Ralph what would happen IF Trinity doesnt win the SCAC??  The whole Texas Championship could have a kink in the hose.  Would the commitee fly two teams to Texas or would they try and split us up again??  Just something my brain was chewing on!!

Barring Ron's cynicism, and the way that they have treated Linfield and some other NWC teams in the past, I think that they would fly 2 teams into Texas, e.g. Millsaps and someone else.

They have to fly Millsaps somewhere!

Keep in mind what happened in the Top 7.

No. 1 won by a large margin at home against No. 4.
No. 2 won barely on the road at No. 6.
No. 4 lost by a large margin on the road at No. 1.
No. 6 lost barely at home to No. 2.
No. 7 lost on the road at a .500 team.
And remember that No. 6 has a head-to-head win against No. 8.

The only way to really satisfy all of this data would have been to drop both UMHB and Hardin-Simmons below someone in the poll. I don't think too many voters believe Occidental is that good. UW-La Crosse is a better candidate in my book but not everyone has the ballot in that order.

I'm not overly convinced, either, that Wesley is better than Capital, in all honesty.

So, sure, we'll drop UMHB more than one spot, but your alma mater gets dragged down in the process. :)

I am sure the AFCA will ignore the HSU/UMHB head to head result and drop UMHB significantly.

Just as Pat predicted!!!

All the more reason to value this poll over the Coaches' Poll!!! ;)

I agree with you, Ralph.  I don't think a 4 point loss by the #6 team to the #2 team justifies an 8 position slide.  Maybe a couple.  I think D3 football has a more accurate picture.

baddog

Bill and others -- The UMHB drop does not seem right to me, either. 4pt loss to the #2 team. The only thing I can figure is that they looked at it as a loss at home and weighted it that way. Still does not make sense. More evidence that polls are just that. Real championships are won on the field.
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

Hard to understand how the win over UMHB got UWW a higher vote total than last week but cost UMHB 5 spots in the poll. How do you rationalize that seeming contradiction?

Pat Coleman

Please make sure you know what poll you're looking at. Are you looking at the AFCA poll for both weeks? Or are you looking at the D3football.com poll (25 voters, 625 points max) for one week and the AFCA poll (40 voters, max of 1,000) for the other?

Guilty on my part.  I dropped UMHB from the D3 poll to the AFCA poll.  Sorry.  Still seems a big drop.

I can see a drop in polls happening to UMHB after the loss but how can they possibly justify ranking them lower than UW-LaCrosse?  With the benefit of both teams playing a mutual opponent in UW-W for comparison, it doesn't make any sense.   UW-W monkeystomped UW-LC, 45-10, and having witnessed both games, I can tell you that there is no question that UMHB is a much higher quality team than LAX.

Better yet, they dropped them below HSU, a team MHB beat head to head.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

I still think HSU takes if and when they play again.  The HSU defense had the UMHB offense on their heels in the first half.

That must be the thinking behind the AFCA ranking HSU over UMHB!   ;D

Seriously, in a rematch between two pretty even teams, I would always much rather be the one who lost the first time.   The reason that I hope my Hawks don't have to meet up with the Cru again this year...............well, maybe if it was in the Stagg Bowl!!!!!!!! ;)
