According to the Temple Telegram yesterday, Fredenburg said, "We learned a lot about our football team and we learned a lot about McMurry's team, too, showing a little bit of class there at the end." Mumme said he pulled his guys off the field at the end to "spare a fight." Said they were upset about the onside kick and the TD they said "were taken from us." Said a lot of stuff didn't go their way.

Well, I can attest to that as we had SEVERAL holding calls against McMurry that weren't called. It goes both ways. Give credit to where credit is due. Don't make excuses. They had plenty of chances, as did we.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

That says a lot about their team if they thought they had to "spare a fight."  It was still poor sportsmanship and reflects poorly on the team and the institution.  Both teams had things go against them, that is no excuse.

Bill,

One "poor act of sportsmanship" does not necessarily reflect poorly on the institution.  I have witnessed several "acts" over the last several years , including UMHB students cussing out my son who was 8 at the time, however I don't think poorly of their university.  Could this have been handled better? Probably so, but the coaches reacted the way they thought they needed to at the time. However let's not start talking about the character of people you don't know or of the university as a whole.

This board at times seems to overreact just a little from time to time.  Let's all take a deep breath.

I live in Abilene about 2 blocks from McMs campus, and I work in restaurant where I serve tons of McM students every week (our food is cheap and good perfect for college kids) so I know the caliber of individuals that go to McM. Not everyone does however and walking off the field like that, whatever the reason, does reflect on the school if that is the only thing someone sees of the university. I know people who think poorly of UMHB because of just this sort of thing. They had a negative experience with students and their opinion of the university came to match their opinion of the kids. I understand that things were emotional and chippy, but it's just a game. The players are all grown and need to act like grown ups, and that goes for both sides. The coaches should have calmed things down and proceeded accordingly. If that wasn't possible, the coaches probably did the right thing because a brawl would have been a bigger blight in the university than just walking off.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Couldn't agree more.  There is a line from Remember the Titans that says, "attitude reflects Leadership" .  I know from my observations of some of the leadership that I have seen in the last two years under Coach Mumme, that attitude does reflect leadership.  Having said that, I also have a kid from our town and church who attends McM and runs track.  Not a better kid in the world.  All students athletes and coaches need to remember that it is individual actions that do reflect upon their institution and their team.  Be frustrated.  Sure.  No team gets all the calls their way and every team and point out at least one or two plays that should have gone their way, but how you handle adversity is what makes you the person you are supposed to be.  Anyone can be a good sport when times are good.  I think the coaches should have handled the situation differently and either the unwillingness or the inablity to do so says more to me than the words spoken after.  After all, actions speak louder than words.

Listening to the Hal Mumme show and Mumme just said that he thought the lightening break helped them. Actually said they were playing so bad nothing could have hurt them. Said that he thought the DC made some very good adjustments during the break.

Is there anywhere to listen to that show now?

I wish to clarify the point on the webstreaming from the UMHB-McM game.

McMurry sells their webstreaming for the year.  $70 for about 90-100 games... 10 (well 9 because of the Longhorn network prohibition) football games, 20+ men's and 20+ women's basketball games and about 20 baseball games.  There are also about 10 VB, roughly 5 men's and 5 women's soccer games for the 2011-12 season.  For the McMurry fan, that is a good deal.  Roughly the cost of a tank of gas and food to attend one game.

The quality of the McMurry streaming was excellent.  Because the Belton ISD "hard-wired" internet was down, both UMHB and McM had to use cell phone cards.  That will be the case in Brownwood in 2 weeks for McM, because Gordon Wood Stadium does not have "hard-wired" internet.

I think that the problem with UMHB's stream was due to the cell phone cards that gave access for the upload. That is always hit-or-miss.

We have some good SID's in the conference, but I want to thank McM SID Kyle Robarts who has done a great job getting our games on the internet.  (And yes, the subscription charge has made money for the McMurry athletic department.)

Speaking of SID's; prayers for UMHB's SID, Jon Wallin. Jon had a stroke four months ago; he was back at work, and in fact I spoke with him at the game Saturday. However, he had some complications this week and suffered some seizures, which has put him back in the hospital. Please lift he, his family and the UMHB athletic department up in prayer if you can.

His wife also writes a blog about his condition if you want to follow:

For all the big games in the ASC this weekend, it sure is quiet on this board.  ;)

This board always gets quiet in the days before a big game, and we have 3 of them this week!

I am nervous!!!  It is time for the CRU to eliminate the penalties and turnovers and play smart on the offense!
Should be a beautiful fall day for the annual UMHB-HSU game!

I guess there are too many questions marks for every team for anyone to talk big. Should be a great weekend though since the ASC got 2 out of the 3 games of the week in the Triple Take.

Can't wait to be in Abilene, GO CRU!

Tragically, Harold's BBQ is no longer open, so I can not make the offer to meet people there, but if anyone would like to meet prior to the game, shoot me a message and we can figure something out.

Sad news! I had a great time in Abilene two years ago this weekend. Two bad that the two games aren't staggered day/night like they were in '09.

Good luck to all the TEAMS...play well, stay healthy!
