Why is it that at least D1 can have contact in the spring but not D3?

That is the policy that was voted by the membership of D-III.

Thanks Ralph, is the reasoning that some schools would not able to afford the staff needed to have spring ball?

The reasoning is that this is Division III and so student-athletes should focus on study during the spring semester.  I don't think affordability is a factor.

Well I know this is a foolish thought but shouldn't all student athletes focus on studying at least in the spring? I will admit that D1 players have a much better shot at using their football skills at the next level but most will still end up needing their education.

To ask another question how much more time does D1 or D2 get to practice in the Spring?

1. The rosters that are published at the beginning of the season, next September.
2. Any local press release, e.g., the Temple Telegram, the Waco Tribune-Herald, the Mexia News.

Most coaches are wary of losing quality players to other programs.

SEGUIN, Texas — Four ex-Texas Lutheran University football players have been indicted over the alleged beating of a rival two weeks after a game.

The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise reports arraignment is pending for the men charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon resulting in bodily injury.

University of Incarnate Word on Oct. 17 defeated TLU 53-18.

Police say the game argument happened at a Halloween party.

District Attorney Heather Hollub's office says the May 7 indictment names 27-year-old Sahr Bindi, 23-year-old Ernesto Garcia, 23-year-old Joshua McNeil and 22-year-old Jonathon Randle.

The four, arrested Dec. 4, are free on $50,000 bail. Electronic jail records did not list attorneys for the men.

TLU spokeswoman Sarah Story says the four are no longer enrolled. She declined further comment.

As you can see from this attached link, D2 doesn't get any additional practices (15 total) but they practice in pads and finish with a spring football game.

The vast majority of D1 players believe they will play in the NFL and they waste a great opportunity to get an education.

TLU president Ann Svennungsen leaving effective Monday.

When your president gives less than a week's notice, something odd is going on.   There's a longer story in the Seguin paper which interestingly includes this tidbit:

During her short term at the helm, Svennungsen made a name for herself, Story said.

"Everyone at TLU is very appreciative and grateful for her commitment and the many contributions made to TLU," Story said.

Of those accomplishments, Svennungsen has been praised for bringing in a new football coach to restructure the football program.

My first thought is for her health.  I pray that is not the case.

An even greater concern has to do with the health of TLU...

It's getting hot, so football season must be close!  ;)

Yes, it's a bit odd that she's leaving on such short notice. Is there any reason for "greater concern" anent the "health of TLU"?

These were my thoughts...

She is in South Africa.  If she had a serious illness that would preclude her completing her duties, e.g. breast cancer, she would not be in South Africa.

The board will take over at the end of the month, but she has about 6 weeks to come back home and pack.

What causes the Board or an executive committee to take the reins of the school?

Was there something that came up on the SACS review procedures?

How is the financial health of the school in these troubled financial markets?

We saw a similar action at Greensboro last summer.  The president had not been a good financial steward of the school's reputation.

Those were the concerns that came to my mind.  That is not rocket science.
