ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Reed (6-5, 295, Mary Hardin-Baylor), in his second af2 season, was a major force on defense in Week 3 for Bossier-Shreveport as the Battle Wings (2-0) blanked the expansion Texas Copperheads, 52-0, recording just the second shutout in league history. Reed registered 9.0 total tackles and 6.0 sacks in the contest, a new af2 single-game record. Asa Francis of Quad City set the previous league-high mark of 5.0 sacks in a single game at Hawaii on June 28, 2003. This the first weekly af2 award of Reed's career. He is also the second Bossier-Shreveport player to earn the Defensive Player of the Week Award in as many weeks, following up Kendrick "Boss" Walker for Week 2.

Congrats goes out to Elex, way to represent the CRU ;)

Thank goodness the NCAA is going back to the timing rules used in 2005!

Josh Bowerman

Bill, I don't know about you, but I think the clock rules had a measurable impact on both UMHB/HSU contests this year.

Especially in the second half of both games, you could really tell that both teams were trying to not only adjust their schemes for the other team, but also to make the clock run "more quickly" or conserve as much time as possible.

I agree, though--I'm glad to see this ill-conceived adjustment to the rules fall by the wayside.

Don't know if this means that Austin has the longest throw in the NCAA or just in D3.  I'm glad he can chunk a football just as well as a javelin.

Best in D3.

The Choctaws will open the season against Millsaps on a Thursday night (8/30/2007). Here is the  full schedule. http://www.gochoctaws.com/schedules.asp?path=football

Josh, doesn't it seem like that rules committee make changes just because they think they should change something.  I hope we never see last years timing rules again!

For what it may be worth, today's San Antonio Express-News has a story that Trinity's Mohr may be interested in coaching UIW.

Go to http://www.mysanantonio.com and click on "sports" for details.

Bill McCabe

Thanks for the info Warren.  I read the article and it was very interesting.  With the supposed "blank check" from Tom Benson, this could be a very good job.

Josh Bowerman

Indeed, very interesting comments.

If UIW joins the Lone Star Conference for football (and other sports), they'll be up against some very stiff, take-no-prisoners competition. E.g., Angelo State, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, Texas A&M/Kingsville, et al., are no cupcakes on court or field.

It could be a tough road for a relatively small denominational venue.

D3 would have been a far better option.

Ron Boerger

I agree, WT.  Just don't understand what those guys at UIW are thinking (or if they are).  It's not like they are dominant in the Heartland and the LSC is a whole 'nother can o' worms.

Back to the Mohr story - interesting.  As you all know he has been rumored to be up for other D3 jobs in the past, but this is certainly the strongest statement by him of an interest to leave TU.   UIW would be fools not to consider him, but at the same time I wonder if the collective braintrust over there is going to try and find someone with more star power/name recognition that would help in the recruiting battles.  Time will tell.

Bill McCabe

Warren, I don't think UIW would abandon their scholarship programs, just because they are adding football.  SA may be a better draw for athletes than say San Angelo, Kingsville or Commerce.  The money Tom Benson is putting behind this is a strong plus.  It should be very interesting to see how they do.  I think it is possible that they could draw off some athletes that may have gone to some of the D3 programs.

Josh Bowerman

That's a good point, Bill.

I'd think if I were a UMHB fan, I might be a bit worried that this program might poach some of my current or future kids, given the large number of players from Central/South/South Central Texas on the current Crusader roster--and also given the areas from where the school has traditionally had success recruiting.

I also think that this could likely mean both HSU and UMHB could see fewer transfer players from DI schools in the future.

Josh,  I think that would be true for all of the D3 programs in Texas.  36 more scholarships, that are usually divided up into partials.  UTSA is still talking about adding football in the near future and that would be another 60 scholarships.  At the rate Texas is growing, I still think there will be enough football players for the programs.   ;)
