McMurry's win was the first time in history a D3 beat a D1 in football.

Not true. Not only do D-III's beat D-I's several times a year, it's also not the first time a D-III has beaten a D-I scholarship team.

This from the McM game writeup:

QuoteThe War Hawks' win over UT-San Antonio marks the first time an NCAA Division III school has defeated an NCAA Division I scholarship program since Rowan did against Albany in 2000.

We've done some more research and shared it -- I rediscovered that UW-La Crosse beat South Dakota State in 2006.

Nice work Pat. We can always count on you!

Nice win McM. I personally hope that BHMU plays like that next week and MCM can capitalize. I'm tiring a bit of the "BHMU starts out slow every year" theory. Good look McM for one week only i'll be a very big War Hawk fan.

Go Cowboys!

Sorry for the confusion on our part yesterday; actually I personally did not tweet that it was the first time that this had happened. Also if you watched our coverage, you may have noticed that Coach Mumme said it in the postgame as well. Pat helped us look up the above number, and also provided information that might interest ASC fans, and that is that Howard Payne beat Prairie View A&M in 1998 - so McMurry becomes the second ASC team to pull off the feat and the first D3 school in five seasons.

Either way, we're all still beaming. I'd like to go on record as saying that I am moving all further McMurry games home and road to the Alamodome  ;)

With this offense UMHB is going to have a hard time.

Not sure I totally agree. I think like with anything, it's a new look and the first game in. UW-Lacrosse has played a game, so they had that going for them. The D was much better in the second half for the Cru. Salinas and Wilson ran well out of the pistol and Bailey only had one INT, I believe, went back and looked, he had 3. But the other was by the backup on his second throw. He was missing on his throws, but got it when it counted.  Plus, I doubt they showed everything. Losing a line like we had last year on offense and defense, things are going to look a little rough the first time out. The D line was getting pushed around early but came back and made some big stops. They made a big stop on 4th and goal at one point that would pay off later in the game as the team held on some timely downs. The big issue was penalties. Not sure exactly how you fix that, but I'm sure it will be discussed this week!

UMHB has had their most success pounding the ball between the tackles, running the option and play action passes.  Do you really believe Bailey is best as a spread QB?  He hasn't shown me that over the past 2 years.  Good at the option and play action passes.  I'm just being a fan, but the spread offense concerns me.  For the past 9 or 10 years what has UMHB been known for doing best.  I'm not sure why a change in philosophy was necessary.

I do agree that UMHB has had most of their success pounding the ball, but that was when we had a more physical style of backfield. This option opens up the possibilities for Wilson, who is a nice back, but doesn't have the same style as QD. I think this provides the same options up the middle, as Salinas pounded it up the middle a few times, but it also allows for the option and quick audible passes to the outside. LD has the skills, he just needs to be confident, which is coming.

I hope we can play like that too cowboyfan, and by play like that I mean win the game and set records while doing it. While it was a close game UMHB left the field with 3 things, a victory, things to work on, and a passing game.

To expand on all three, this game looked very similar to the game last year in La Crosse which was very close but at the end of the day you only need to win by one. La Crosse came out just like last year and looked ready to play and the Cru didn't for the first half, then our coaches and players had time to correct things and came out and won.

Now I am not dumb enough to think that the Cru looked great out there, they didn't since they had 4 interceptions, 12 penalties and the power running game didn't look good at times.  None of these are highlight film material but I will add that the Cru gained 511 yards, our punt return game looked awesome and the Cru D held La Crosse to 4 of 14 on 3rd down and 0 for 1 on 4th down.

Last but certainly not least UMHB left the game with a passing game the likes of which it has not seen in a long time. LiDarral Bailey threw for 281 yards, which is the 3rd best game total in school history and set a record for the most completions in a game. Also Bailey broke the career UMHB rushing record for QB's as a junior during the game.

So with all that said the UMHB coaching staff will have lots of things to yell about this week but if we can improve as much as most teams do in their second game I like our chances against anyone.

And a  little further back, in 1996, HSU beat Prairie View A&M 42-14.

Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

What date does Hardin-Simmons qualify as being Division III, however?

One more clarification - the listed games are D3 wins over SCHOLARSHIP D1 FCS schools - apparently there are several FCS teams that don't have scholarships, and D3's have had some success against them; even this season.

Yep, and we're trying to get ESPN to let us upload an archived copy of the entire game so our subscribers can view.

The ASC was formed in 1996 from the ashes of the TIAA and HSU was a charter member.  From what I remember the TIAA was a Division III conference* so expect the ASC was from day 1.

* - "At the time of its formation, the member schools of the TIAA maintained their individual institutional affiliations with national intercollegiate athletic organizations such as the NCAA and NAIA before the conference solely became affiliated with NCAA Division III in 1996 (ASC)."  source
