etbualum,
I would think that an appeals process would take time and money for the conference and or Div III to sort out. I dont think either of them want to go that route right now. Justifying anything with money does not seem to be a good policy right now with the economy.
The appeals process is a good idea, but I say, dont let them transfer in conference, or have an open door policy all the way.
I think I disagree with these guiys transfering for legit reasons their senior seasons. Would like to see some statistics of how many of these guys graduate from another Div III school, after losing that much class hours and money.

About as many as all the rest of the "seniors" that change their major....again ;) But seriously you are correct, a blanket policy might not be a great idea since some students actual do want/need to transfer for various reason.

I dont see why a blanket policy with an appeals process couldnt work.  Some kids do have legit reasons, some just go to be a winner.  I have no problems with either, I just think they should pay a price to transfer in conference.  If they want to go out of conference they can. If they have a legit reason the conference has smart enough people to sort through the legit transfers and they can be allowed immediate transfer.

Bad Idea.... Who decides what is considered Legit. Too much grey area. I believe they should either allow it with no stipulations, or create a transfer out of conference only policy. Regulating it would be costly. Anybody been to Cowboy practices? How are the boys looking this year? I can hardly wait for Sept 5th.

I agree...bad idea.

The ability to choose what you want to do is what defines D-III. The student-athletes are paying for their education.  Let them decide where they want to go and what they want to experience.

I haven't been to any, but a friend of mine has been to most of them and is pretty impressed so far.  It's kind of funny because he works out in the athletic weight room so some of the new guys thought he was a player (he's built like a tall wide out).  He had to explain he doesn't play AND he's a Howard Payne alumn.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

I agree with Ralph, no athletic scholarships, families are paying the bills, believe young men have the option to attend school and play athletics of their preference. obviously MC is not happy, any team that has that type of talent loss would be unhappy. No different than any of you working folks changing jobs for a better postion for you and your family.

seems like losing Mays would be a big blow to MC.?
Now there is even more pressure on Schaeffer.(sp).
It would appear, from this point of view, That MC is just going to miss a window of opportunity. Previous year's they have had the Receivers, other's the QB, last year-maybe a running game. But not the whole picture.

Anyone else see it this way?

Just a few thoughts on MC and general skuttlebutt around the league.

Desmond was a very good player and I hope he does well at UMHB. I think everyone understands him transferring to a successful program within an hour of his house, it makes sense. But it would have been nice to have him.

Having said that, MC used the junior college system more this year than any year I can remember and you could see 8-9 transfers starting. The recruiting this year much more resembled our basketball and baseball classes that have always been heavy on the MS JUCO system. We brought in about 20 MS JUCO guys, and another 7-8 transfers from out of state.

On paper there's no question MC should be better on both sides this year. Adam should have as much talent around him this year as he's ever had, but it's unproven at this point. There are a couple transfer WR's and TB's who have the potential for big seasons, very similiar to the LC pickups. The defense will be much faster and more athletic. I think everyone is excited, but trying not to be overly optimistic.

But the general feeling you get around the league is that everyone has improved. I think LC has made a jump in the offseason with a lot of transfers and they should be good. ETBU returns a lot of starters and I'm sure they have a lot of transfers. I've heard several people around the league say this will be one of UMHB's stronger teams, and HSU is going to be very good again.

This is going to be a very strong year for the ASC IMO. We'll have an idea soon with some big out of conference games. MC has Millsaps and NAIA #6 Cumberlands early, ETBU has UW-LaCrosse and Redlands, HSU has two huge games and LC has Huntingdon. McMurry has Trinity and Austin College. We'll know early how the conference is stacking up.

UMHB is the obvious #1 again, but they might have as tough a time as they've ever had in conference with 4-5 really good teams rather than just having to beat HSU.

Chris that would be fantastic on several fronts.  First if that all holds up and UMHB makes it to the playoffs or 2 ASC teams make it to the playoffs a tougher conference will pay dividends I think.  I'd rather watch the Cru playing every game like their playoff life depends on it.  Secondly, as a fan who drives 180 miles to watch a game, I don't always enjoy the obscene blow out.  I drove from Abilene to Belton one year to watch UMHB play McM and it seemed like every option run went to the house (it was the 05 season.  final score was 72-0) I spent more than a half not even watching the game, but talking to friends.  that's fun, but not why I drive to Belton.  I like feeling apprehensive and uncertain most of the game.  It keeps me engaged.  So I hope that everyone is closer and this year proves to be a great year of ASC football.

HSU have some very intresting transfers that might make some noise. First is Daniel Lofton. He is a Transfer from U of Hawii. He is also the sone of James Lofton(Bills). He is 6-2 195 and fast. Another is Zac Ereckson from BYU. They both play reciever. With the transfer of MC rb to MHB, this is shaping up to be very intresting. I feel this is still only a two horse race with HSU and MHB with the others with very slim chance getting to knock them off. I don't believe MHB is clear cut 1 anymore. With these transfers and loss of key people on MHB defense and offenseI believe HSU have an edge this year. Intresting note MHB will attemp to I believe tie ASC most consective wins this year when they meet HSU. HSu owns the record at 35 (98-02). So I hope the HSU ends MHB win streak then ( I was part of that team (97-01) ) not because of the record I just don't like MHB because of an incedent that happen in the 99 season.  :P

HSU didn't need much more help on offense.   ;)  I did see that this is Lofton's 3rd school (Started out at Cal)...I'm always a little more reserved about guys working on their 3rd college.

I saw the scrimmage with Cisco. The 2 transfers at receiver were ok. Not that impressive. The first group offense however looked extremely well. The defense looked very good even with the 2nd and 3rd teamers in. It could really be a great year for the Cowboys.
