In the Sunday Abilene Reporter-News, McMurry President Dr John Russell wrote about the Mascot Decision and announced a $1.8M Scholarship commitment to fund need-based Native American Scholarships at McMurry.

Sorry I am so late getting back on the board after the big game on Saturday.  Duties called !!

I think enough has been said about the Cru defense and kicking game.  I can't add a lot there. If there is a defense with more team speed I would like to see it.

Regarding the offense, I have a question?  Are we putting the cart before the horse with our doubts about it.  Maybe we have not seen the coaches open it up because they haven't needed to???  In all their games so far they have been able to run up a decent points per game average without having to get away from what they do best which is run the football.  In the one game they lost they were castigated for trying a pass and not running Rollins four times from the one.  Maybe they can open up the offense when they need to.  They sure were able to pass more in the playoffs two years ago than they had previously shown.  Obviously their pass offense worked when it needed to against Mt. Union.

Maybe they have not shown more passing offense because they are saving it for when they really need it.  I agree that they are not quite as good up front as they perhaps have been in the past.  However I am going to hold judgement on their offense until I see what they show when they really have to.
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

Weak Safety

While we're talking about shut down corners.......noticed a corner for HSU at #6 and another at #19 in the nation in passes defended per game.  Both of them happen to have the first name KeKe.  TLU's Bonner at #22 is the only other conference DB on the list.  Bonner also has 4 picks on the year already.

My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

An interesting article from the temple daily telegram...

Tip of the hat to mhb8904 --  All three second-half scroing drives against HSU started inside the HSU 35.  According to the Temple Telegram article, UMHB scored on all three drives that started inside the HSU 35.

All six scoring drives against McMurry started inside the McM 48.

Do we see a pattern?  :)

Good feature, Ralph. I play the clarinet and I'm reminded of the summer after my Junior year of high school, when the band I was in went to Iowa and competed, finishing in 3rd place out of some 8 or 9 bands. We had a drum major who was a good motivator, too, which helps a lot.

(When it comes to most memorable HS football games that I played for, our football teams weren't that good, but there was one game Junior Year my Wisconsin Lutheran Vikings beat conference foe West Bend East in overtime). In my WLC college days, the school didn't field a football team, but I played for a handful of basketall games.

Any other musicians want to chime in on the best football game they ever played for? ;)

While at HSU....they brought football back my sophmore year.....I was in the Cowboy Band and we had just finished a parade in Dallas....that same Saturday afternoon, was the HSU playoff game against Minot......coldest game I have ever been to.....it was sleeting and the wind was blowing like crazy!!!  Unfortunately, HSU lost a real close one, but a very memorable game!!!  :)

Good defense means good field position   ;D

Actually only 2 of the three scoring drive started inside the 35.  One of them was a long, time consuming 80 yd drive.

While not the best game I ever was at the most memorable game was the Killeen high School vs Killeen Ellison in my senior year.  I played tuba, and we sat on the top row on the end at Leo Buckley stadium, row 26 I believe.  To set the picture Killeen at that time only had 2 high schools so this was a rivalry game.  They packed people into this game, added stands in the endzones, S.R.O. areas, etc.  I believe the highest attended game btwn the two was around 23000 people, at a high school regular season game.

My friend and classmate Robert Yarborough was playing wide receiver.  He got free on the side line for a long gain and then took the most vicious hit I've ever seen at any level.  The Ellison cornerback, Terry Ray (who went on to play at OU and then had a carrier with the Patriots) hit Robert so hard that I heard the hit on Row 26 of Leo Buckley Stadium on the other end of the field.  The crowd of 20000+ went silent in an instant.  There was no lull to quiet, just a collective gasp and silence.  Robert told me in class on Monday that when he actually gained consciousness he was at the hospital, but when he "woke up"on the sideline the coach asked him where he was and he had no clue.

That play is seared into my brain, and to this day I say that was the most incredible hit I've seen hands down.

Gotta give UMHB coaches and AD credit for scheduling a tough national competitor (UW-W) in the middle of their conference season.

"To be the best, you gotta beat the best."  (You also gotta schedule the game!)

Congrats to the Cru for their success so far this season ... saw them put it on HSU last Saturday and was impressed with their collective killer instinct in the second half.  Looked like some championship football to me!

Of course, I'll be cheering for the Trinity Tigers in the first round (if given the opportunity, that is.)   ;D
