Question, why do the northern schools get so much credit over teams in Texas.  Coe finishes second in their confernece last year according to their web site and still gets into the playoffs and returns 23 starters, 21 and 2 speciality personnel, ranked 10th, and basically doesn't show up for the game.  I can pick three maybe four teams from last years conf. that were clearly better than this team HSU faced today.  Texas football doesn't get the respect in my opinion that it deserves or at least true south region football.  I don't consider 14+ teams from Penn. as southern teams even though they are in the south region.  Just wondering why it seems that voters carry weight on at large bids that over rate schools from other regions.

What team last year should have gotten in that didn't? 1-loss teams from the ASC get at-large bids pretty regularly, right?
Ummm, Louisiana College? 7-3 overall, and 4 POINTS away from being 8-0 in confrence. Lost 42-38 to UMHB. Why wouldnt they be in?

Here are the primary criteria for the playoffs.

Quote• Win-loss percentage against regional opponents.
• Strength-of-schedule (only contests versus regional competition).
- Opponents' Average Winning Percentage (OWP), weighted 2/3.
- Opponents' Opponents' Average Winning Percentage (OOWP), weighted 1/3.
See Appendix J for explanation of OWP and OOWP calculations.
• In-region head-to-head competition.
• In-region results versus common regional opponents.
• In-region results versus regionally ranked teams.
• Ranked opponents are defined as those teams

As you can see, margin of victory is not a criterion.  The loss to Huntingdon knocked LC out of the playoffs.

Could be wrong but I don't think any team that doesn't earn automatic bid has got in the playoffs with 3 loses, no matter how close of loses they are.

And as far as Salisbury, they only lost to Wesley by 3 and another playoff team by 4. LC lost to UMHB by 4 and then to two other non playoff teams by larger margins.

Here is what written and said about the playoff selections last November.

Also Salisbury gains access to the playoffs thru Pool B.

Especially read Keith McMillan's blog from November 14th.

As for the teams with multiple losses, consider this tourney like you do March Madness.

Some teams are from conferences like the Mid Eastern AC or the Southland Conference or one of the other conferences that get their winner into March Madness as a #15 seed only to lose by 40 in the first round.

Occasionally, there is an upset that messes up the bracket!

Because no three-loss team gets an at-large bid when no two-loss teams get any, year after year.

I am not a huge fan of the BCS. It needs to be modified somehow. However, I am just wondering -- has anyone thought that all this debate/discussion/wondering about D3 playoff selection indicates that even if BCS were to be changed to a playoff format, someone is going to think their team was short-changed? Second-guessing will still happen.  ???
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

Ralph Turner

The beauty of the D3 championship format is that every one of the 239 teams knows what it has to do to earn a Playoff bid.  There are only 6 independent teams (plus 4 more UAA schools) this season.

Over the last 10-12 years, we have seen 6 new conferences form, all for the sake of simplifying the run to the championship.

We can almost promise that the ASC Champion will have anywhere from 1-3 home playoff games, in most seasons.

I have thought that for a long time, I always tell my D1 friends that every argument that have for a playoff I can shot down using things I see in our playoffs. The truth that no ones to admit is there is no system that will make very one happy.

Yes but the BCS is becoming a closed society!!!! If you are not from one of the frat brother conferences you have little chance of ever getting the championship shot undefeated or not!!

You could say the same thing being a team from Texas or the West Coast in D3 though. Even when they let 2 of us in we play each other in the 1st round.

Thanks Ralph for the welcome and for the info.  Makes sense that only one bid per conference but was just wondering about the at large parts.  As to the criteria that puts emphasis upon the head to head in region games, I take it that HSU traveling to Oregon this coming Saturday and say they travel well, will not count as much even though they play a team that is traditionally a power on the west coast?  Sorry I took so long to get back.  Sundays are busy for me.  Look forward to insights and discussions and maybe some friendly bragging and challenges along the way.
