Also, i was wondering, with the NCAA rule of "No Artificial Noise Makers" will the guy be able to blast the cannon on saturday. I know that was very annoying in October, only because we were losing. Any other time I think it would be a great addition to a "Home Field" experience. Just a thought.

Our buddy stealth on the WIAC board reported this earlier in the week:

I had a chance to talk to an NCAA offical and they are already posting rules for the upcoming weekend regarding "artifical noise makers". Here is what he said.
1) Cannon guy will be allowed in his usual spot but he will have to use smoke grenades and use a big sign that says "KABOOM" instead of the usual live fire.
2) The Warhawk band will have to use "air band methods" similar to any air guitar competion.
3) The PA announcer must be subsituted with students that are proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) strategically placed in the stands.
4) Fans will be not be allowed to stomp on the seats unless muffled by pillows.
All above are subject to change depending on how full the envelope is prior to the game.

I hope this answers your question.  Interesting to hear that UMHB was annoyed with the Cannon Guy. That's another thing you have in common with Wesley.

I believe the following helps keep yessir's quote in context: "I know that was very annoying in October [the cannon], only because we were losing. Any other time I think it would be a great addition to a "Home Field" experience."

I would think anyone playing a team with a cannon at its home field would find it annoying if they were losing - not just Wesley and/or UMHB. There are many teams that find the 50-gallon drums that the CRU students beat on annoying - especially when they are losing. I doubt that there are any teams that lose to UWW at home that leave saying, "Wow, the cannon thing, we just loved it."

Last year's UWW vs UMHB game was a slug fest. Very few turnovers and a tight game. UWW won the October match-up due to turnovers, pure and simple. The CRU did somethings that, in hindsight, we UMHB fans all wish they had done differently, but had the coaches decisions worked out, this week's  game might be being played in Texas.

Come what may, weather... poor footing... turnovers... the CRU will play hard on Saturday. Will it be enough for a win? Time will tell.

The major difference between UWW's  cannon and the 50 gallon drums being beaten by the Cru students is that the cannon only goes off after play is dead after a TD.  You guys beat those drums while your opponent is snapping the ball.

And here is a theory.  Your coaches knew from the start that they would not be able to run all over the Hawks and that they would need a more balanced offense to win so they came out throwing earlier than usual.  Problem is against a team that has had 23 interceptions in the last 6 games, passing against them is pretty risky even for the teams that are good at it.

I can agree with that reply BoBo.

I think UMHB had a very good gameplan prepared, but we all know that the gameplan you prepare doesn't always hold water to the other team like you thought it would.  Then you have to adjust on the fly and, sometimes you can find a weakness and exploit it, and sometime you find yourself reeling.
YOU KNOW IT!!!!

Goal Line Stand,

The only point I was making is that all opponents are annoyed by whatever form  home field "noise" may take. In some stadiums it is the public address announcer. And I am not justifying the 50-gallon drums. They can even get annoying for the home fans. Like I said, no team that leaves Perkins - with a loss or a win - says, "Love the cannon boys, look forward to it next time only could you be just a little louder in the future." BoBo made it sound like only UMHB and Wesley fans are annoyed with the cannon. I contend most visiting fans that play at UWW would express the same sentiment.

Theorize all you want, no matter what motivated the calls in the October game they did not work. Turnovers resulted and the CRU lost. Could it be the same song second verse this weekend, it could. I am not predicting a win, but I do believe the CRU will be ready to play on Saturday.

I am not sure if I will even be able to listen to the game. I am taking my sons to the Louisiana state high school football championships in the Superdome on Friday and Saturday. I am not sure what kind of wirelss the Dome has available. But I will be anxious to see how the game turns out.

Go Purple CRUsh!

Kelly,

Let me know if you can't get a signal, and I'll call you with updates at the quarters and half.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Kelly Boggs

Toby,

Thanks. I would appreciate it. I will let you know. I am going to call the Dome and see what kind of set-up they have. I have a press pass, so I am hopeful.

I will keep you posted.

The University of Texas has fired a cannon after TDs for years and I think there are other schools that do the same.  I don't see how this is a big deal.   It is only annoying if you are getting your behind beat.   :D

Exactly, Bill. If you were getting beat, it would get old fast, just like a myriad of other home field idiosyncrasies: i.e. obnoxious PA guy, beating on 50-gallon drums, etc...

The NCAA contacted UW-Whitewater early this week to say that super-dooper mufflers must be installed on the tractors that clear the snow from the field at Perkins Stadium during Saturday's NCAA Division III semifinal against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Following last Saturday's game vs. Wabash, the NCAA is concerned that the extra noise of the tractors may be distracting to the teams.   ;) Just Kidding!

I was at the previous UW-W game and didn't think the cannon was annoying at all.  Its only fired after they score a point I believe and while they did score more times than I liked in October, I think its a cool thing. And if that fires up the Cru because they dont want to hear it, I would be more than happy to fire the cannon myself.

umhb2001

Excellent point!  And the fact that we can't have the CouchCru doin their thing is rediculous.  DI can do whatever and DIII can't?  Why??
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

old ends

does that mean no tractor pull this year during the game??

Maybe it's too much of a cop-out:  money?
