I love the fact that the HSU game is going to be at night, will only make the game that much better. I do wish though that the game could be closer to the end of the year so it could be a bigger game.

I feel like I am breaking a news story but the ASC officially has a new team, Centenary College.

+1, crufootball.

They currently offer 13 ASC-sponsored sports + 3 non-ASC (m/w swimming, w gymnastics).    Will be interesting to see how their offerings will change as they come into the conference.

Dave Voskuil, their new VP of Enrollment Services, came from McMurry.

He helped start football at NCWC before he came to McMurry.  He was part of the administative team that hired Hal Mumme at McMurry.  He knows how to do the D-III model for student-athletics.

Centenary made an excellent hire.  If they wish to add football after a year or two, then Dave is a good one.

Centenary joins the ASC.

I have a couple of questions. First when does football training normally start at mcmurry and 2, when do the newbies start to train officially with the big boys?

Does anybody know if Centenary is planning on dropping or adding any sports. I would assume the drop is in part due to finances which would lead me to believe they won't be adding soon but since they have less than 1000 students adding a football team would sure be a great addition to the enrollment.

Centenary does not need to drop any sports, because travel will be a huge savings.  They might even keep Gymnastics as a good will/niche sport at the D-III level.  Remember that Birmingham-Southern was able to add sports when they moved to D-III.

I think that there may be a significant number of transfers out of Centenary by scholarship athletes who wish to remain in D-1, which saves athletic scholarship tuition costs.

So anybody know of any ASC players with a chance at getting signed by a NFL team or other professional league?

I know Adam Shaffer of Mississippi College has an agent and has worked out for a handful of NFL teams. Doubt he'll get drafted, most likely will sign a free agent deal I suspect.

Does D3 have a spring football game like D1 schools?

NCAA does not allow D3 school to practice in pads during the spring. All workouts are supposedly "voluntary" by NCAA standards.

Well, here's the actual rule:

An institution is permitted to conduct conditioning and strength training
sessions and limited skill instruction during a consecutive five-week
period outside the playing season.  During this five-week period, the
institution may conduct athletically related activity on a maximum of 16
days with no more than four days of athletically related activity in any
one week.  Any athletically related activity (per Bylaw 17.02.1.1) shall
constitute the use of a day.  Skill instruction during this period shall
be limited to passing, catching and kicking-related drills. Such
instruction may include offensive and defensive alignments, but may not
involve contact.  Except for footballs, the use of helmets, pads, blocking
sleds or any other form of sport-related equipment is prohibited.  No
missed class time is permitted for these sessions and the institution
shall conclude all athletically related activities by the first date of
final examinations for the regular academic year.   (Adopted: 1/10/05,
Revised: 1/9/06, 1/11/08)
