27 20 UMHB Final. They better get better quick or it's going to be a long day for them next weekend.

With this offense UMHB is going to have a hard time.

Not sure I totally agree. I think like with anything, it's a new look and the first game in. UW-Lacrosse has played a game, so they had that going for them. The D was much better in the second half for the Cru. Salinas and Wilson ran well out of the pistol and Bailey only had one INT, I believe, went back and looked, he had 3. But the other was by the backup on his second throw. He was missing on his throws, but got it when it counted.  Plus, I doubt they showed everything. Losing a line like we had last year on offense and defense, things are going to look a little rough the first time out. The D line was getting pushed around early but came back and made some big stops. They made a big stop on 4th and goal at one point that would pay off later in the game as the team held on some timely downs. The big issue was penalties. Not sure exactly how you fix that, but I'm sure it will be discussed this week!

Bailey throws a pick, then UWLC quickly strikes with a TD. This CRU team doesn't look real impressive so far and if the defense doesn't improve McM and HSU are going to throw on them all day. The deep post is killing them...

That pick got batted around like 3 times before the guy caught it off of his shoelaces. The receiver got a hand on it but didn't make the catch. He did have some tight coverage on him, but still, it was a ball that could have been caught.

UMHB secondary has given up a lot of big plays

I have said for years that their 3rd down and long, not in a running position, defense has always given up big plays. But, they always seem to make the stop when they need to. That was the case tonight.

If I figured it correctly, they only gave up 122 yds of offense in the second half, whereas in the first, they gave up 207, so the D really stepped it up and made some adjustments. Hopefully, that will continue into next week.

Lacrosse only scored once in the second half. So that definitley shows that UMHB stepped up.

Did I read that attendance correctly from McMurry/URSA - 31,634?  How does that stand as far as largest crowds involving a D3 school?

UTSA had 55K+ last week for their opener against some D2 team (all time record for a first game by a D1 team) so 30+K for McM wouldn't surprise me.

McMurry's win was the first time in history a D3 beat a D1 in football.

Not true. Not only do D-III's beat D-I's several times a year, it's also not the first time a D-III has beaten a D-I scholarship team.

UMHB has had their most success pounding the ball between the tackles, running the option and play action passes.  Do you really believe Bailey is best as a spread QB?  He hasn't shown me that over the past 2 years.  Good at the option and play action passes.  I'm just being a fan, but the spread offense concerns me.  For the past 9 or 10 years what has UMHB been known for doing best.  I'm not sure why a change in philosophy was necessary.

When asked about that in the post game Coach Fred said it had to do with taking advantage of their experience at WR. I will say the first half concerned me some, but it was like every other first game I've seen from the Cru, shaky at the start. It was strange seeing big runs up the gut of the UMHB D early, but they fixed that in the second half. Roocru said there were Oline position changes this past week which probably accounts for some of that. I'm a bit concerned about the deep pass, especially next week, but if the D can get after Mullins that may not be as scary. Offensively, The pistol was strange to behold. Not used to seeing that in Cru purple, white and gold, but it yielded 511 yds. Bailey was 22-30 for 281 with 3 picks. 1 of the picks was just a great defensive play that could have gone either way and the defender just took it from the WR. 1 was a poor throw and one was on the 70 yard hail mary pass at the end of the first half that the WRs took themselves out of. If they had followed through they had a shot because that ball was on the money. (BTW it was a beautifully thrown spiral from around the Cru 30 and was picked off at the 1...Bailey has a gun). The speed option looked good and accounted for much more that the 220 yds shown. Penalties caused some very big runs to be brought back, and that is a concern. Hopefully that will be fixed this week. The Cru cannot afford to play undisciplined like that next week.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

For those of you in the Dallas area, my ATT U-Verse has a channel 753 735, STO.  It covers Ohio sports.  Yesterday they had the Mt Union game on.  It wasn't live, but was not too far behind the live version.  D3 Fans may want to keep an eye out for it.
