It seems to me that UMHB is not trying to compete with the rest of the ASC, as they are trying to compete with the Mount Unions and UW Whitewaters.  It seems to me they are trying to be an elite program in D3.

It certainly seems that the institution seriously desires to be nationally known for its football success, and winning the ASC championship, however necessary, has thus far proven to be but a minor inconvenience to that end.

This is true but it is only part of the whole package. When Dr. O'Rear took over as President a few years back he finished a process that I believe Dr. Bawcom had started that set a new vision for the university. We desire the university of choice for Christian higher education in the Southwest, which means across the board we want to be know as outstanding. In terms of athletics this has been seen clearly with the new facilities but a greater percentage of our new buildings are academic including a $25 million nursing complex. With numerous years of record breaking enrollment and many other highlights, we are on the right track but we haven't corned the market on success and other schools could do the same things we have done with the right choices.

I don't even think its really a new desire. UMHB was one of the top women's schools in the country prior to going coed. I think UMHB has always desired to provide the best possible ____ (FIB), but thanks to the work of Dr Bawcom, and now Dr O'Rear, the school is in a better position to meet those goals.
A friend of mine from HSU said that UMHB got a new stadium but HSU is getting a new campus. I quickly corrected her pointing out that UMHB has just built a new nursing facility that is state of the art, a new Art building, and a new Student Union that is attached to the stadium. Since I first stepped foot on campus in the late 80s they've built a new college of christian studies building, a new business building, the Mayborn center (gym and basketball arena) tons of new housing, wings on the old SUB and science hall, and a new sports complex for soccer, baseball, softball and tennis to go along with the more recent additions just mentioned. I don't think UMHB is engaging in an arms race with the ASC I think UMHB is focused on providing a top notch college experience for the students while being the best that it can possibly be, and I'm proud of my Alma mater for that.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Let me add my ditto to what Toby and crufootball said. Well stated, gentlemen.

Well said! +k

This is also in addition to the new performing arts building to be built very soon. Anyone who looks only at football can't see the forest for the trees. The lights are bright over Crusader Stadium, but don't let them blind you to what is really going on. Our university looks to improve all areas, not just athletics.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Correct info, Toby (as usual). Here is a brief report on the ESPN web site: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9826901/indianapolis-colts-jerrell-freeman-concussion

Hope Mr. Freeman can recover quickly and continue his solid season.
