That old saying "Defense wins championships!"  UMHB has in my opinion a championship defense.  They are so fast.  They can give up scores, just like any other defense, but chances are they will shut you down for most of the game.  Most teams have been unable to run at all, so they go entirely to the pass.

Wesley has a pretty good D too. And Wesley's O doesn't spend a whole lot of time on the field !!! Should be a dandy of a chess match. But if it becomes a horse race , Wesley has the horses with speed.

Ralph will probably be the best at answering this question..... ;D

What do you think of the 10 Gagliardi Trophy Finalists???  I see Jordan Neal is one of the 10.....just curious what his chances are.

Ralph,

Kubiak caught Thornhill both times.  The first tiem he went for the strip and Dusty was able to shake him off.  The second time Kubiak just made the tackle instead of trying to strip the ball.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Oh that is right!  I remember that now. ;)

I will appreciate a serious assessment from someone who has seen the ASC and Wesley, but my gut impression is that we don't have a QB/receiver corps in the ASC that is better than Wesley.

I read the sketches of the 10 Gagliardi Finalists.  Just my opinion...

Chad Otte looks my choice...3.75 GPA in Biology/Pre-Med or
Josh Brehm 3.75 Business/Psychology.

I tend to favor the student-athletes with the more challenging academic loads.

I have no idea as to how the selection panel works. :)

Ralph,

Are you saying being an MDiv student is not as demanding as biology/premed or business/psychology?  I have a minor in biology (29 hrs jsut for kicks) and I promise the work load for most of my seminary classes is more demanding than any bio class I took.  To further my argument, when I started at Logsdon we had a student that was finishing up his last year in seminary who had been an orthopedic surgeon previously.  His surgical career ended when he developed macular degeneration.  David told me in a theology class that seminary was far more difficult than medical school was because rather than learning by repition and practice he had to synthesize ideas.

You obviously have not seen Wesley's offense this year.  You will see pretty much the same team you saw last year. Warrick torched MHB in their own house. The passing game definitely favors Wesley in this one. You better hope for lightning because this one shouldn't be close.

No, I am not disparaging the seminary.  The info on the capsules is that Jordan is a Graduate and they mention Physical Education.  There was only a slight mention that he was in grad school, but no GPA noted as was noted for Ryan Kleppe.

Now it is a running joke with my younger brother, that if he could get his M. Div. (at Perkins--Southern Methodist University), anybody could.  We older brothers can talk about our younger brothers that way, regardless of how proud we are of them! ;D ;)

If it is football talent, then Neal does stand a good chance.

Neal has no graduate level GPA and for some reason his undergrad GPA was not included with the nomination form.

That's odd.

I do hope that UMHB does hold up better to the great passing game of Wesley, and I think they will due to a more experienced secondary.  Kubiak was good last year, but has obviously improved in his last year, and corners Barcek, Williams and Burriss should be much improved from last year's game.  Kirby has also always been a strong DB.  They still have a monumental task ahead of them, but I think the secondary will be more up for the challenge.

On another note, the game-planning and preparation should be interesting to see this year.  What do you do differently if your are Wesley? They are probably going to still try and do the things that worked last year like throw the deep ball.  Defensively that had a great plan and played very well against the CRU offense.  They don't have a lot to change, however, UMHB does.  The defense will still concentrate on stopping a Wesley run game that is more effective than last years, but I see Coach Harmon and the defensive staff having a few changes is coverage schemes, blitz packages etc.  I don't know a whole lot about the Wesley offense, but from what has been said on the board, it should help UMHB since Welsey does not have the double threat wideouts they did last year.

This is what really pisses me off and what really gets my blood boiling.  Now if you have ever read the ASC board you will know I am HSU purple and gold, but I gotta stick up for my conference and State.

OHIOAJK first off dont come here and start talkin that trash.  Last year is last year is last year.  what sucks for you is you have last years team, so you say, and what i hate to tell you, this is not the same UMHB team as last year, they are better.  So you take your overconfident ass bring it to the game.  We play a different style of ball here in Texas.  If the UMHB team shows up that showed up against my team your QB wont have time to get it to the receivers.  The defense is so fast you wont be able to run the ball.  Ill say Wesley may score 21 points.  This is a Top 5 defense in the Nation.  You havent played anyone like the team you meet Saturday.
