Question:  What does a thousand yard back from MC look like running behind the UMHB offensive line?  Does UMHB go for 2k+ on the ground this year?
UMHB always produces great O-lines but MC had one of ASC's best offensive lines last year as well. I wish they were back but unfortunately two graduated and three others didn't come back.

Desmond rushed for 1,137 yards on 216 carries, 5.3 ypc, 13 TD's
Rest of the team rushed for 1,219 yards on 222 carries, 5.5 ypc, 10 TD's
Other 3 tailback's rushed for 581 yards on 90 carries, 6.5 ypc, 6 TD's

Desmond is a great runner and I think he'll have a good season, but as a team MC led the ASC in yards per carry at 5.4 ahead of UMHB, and HSU was also ahead of UMHB's 5.1 average with a 5.3 team average.

UMHB averaged 6.4 ypc in 07 with Thrasher and Daniels, it will be interesting to see if they go back to that type of dominance with two experienced backs.

And if they break as many off as they did against MC in 07  ;D

I can still see Thrasher and Daniels streaking down the field. Here is an interesting stat from that game. UMHB had 543 yards rushing on 7 carries with 6 of them going for TD's and one other was a 61-yard rush by Thrasher to the 1-yard line.

The other 36 rushes went for 63 yards.

I hope Daniels is back to form this year, one of the fastest players I've seen come through the ASC.

Toby Taff

Chris,

Considering the situation at running back last year, I've got no beef with 5.1/ carry.  I do think that number would have been higher if it wasn't a matter of learning to play running back by committee.  If Daniels gets back to form quickly, I think it'll be a pretty fantastic year in the backfield for the Cru.

That game made me tired just watching it.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Ok lets get serious
HSU = best passing attack + inproving defense + tradition
MHB = Best running attack + one of the best d + tradition
ETB= decent offense + medioce defense + emerging Team
LC = Talent - no discipline
MC = lost of O-line - Lost of best Offensive player

This means conference champs is MHB defense vs HSU offense(like always)
ETB a in the game 3rd(possible champs if HSU and MHB don't bring A games) LC as usual could be a surprise for most but flop against the big dogs. MC not even on the radar.

So what you're saying is same song different year?

Redlands fan here. Could someone please give an overview of East Texas Baptist and what they'll possibly look like this season? Really looking forward to Sept. 12 when Redlands/ETB meet up in SoCal.

Assume you've seen the ETBU writeup in Kickoff?   ;)

No, I have not. I prefer to get an opinion of those who are close to and watch the program faithfully.

Toby Taff

Ron, I haven't even gotten to the ETBU write up yet.

For RFB,
From what I undersand ETBU has 3 very talented running backs. An average or slightly above O-Line, below average receivers (but maybe good enough in that system), and nothing (nothing proven or with experience) at QB. Defensively, the line should be the strength, the LB's seem to be role players, and the secondary might be lacking in big play capabilities.
In all, ETBU's historical flaw has been a lack of QB. When they won the conference, they nearly blew it with the play of QB's but were so far superior than anyone else in the skill positions to compensate for the QB deficiency. But this was, and is, a rarity. Make no mistake, from 2001-2004 ETBU should have won the conference outright (talent wise) more than they did, but they missed the leader, or arm, or playmaker, or intangible, or whatever it was (Neal, Schaeffer, Proctor, Salinas, Adam king, etc.) to close the deal. Some of the games, from 2001-2004 with UMHB, HPU, and HSU- though not as much with HsU, could have easily gone the other way with a more solidified presence at QB. Ralph Harris either could not coach QB's or would not ever settle, or just could not get a D3 "winning cog" of a QB in to play there. He must have thought he had it in Van Cleave, but it never materialized.
THe lack of QB will kill etbu this year. And they probably dont have the superior O-Line to line up and just whip people in the trenches.

Thanks so much for the breakdown. It should be a fun and interesting game. Hopefully the air has cleared out by then with the wildfires here in SoCal.

Be sure to check out the 2009 ASC Pick'ems contest.

Go to the General Football message board and find the ASC board among the "child-boards" under Pick'ems.

Deadline is 2359 hours on Friday night.

Thanks to Gray Fox and roocru for their help!
