Bill,

I fully agree but from an athletics standpoint that is the best way for the kids at Belton to be able to compete.  It won't happen...as an earlier post alluded to this town is to "Big Red" crazy.

cover2,  maybe they are just in a down time.  It happens.  There are a lot of advantages for an athletic program when there is only one high school.  How do they do in the other sports?

Bill,
when they were a 4A school the football team was better, but when they transitioned to 5A, they were small compared to the other schools in the area and paid the price.  The Belton Baseball team is usually pretty good, and they are at least competitive in most of the other sports.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Another thing to look at in 5A Texas football is if these big time players actually live in the district they are playing in......I know for a fact that some of the bigger 5A programs in and around large cities like Houston/Dallas/Fort Worth recruit players....My High School coach is an Offensive Coordinator at a sucessful 5A on the outskirts of Houston and he has players playing for him that live on the opposite side of Houston...and some that should be playing 3A ball. How they do it IDK....but it's happening. In BISD...I would see where that could be hard to do. Most of the large sucessful 5A's in Texas get NFL like treatment when it comes to travel and game preparation.....I never stepped foot on a Charter Bus until UMHB. We only took one yellow dog on away games....but when you suit up 21 I guess that's all you need. LOL

Seems strange considering that's a violation of UIL regulations and that coaches and teams are suspended for less.  If your high school coach is doing this then he should be fired.

Most of you know by now that Sammy Baugh died last night.  If not, here's a link to the ESPN story:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3776838

What you might not know, however, was that Sammy served as the head football coach at Hardin-Simmons for several years in the late 1950's/early 1960's--just prior to his assuming duties as the first head coach for the New York Titans (now the Jets).  Many thanks to Mike Ditka for throwing in the obscure Hardin-Simmons reference on Sportscenter last night.

He lived in my part of West Texas most of his life, and I was fortunate to get to play a round of golf with him while I was home on break from HSU one summer.  He was a colorful character, but a real true good guy.

He is one of two NFL Hall of Famers who called HSU home at some point, the other being Clyde 'Bulldog' Turner, a standout for the Chicago Bears for many years.

Just thought I'd pass that along, in case any of it is of interest to someone out there.

Ralph Turner

There ought to be statues of both of those players in the corner of Shelton Stadium.

Great idea, Ralph.  I hope someone at HSU picks up on the idea.

My condolences to the entire HSU family in the loss of Sammy Baugh.  To everyone at HSU alumni and current faithful know that we are truly sorry for your loss.  It is the hardwork and determination of men like Mr. Baugh and  Mr. Turner that make our brand of football so great.  To all Cowboys fans you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Yeah right...also seems strange that most starting QB's for all your major D1 Colleges drive Hummer's or Excalades and live in Uptown apartments with 60 plasma's. Or starting runningbacks parents live in huge houses for free. I used to know a big time QB from Houston who was going to A&M....all of a sudden he's driving a brand new Excalade on 24's and now he's going to Texas. It happens....just takes alotta money to cover up. Something those Big Time powerhouse football teams have.....

Bill,

Belton's baseball team is always good and so is the girls soccer team.  Everything else is a toss up but mostly they struggle.  I hope they will start an upswing here soon.

WOW!!! You can tell that the ASC doesn't have a dog in the hunt this year. Less than a week after UMHB's loss to a better team and we are talking about blown onside kicks and high school football. Oh yeah and D1 players with nice rides sitting on 24". Good to be from Texas I guess cause you always have HS football. Congrats to UMHB on a great season. Can't wait for 09'.

Bill McCabe

With the season still fresh in our minds, how would everyone predict the ASC for next season?  I know there will be incoming players we don't know about, but based on what we think will be returning.

yessir

I predict UMHB beating HSU at Shelton in the regular season and then again in Belton in the postseason.....UMHB wins the conference and HSU comes in second again....other than that...it's anyone's guess.

yessir, I hope you are right, but I would put HSU first, particularly with Feaster returning at QB.  UMHB 2nd, MC third, and then LC and ETBU.  I'm ready for it to get started again.

Bill, I feel it is hard to unseat the CRU until it is done on the field. I know UMHB has already began preparations for another national championship run in 09. Recruiting will be huge along with the offseason. Going for five straight conference championships next season.
