Ralph, Could they have had trouble finding a D3 team to schedule?  I sure wouldn't want to play 8 games.

Bill, I know for a fact that UMHB tried to keep up the series with UWW but their coach would not agree to keep playing.

Say UMHB beats Southern Oregon by a good margin, would it make any difference if then Southern Oregon beat Linfield and/or Wilamette  (one of which could easily could make the playoffs themselves)?

Practically speaking, that might come down to the very last criterion that the committee might consider under secondary criteria (outcomes vs. non-D3 common opponents).*

*I am unable to get into the NCAA website to confirm the criteria in the Handbook.

Ralph, either did loosing to UWW in wk 7 help the Cru in the playoffs? Who should the Cru play  that would help?

Ralph Turner

Good evening, drinkxs.

UMHB will get stuck with a mediocre OWP and OOWP (around .500), may do well to have one win over a regionally ranked team (if HSU is regionally ranked) and will have very little hope of getting to host the regional.  Play two games in Texas and then fly off to Dover, Delaware for the Regional finals.  :P

Had UMHB defeated UWW in October, then they would have had the chance to host the playoffs thru the semi-finals.  (IMHO, they would have!)

I think that playing any NWC or South Region team (NCWC?  CNU?), or a WIAC would have been beneficial.  St John's would have been a great series.  It is too bad that Frostburg, Salisbury or Wesley were not available.

(Even playing a non-in-region team like Rowan would have been good, but the NJAC teams move to a 10-team conference next season.  All of their dates have been filled with conference games.)

On the other hand, I realize that a team must want to play UMHB as well.  :-\

We may be glad if/when Concordia adds football to take up another date on everyone's schedules.

Its not been announced yet but I have heard that the 2 non-conference games for UMHB are at Southern Oregon

Wow.  Have fun in Ashland, Oregon vs the Raiders.  It's a beautiful part of state but the Cru is going to be playing a team that should be much different than they are used to in terms of character that is displayed between the lines.

Typically SOU is very physical and will have big fellas on each side of the ball.  They have a tradition of mining the Juco ranks and taking any D1 transfer that has had grade/character issues.  Their biggest weakness in the past is they're typically mistake prone and undisciplined but will have talented individuals.

I would suspect the Cru should be able to take care of business but Raider stadium isn't an easy place to play.

Sounds intriguing!  Should NAIA be better or worse than DIII?  From looking at their previous seasons, it sounds as if both of these squads were formidable in their own right.  Should these teams be a challenge or what?

Also, has anyone heard of any recruits or transfers that UMHB has received?  I heard of the one QB from Mcgregor, I think.  I thought we already had a plethora of players at that position.  Someone else talked about a transfer from BU.  Any news on this kid? I don't understand how someone from central Texas would NOT want to go to UMHB.  Why some of these small DI or DII schools or even a DIII that we have handled in the past?

I don't think UMHB, the school, does enought to promote its team.  I never see bilboards, tv ads, newspaper, radio, or anything else to promote the team.  Why?  I know we probably get the guys we need, as Coach P can attest to, but the school doesn't help him out much.  Plus, the web site is pathetic at best.  It definately neeeds to be revamped.

It would be awesome to see some of that stuff umhb2001, but UMHB hardly does any of that for the entire school let alone one sports team. At one point they had a billboard near the exit for the school that listed the football schedule (i believe after the stagg bowl season), but after the season it was changed to a generic billboard for the school and hasnt been updated since that point.  I believe that is the only billboard the school has. The website does leave some to be desired but I believe it has gotten better with some of the new things it has done. They recently started doing live stat updates for home basetball games, something i hope they will continue into the football season.

What about recruiting.  Has anyone heard about recruits we have gotten or are looking at?

hardin simmons adds a new staff member in coach barrows. he will be the new co-defensive coordinator along with jim abbate who has been the dc for awhile. This is a great addition to a already strong coaching staff. Coach barrows latest coaching gig was defensive coordinator for indiana state. He also has been the head coach at a dIII school as well as the DC and assistant head coach at a dI AA school.

That is excellent news, cowboyfan.  Thanks for the head's up.

Speaking of non-conference games, ETBU is scheduled to play St. John's and NAIA Azusa Pacific next year.

Gordon, thanks for calling attention to how hard it is for the ASC to fill non-conference games!  :)

Wesley and Salisbury st are having a tough time getting DIII competition let alone regional.

The Azusa game eliminated a  home game so now we only have 4 home games next fall.  Two of those will start at 11am in an effort to beat the heat.  Its good for the guys to be able to travel a little and could help in recruiting.  I dont think either of those games are set up as two year deals so we could be scrambling again next year to find non conference games.
