Honestly Ralph, I'm not sure how the rules apply in Division III now that there is no redshirting. In a scholarship situation he would have redshirted in 2006 with the first knee injury, and would have had a strong case to receive a medical redshirt this season. When I find out how the rules apply in this case I'll post the information.

Chris, where did you get the statement "now that there is no redshirting"?

If you read closely, that's exactly what he means, no redshiriting.

Shaffer has already used a medical hardship year and it's rare that a second one is granted.

TigerDad,
I am not an expert on this, but speaking from what I've observed being involved and around college athletics.  If a player in Shaffer's situation were a DI or DII player where regular redshirting is still allowed, his 2006 season would not have required a medical hardship waiver. He would have been under the maximum allowed playing time and would have received a regular redshirt, making it likely to receive his first medical hardship for this season if he requested it.

Now that there is no redshirting in DIII he was forced to use the hardship waiver in 2006 to get the year of eligibility back, and like Pat said, it is rare for a player to receive two medical hardship waivers. But honestly I am not sure if that is because of few cases for multiple medical hardships, or if the NCAA doesn't like to award multiple waiver requests.

I guess the NCAA could award as many medical hardships as they want and that could be policy for all I know, I'm just not aware of any recent situations involving DIII players where multiple waivers were granted for one player.

On behalf of D3 fans nationwide:  would someone please donate a laptop, a broadband access card, and a data plan to UMHB so we can get live stats out of that high school stadium where they apparently don't see any need to add internet access ?

I've sent several emails offering to donate/purchase some equipment along with my time to help set this up but I never received a response. Live stats would be nice but there's no reason the games are not streamed for video. If fiber or copper isn't available at the stadium a point to point WiMax type connection could be setup to the main campus. Configure it on a seperate VLAN, QoS the traffic, and have live streaming without compromising security at the campus. I'm driving in for the HSU game and I may try to speak with someone in person. Heck this would be a great hands on type of project for the computer science/network engineering majors. Of course this only works if UMHB has something better than the single T1 they used to have 5 or 6 years ago.
