D3reports

I respectfully differ with the opinion that Mullin did not show any effects of the torn meniscus and lateral collateral ligament.

His knee was in a brace. His scrambling was severely hampered.  He gingerly arose from the ground after each tackle or a slide.  He did not punt from the short punt formation which we posters have discussed is a real weapon in Coach Mumme's offense with a healthy Jake Mullin, and which was probably the play about which most posters have commented.

His three INT's were in the 4th quarter, in the last 6 minutes of the game, during "Hail Mary" time.  (In fact, there were no turnovers until the 4th quarter by either team.)

As someone who was at the game and a UMHB fan, I would say that when he threw the ball, he looked really good. He threw three TD's and over 200 yds I belive, so from that point, there were no ill effects. I believe you, or someone else posted to me that the two QB's have about the same punt average, so, the weapon was still there, and obviously the guy could throw cause he played the entire game last week.

As a spectator, it's not that obvious that Mullin was hurting. He played a great game, and as you say, threw the INT's late when they were trying to get down the field and score. Mullin was hit several times and didn't show that he was sore after any of those hits.

That's what I take from the D3 report.

Agree or disagree?
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

IMHO, Mullin had no problems passing because of the injury, but his mobility was definitely handicapped from the previous game with UMHB.
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

I think the podcast was spot on about the respect that Welsey and UMHB have for each other; both fans and teams.  The running game will determine the fate of both teams without a doubt IMHO.  It will come down to how the defenses deal it the other team's ability to move the ball on the ground.  This could end up being a  low scoring game if the defenses are on the ball.    Will Wesley come with their "A" game after the high of the second half against Linfield?  I am really excited to find out!  Looking forward to heading to Belton, Texas.  Hopefully, I will be able to meet some of the Crusader faithful while I am there setting things up!

Thanks for the comment roocru.

I thought that Mullin, a right handed passer, had enough stability in the left leg that it did not affect his passing.

Thanks to Kelly Boggs for the comments about the 2 successful attempts of going for 4th down deep in McMurry territory that were successfully executed in the Louisiana College game.

If I may use a baseball analogy, the use of a closer may shorten a game to 8 or 7 innings.  I thought that the horrific wind in Belton was the "closer" for the Cru in the 4th quarter. Altho' the fake punt took place at the 10 minute mark, "going into the wind" really shut down the game at the end.  Ten minutes was not too soon on that day to go for it.

wesleydad

hey guys figured I would come on in and get the party started for this weekends annual tilt between wesley and UMHB.  Last year Wesley controlled the game and won 19 - 9.  How has UMHB improved on offense to change that result.  Wesley is not as good in the secondary as they were last year, gave up 400+ last week.  Will UMHB be able to take advantage of that?  Wesley brings a different offense to the game with McSweeney at QB.  Both the run and pass have to be respected.  I know that UMHB has played some pretty good running QB's this year so I am sure they will have a plan for him.  At the beginning of the season I thought this was about as far as Wesley would go, but after watching the team handle the mess against Hobart and the second half against Linfield I am not sure.  You know sometimes things just start to fall into place for teams and they get further than expected based on talent, this may be one of them.  Looking forward to talking with you guys this week.  Roocru, amazingly we are only 2+ weeks away from breaking bread again at the stagg.  Would be nice if we could cheer for one of our teams this time.

LiDarrell Bailey is playing better this season.

He is much more mature in the role of QB.  He uses his talent much better, and makes fewer mistakes.

Ron Boerger

The SA Express News keeps talking about Hal Mumme as a possibility to move to Incarnate Word, but I can't see him having ANY interest unless they make a move to D1:

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/the-local-scene/2011/11/mumme-could-be-wild-card-in-uiw-coaching-search/

UIW recently polled their students to see what the interest level would be in such a move.  The majority supported it, but did not support the $100/semester increase in student fees required.

UIW's president, besides pushing to school to go D1, has already more than quadrupled enrollment during his tenure to over 8000.  He'd like it to have 16,000+ by 2020.

Bill McCabe

I would be stunned if UIW hired Mumme.

Ralph, I agree with you, but only since they went back to the I.  He has been tremendous the last 7 games.

I suspect the nuns who founded Incarnate Word as an all-girl high school and a women's college would be astonished, if not shocked and horrified, to see what has happened to the place in recent years.

Wesley Dad, some of us felt the same way early in this season about the CRU.  They played really tentatively early in the season with the Pistol Offense, but have really upgraded the offensive production with the change back to primarily the I formation with a little Pistol thrown in.  At the same time the Defense has steadily improved during the year to be much stronger.

Coach Fredenburg is quoted in the Sunday Abilene Reporter-News as follows about the Saturday game with McMurry:

"I think the thing that has really bothered me just personally from the last two times we've played them, it's been reported that they outplayed us," he said. "They wanted to prove they were better than us.
"That's never been the case, nor have we ever voiced that concern or that thought. And to really substantiate where we are as a football team and as a program today, it was a sweet win."

http://www.reporternews.com/news/2011/nov/26/mary-hardin-baylor-ends-mcmurrys-run-in-d-iii/

Since it's being argued that McMurry was beaten by the wind as much as by UMHB a week ago, to really substantiate how good you are, and how good the ASC is, you guys need to beat Wesley on Saturday!  Go for it!

Then I give credit to the coaching staff that recognized that the "I" was the formation that matched the talent best.

I want this UMHB Cru to win it all.  They will see maybe the best QB of the year with McSweeney...like a healthy Mullin who can run.
