How long has it been since they went 2-0 to start the season?

To answer that, it was 2005. They went 2-0 and then dropped 7 in a row. Last time before that was..........only went back to 1999.

UMHB's speed on defense creates a lot of problems for the other teams offense.  If Sul Ross can handle UMHB's speed, it might stay close.  Sul Ross will have to win the turnover battle and not give UMHB a short field.  I think the Cru are loaded this year and it will be a tough task in Belton for Sul Ross.

Agreed!! How's lil McCabe been doin?

yessir,  he is doing well.  He started law school at Texas Wesleyan 3 weeks ago and seems to like it.  Not sure how many games he will be able to make, but we are planning on meeting in Abilene for the HSU game.  I may try to go to the TLU game in Seguin.

That's good to hear.....I have many fond memories of playing with him. I will definately be in Abilene. Tryin to make Sequin but it's not looking real positive as of now.

Bill,

I think another thing that Sul Ross will have to deal with is UMHB's ability to feed off of big plays.  The defense has always been pretty good at creating turnovers and/or getting a big stop after a sudden change, and the offense is usually able to capitalize on it.  This sometimes plays into the field position battle like you were saying.  If Sul Ross is as good as their numbers have shown, I think their mental toughness and ability to keep the CRU from these strong points will play a huge part in whether they win or lose.

On a different note, I have to brag a little on my friend Chris Allman who writes the Around the South column here.  I have known Chris since he was in middle school in Georgetown, Texas. He gives some well deserved recognition to Ron Boerger in this week's column for Ron's previous and current work for this site.  I thought  Chris' column was really good, but I am still waiting for Chris to be as funny in this column as he was in columns he wrote for the Belton Journal when he was there. I think, however, all of us D3 football aficionados  probably take our football way too seriously for too much humor,  but he really was hilarious.  Good job, Chris.

HSU/Linfield game notes are available on the HSU website:

How do you think the two conferences would stack up if they were combined? If it was one giant conference, how would you rank them, and how would the balance perhaps be shifted?

What if there were more non-conference games? How do you think they would fair against one another? Who would you like to see play?

Let's kick around some idea's and learn a little bit more about some other school's in the region.
"ASC vs. SCAC you pick 'em" is now on the discussion board for the south region. Give some input!

Well, I hope Sully doesn't "fall apart at the seams", but the odds , of course, are not in their favor.  One of the things my son liked about SR was that he would play, and play in one of the best conferences in DIII.
As for myself, I always liked playing a confident team. And, if the Sully Boys thing they are not respected, that might get em going , too.
  Whata ya think, SR97?

Hey I am new to post patterns. It is nice to be here. First I am a Cru fan and will be at the game this Saturday. I think it will be a good contest for the Cru although they sounded outstanding against CNU. Also I read some stuff about Daniels and how he would end up at a D3 school if he has those kind of statistics. Do you really think that D3 is that much worse than other divisions. I have played with D1 players and I have played with D3 players and believe me there is not that much of a difference. Didnt UMHB play Baylor in 7 on 7. I think UMHB won, but whatever. Some people just slip through the cracks. It is all politics if you ask me. Regardless it is nice to be here and I hope to see the Cru clicking on all cylinders this weekend. Oh and Mr. McCabe tell Ryan he needs to come this weekend.

Bill McCabe

Livin05, he is actually having to study.  We wouldn't want him to get back into any bad habits!  :D

CNU85

Livin05,

you are in a rare position to know what you're talking about. I have seen you play and you are the real deal. I can also imagine what the USA Team secondary looked like with you and CNU's Rob Rodriguez back there. What was it like for you two D3 guys to beat out some D1 one guys on that team? It must have been awesome!! Anyway - congrats on a fantastic career. I'm glad I was able to see you play...even if it was just once.

I'm just glad you graduated and can't play against HSU anymore, Livin.   ;)

I don't think there's as big of a difference in the ASC between some DI players and DIII--but I've spent a lot of time in the northeastern US and seen some pretty average DI programs, too.  Unless a player is being recruited by one of the huge, national powers, that part of the DI world really isn't a whole lot different than DIII in this part of the world.  There is in that part of the world, though.  It's all relative, is I guess what I'm saying.

Livin--

Good to see one of my old teammates on the board!!!

It did put a little smirk on my face when I heard the the CRU had beated Baylor in 7 on 7, especially since one of the coaches I work with just graduated from there.  Imagine some of the shots taken by me and that old fullback that graduated with me in that coaches office!!!

But I'm curious as to what everyone thinks----

While it does send a message that the skill positions for the CRU beat out those of Baylor's Div. I program, does anyone think that UMHB would have any chance of playing with a team full of Div. I athletes?

Think of the size difference up front, and maybe a few other issues that might come up.

I don't really think UMHB would have been able to beat a team like Baylor, but I'm curious as to some other insights...

However, on a different note, we did match up well to the Trinity Valley's and Tyler Junior College when we used to scrimmage them back in '01 and '02.  Many of those athletes were of Div. I caliber, but had academic issues or other situations to keep them from a Div. I school.   If I remember right, which I might not, but Tyler JuCo played it as their first game while it was a scrimmage for us.  (Couldnt keep score on the scoreboard, along with a few other things...)  UMHB played our 1's, 2's, and 3's, and we lost by a small margin at the end of the game.

Just some thoughts to throw out there... hope to hear some responses.

The summer before coming to UMHB i played in the Blue Chip All-Star game with many D-1 athletes from the Houston area. Selvin Young and Lawrence Vickers were 2 that particulary stand out in my mind.   We had 2 weeks of practice and then we played a game against athletes from the South Side of Houston.  I beat out 3 D-1 Olineman for the starting job. The 2 defensive lineman I faced, both from North Shore, were both going to prestigous D-1 colleges. Personally I think it was much harder to block Elex Reed and Ryan Moseley than it was to block them. The main diffence between me and them was size. I was 6-1 and they were all atleast 6-4.  What i lacked in size I made up for in technique. D-1's look for size over ability in most instances. They want the large frame, so they can mold them into what they want. All the summer camps I went to during HS, I never attracted any attention cause I was 6-1, however guys who were 6-4+ got alot of attention, and I was running circles around them guys. Big guys don't have to work in HS to be successful, they can just man handle everybody. The smaller guys have to work hard to be productive.  Then the big guys get to college and actually have to work hard to play, then they turn into the athletes you see playing on Sundays. I think the main difference between D3 and D1 is size, and the amount of great athletes a team will have.  Where in D3 you might have 5 standout players on your team, D1 you have 22 stand out players on your team and 5 NFL players on your team.  I think on a good day, UMHB would give BU a handful. Maybe not win, but it wouldn't be a walk in the park. Just my .02
