Ralph? Did I miss this before I saw it the 20th of January?

QuoteNEW ORLEANS (AP) -The University of New Orleans will end its
affiliation with the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, part of a move
from NCAA Division I to Division III.

Conference officials said Wednesday they would waive the early withdrawal fees.

UNO chancellor Tim Ryan said that the university wanted to remain but
state budget cuts and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina "have created
a situation in which Division I athletics was simply untenable."

UNO, a founding member of the conference in 1976, moved in 1981 to the
American South Conference, which merged with the Sun Belt in 1991.

"In order to save an athletic program at UNO, the University will be
moving to Division III, and the Sun Belt Conference and its officials
have been understanding of the unique situation UNO is in and
supportive of our efforts to save athletics at UNO," Ryan said.

Yes, we have been discussing this on the General Board.  :)

and the Future of Division III Boards

I outlined my thoughts on those boards.  UNO has about 5 years to get its house in order.

They can work as an independent for a couple of years.  Centenary may have a clearer picture of where it wants to go by then.

In any case, there will be 2 Louisiana D-1's reclassifying to D-3 come August 1st.

UNO is down to 9 sports currently:  M/W Hoops, M/W Swimming, M/W Tennis, M Golf, Baseball and Volleyball.  That is on men's and two women's sports shy of the D-III minimum for a school that large.

In 2008-09, the UNO Privateers averaged 743 fans for 15 men's basketball games including 1300 for NCState and 1085 for Tulane.  The college President has made the right choice.

The women averaged 525 fans over 14 games for women's Hoops in 2008-09.

Thanks.  I figured there was a General discussion but I did not look hard enough 5 minutes before bedtime  :)

Good luck to former UMHB grad assistant Mark Carey, he is now the D-Line coach at TLU.

I'd like to add my congratulations to Mark, also.

Any word on how the rest of the staff is going at TLU?

Has UMHB announced their non conference opponents?

MC is playing Millsaps and Belhaven to open the season.

I heard that Williamette might be one of the non-conference opponents for UMHB next year.

Maybe we can pull out the line from 2005 when we played them for our first game and say that we will start in Salem and hopefully finish there   ;)

I'm glad we are playing Belhaven again. Will it be at MC or at Belhaven?

At Millsaps to open the season at 7:00, then at home against Belhaven the following week at 6:00. I was waiting on game times to put the new schedule up, but I'll go ahead and put it online tomorrow with TBA for game times.

I am no expert but I am guessing UMHB just got the best recruit out of any team in the ASC for next season, and that recruit is Quincy Daniels who will be coming back for a 5th year  ;D
