Why are people complaining about running the score up.  If certain teams don't like it, then don't sign up for football.  :'(  As a player I wanted to score as many points as possible.  As a coach, we keep our starters in until at least 1 drive in the 4th because we are preparing for the playoffs.  We learned our lesson last year when we would bench our starters at the end of the 3rd quarter.  We got into a battle and overtime in the playoffs and our starters were worn out.  This is football.  If you can't stop people from scoring then your coaches need to figure something out or do some better recruiting.  As far as the HSU Cowboys and the McMurry mens football team rivalry, you have to at least win 1 to make it a rivalry.  Should be interesting this year.  ;D
Most pertinent comment yet!  :)

I understand these comments. I understand playing hard and wanting your guys to be ready for the playoffs. Believe me. I've seen this with UMHB quite a bit: starters coming out early and being gassed in the playoffs due to not playing full games. But, I was always taught to respect the game and respect my opponent. In my mind, running the starters out when you are up 30, 40 points is not respect. There's no need to rub it in. But when you have backups playing against another teams #1, 2, or 3 string and they continue to have success and score points, that is fine.

Anyways, I hope everyone has a great weekend, stays healthy, and plays hard ASC football.

Go Cru!
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Only one thought. There are a lot of good points on both sides. Playoffs for points, backups scoring, manner of how scoring is done at the end of games; it all comes down to one's perspective.

This may not mean much to you UMHB2001, but if I were to defend McMurry (which I'm not officially ;) ) I would say this. UMHB has made its name running the ball; they can control a game with such strategy at the end. McMurry is built on the pass - passing 50 to 60 times a game, that is how McMurry controls a game; running the ball means chewing the clock right? Not scoring quickly, burning clock, and if the poor team on the other side can't stop you, you score, but it was with dignity, correct? I agree.

Notice the play clock when McMurry passes at the end, if you notice that we are snapping the ball with 15-20 seconds on that clock, my argument is null and void, but I believe you will find that we don't.

Now, as far as whether we should run at the end, to win with class, or whatever you think. There are 221 teams in NCAA Division III; McMurry ranks #221 in rushing offense. If we spent an entire quarter, whether the game was out of reach or not running every down, we may not be able to keep the ball out of the other teams' hands.

Just a thought ...

On another note, I am taking a position within the university at McMury and will no longer be SID as of Nov. 3 - I will finish out the year as McMurry's primary contact for football, and hopefully that extends beyond Nov. 12 :)

To all on this board, and D3; I've enjoyed my time as a part of McMurry athletics; I've seen the highs and lows of the football team, and am hoping that point spreads will help us get through if we can run the table.

As for Saturday, as a stat nerd, I like to judge my predictions based upon point spreads of common opponents; early in the year I would have expected a pretty one-sided game in our favor, but HSU has a transfer from my alma mater in Zack Stewart and they have the ball rolling. I am hoping for an exciting game, and can't wait for it.

I'll change my username soon, and chime in from time to time.

Good luck all

Ralph Turner

Thanks to mcm_sid, for all that he has done during his time as SID.

He has strengthened the media/internet platform.

He brought video streaming to McMurry. The social media links have reached new groups of fans.

He has done a great job.  Best wishes in the new endeavor.

We are in good hands with Thomas Beckham.

I echo what Ralph said.  Great job mcm_sid!

Kelly Boggs:

Perhaps you should consider that "running-up-the-score" discussions aren't necessarily "silly." Why? Simply because there are coaches, not only in football, who see nothing wrong with doing so. Whether they coach in the ASC is a different issue.

Because I want my kid to grow up knowing that being a bully is wrong? Just because you are bigger and stronger doesn't mean you need to rub the other kids' nose in it. Not at any level. I've also found that the vast majority of people that grow up to be bullies whine the loudest when a bigger kid finally comes by and breaks their nose...

D3 is about sportsmanship. Don't believe it? Check out the banner at the bottom of this link that lists the 6 attributes of Division III:

There's nothing respectful about running up a score and encouraging bullying doesn't develop "responsible leaders and citizens". While I agree there is a difference between a game out of hand and running up the score (see my comments on the Centennial board regarding JHU's most recent win), running up the score should ALWAYS be considered wrong by those who believe in sportsmanship.

Thanks to Kyle, I am watching the McMurry HSU Volleyball game videostream from Kimbrell Arena.

McMurry won the first 25-15, lost the second 28-30.  They are in game #3.

HSU 25-18 in game #3.

Game #4, McMurry 25-17.

Game #5, McMurry 15-13!

Got to agree.   And everything he has posted here has always been worth reading, whether you agreed with it or not.  Best of luck in your new position, mcm_sid!

Well, it appears that the HSU/McMurry rivalry has swung to a new low!!!  It appears that our friends at McMurry are desperate to go out of DIII with a win against their cross town rivals.  They have apparently banned the World Famous Cowboy Band from performing at the football game this weekend.  Digging up some little used NCAA rule that an opposing team's band cannot perform.

See the article from the Reporter-News.....
http://www.reporternews.com/news/2011/oct/27/jaklewicz-banning-hsu-band-will-leave-mcmurry/

WOW!!!  As a former member of the Cowboy Band, I fondly remember some the the antics that would occur during HSU/McMurry game week.  Disappointing that a school would resort to this, especially since this will probably be the last time that they play!!!  Way to go McMurry!!!

I just read that Southwestern is adding football, which might help with non-conference scheduling.  Any chance that Concordia might decide to add football?

BTW60, keep your political views out of a football discussion. They're irrelevant to the topic.

For what it's worth, Concordia's plan for the new campus showed [shows?] what looked to be a playing field and running track plus stands.

The McMurry public relations office has sent out the following statement about the band situation at the McM-HSU football game tomorrow:

A decision was made prior to this season to discontinue allowing visiting bands from competitive colleges at home football games.  The decision was based on conflicts that have resulted in recent years when visiting bands have failed to comply with pre-game, in game and half-time performance protocols and ticketing and seating provisions. The request this week from Hardin-Simmons is the first since the policy was implemented. In appreciation for our longstanding cross-town competitive tradition, an attempt was made to accommodate the HSU band but the schools were unable to make it happen.

Really? It is a problem to have the opposing band perform and have seating.  ;D
