Well, from what I saw and read, the young CB's played well tonight, and that was the difference in the game. Good to see we can still own the 3rd quarter too!

I too agree with all that has been said about the video feed. We've got to figure that out. I watched Wabash, St. John's, and Louisiana College today and none of those had the problems we did. We've got to figure that out.

Def need to get a dominant runner. Zach doesn't need to be that. Perhaps that third string QB T. J. Josey. He was pretty quick. And shifty there at the end of the game.

The Telegram article tomorrow, Tuesday, and the coach's show Tuesday evening should give us some good ideas as to the plan for that. Tweet your questions in to @Crufootball .
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

The Cru had a rocky start, but going into the second half they got their feet back under them and started to play football! The one aspect of the game that needs to be  addressed right away was too many penalties: 13 for 122 yards. I think a lot of those penalties were careless mistakes that can be fixed easily.

UMHB was sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Way too many penalties. The CRU defense stepped it up in the 3rd quarter and put the game away.

A Millsaps fan sitting in front of me, an older gentleman, summed it pretty well. He said to me, "Your boys are good but they did not look like the #2 ranked team in the nation tonight."

Coach Fredenburg and company will have them ready to go for Redlands. I expect we will see much improvement between game one and game two. I look for UMHB will live up to its ranking on Saturday.

I'm always worried about the first game, especially the first half, and even more so when there is as much youth as there is on the team this year. I agree, Kelly, it was sloppy, sloppy, sloppy, but I'm sure next week will be worlds different. I was most surprised by the struggles in the O line. I think that played a big role in the early running troubles. As that gets ironed out I think we'll see the running game pick up (not that 186 yds is bad), and hopefully we'll find the next feature RB we're used to having.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Due to a wedding and the lack of good video feed I didn't get to watch the game but I think we may all be being a little hard on the Cru. They beat a team that is #26 in the nation 43-7, one of their best first game victory margins in years. They held a pre-season All-American running back to 40 yards. They scored on offense, defense, and special teams. They averaged nearly 5 yards a carry without their starting center. They did all of this against a team that has had months to prepare for them and built the game up into  what I am sure was one of the biggest event they have had on campus.

With that said, as Coach Pete has always said, a team makes their best improvement between weeks 1 and 2, so I fully expect the Cru to do better against Redlands, but if this is how we play when we are bad I can't wait to see us play a good game  ;)

dont get me wrong, I'm good with last nights game. It's game 1 and that's what I expect. It takes time to gel into the team we will see come playoff time. I'm sure next week will be night and day different because the young guys have a better understanding of what game day is like and what's expected of them. That said, the sloppiness that bothered me was the penalties. First game jitters for play is one thing 13 penalties is another.

This is why I love college football season, I am finishing my MBA and should be doing homework right now but instead I am getting to talk about UMHB football.  ;D

With that said I did way too research and saw this. Last night was not pretty for the Cru with 13 penalties for 122 yards against UMHB, however its not that far away from our average first game numbers.  Since 2004 only once have we had fewer than 9 penalties in a first game. Another interesting note is the years we have gone to the semi's have been some of our worst first games in terms of those pesky yellow flags.

And speaking of pesky I guess I should get back to my studies for a few hours, hope everyone enjoyed the first weekend of D3 football and hope to see all the Cru faithful at the CRUthedral next weekend.

I'm with everyone, a win is a win. I just believe The CRU's potential is far and away above what I saw Saturday evening. I expect we will see improvement as the season progresses. This team is loaded with talent.

I'm looking forward to bieng present and accounted for at the home opener in the comfy confines of The CRUthedral.

Does anyone know why the HSU - Southwestern game canceled? The last that I saw HSU had a comfortable 28-7 lead in the 3rd.

It was canceled due to weather delays and will not be rescheduled.

Thanks for the link. They played into the 3rd quarter. Since it was non-conference, I guess they decided to "cancel" rather than give a decision.

General information question...

Might that leave an option for HSU to have a "bowl game"?

i was trying to watch the game and they had the live feed of the score board with the. Lock set at 30 minutes counting down to end a lightening delay. I can't tell you how many times the count down restarted.

Wanted to pass this on - Ryan Murphy sadly died along with his sister Kylie in an automobile accident in Burnet County this weekend.   According to the article in the Austin American-Statesman, he was a freshman on the UMHB football squad last year before transferring to Texas Tech.

Given HSU only had 8 DIII games on the schedule already, I'm concerned that this might keep them out of the running for a potential at-large playoff berth--provided of course they can beat either LC or UMHB and run the rest of the table.  6-1 in region/vs. DIII competition isn't a real compelling case when there are so few spots available in Pool C.    :-\

Things like this have happened before--not getting to kick an extra point in OT against ETBU kept them out a few years back...

Sure wish Redlands could have played MHB in their week 1, I agree big advantage and agree with your coach week 1 to week 2, can be night and day...Oh well Redlands looking forward to the trip...Hope the crowd is there, fun experience for the boys. Hopefully our offense can move the ball and keep it close.
