wanted to let any interested parties know that this reporter will be doing his first radio gig this week.   All prayers are welcome.   ;)  Radio star, that's what I are !!   :P

I posted this over on the SCAC board but I thought you guys deserved a chance for a good laugh this Saturday as well.   ;)

So if you don't have anything else to do; like mow the lawn, poke your eye with a sharp stick, or listen to an ASC game, you might want to tune in and enjoy this rookie's attempt to outdo John Madden.  ;D ;D ;D
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!
