Or he gets to come back home to the important senior events.
He's not playing basketball or doing the field events in track.
He can still come home for the prom.
He is walking the stage with his class in May.
Would it surprise anyone if we found out that he already had 6 or 12 hours of dual credit college work?

If you are going to do those things then stay and enjoy it. It only happens once. Again, it's a kid's (family's?) choice and he's free to make it. If it was my kid? I wouldn't let him rush the things he only gets to do once without a darn good reason. Maybe he misses something, maybe he doesn't. But he won't know unless he does it. Good luck to him and I hope it works out.

You're assuming everyone has a great hs senior year.  Personally, I did not enjoy hs, including senior year.  I went to one reunion (10th?), and remembered that I really didn't like more than two or three people there - never been back again (big push for my 50th this fall - I've been ignoring them).  If I could have gone to college early, I probably would have jumped at the chance (except for my sophomore girlfriend ;D).

This student's reason for going a semester early is probably to start his football career, but it may be just as likely a desire to get out of town.  I don't know, and it is none of my business.

I hope it works for the young man. Not judging him and I hope this proves to be a positive move/decision for him.
I liked the days when d3 was not allowed to have spring practice.

Most D-3 athletes have their own off season programs. I can see his wanting to get into the "off-season" program and getting to use the college weight room.

He is a competitive powerlifter, so the esprit among his future teammates will be a leadership issue for him to cultivate.

I will not be surprised if he is not a captain on the team in his junior and senior years, (and that is why I love D3!)

I did the same thing, Graduated mid year but still had to wait to walk and was beginning to work out with the schools sports program off season until the next fall semester which was basically a club soccer program. I didn't miss a thing, I was on cruise control and so I took a few college courses and began to settle in with my soon to be teammates. This is for some, and probably not for others, as for me, I liked to get things done and if they can get done quicker, then so be it.
I think some are hung up on the social aspect of school and not looking at the fact this young man is serious about his education, and his plans and the social bit means little. good for him if that is his choice, been there done that, and still didn't miss or miss to this day a second semester of HS my senior year.

I know there are no signing ya yah's and such for D3- but, we can have some fun with the verbal agreements to attend our schools. Here's a kicker http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2874716/caleb-chadwell has made a verbal agreement to attend UMHb in 2016

UMHB nabs standout lineman.

First time I've seen a kid leave HS to early enroll at a D3 to get a jump on football.  #WhyD3?

This has definitely happened before, not the first time.

Well he hasn't signed a contract yet but Jerrell Freeman just took a step that probably means he is going to be making a very nice sum next season as he signed with Drew Rosenhaus. No matter what, big time congrats to Jerrell, it is absolutely amazing what he has accomplished and I hope he can get a nice pay day and be on a contender next year.

UT-Tyler is starting a marching band, and offering (partial) scholarships to those interested.

It's a shame the kids won't have the chance to play at their own football games.

Ralph Turner

Actually, I think that it is a brilliant maneuver on the way to bringing football to UT-Tyler.

The students would have to vote an increase in student fees to fund the program and the Title IX equivalent for women.

If you increase the number of students who will "benefit" from a football team, including another 50 to 100 to 150 socially active students ("socially active" which the band members are on the McMurry campus for sure and probably the Cowboy Band at HSU, too), then the administration has off-loaded a major part of the selling the program on a key voting bloc.

Beware UTT getting football. They will dominate!  There is so much talent in east Texas and the cost to attend UTT is so reasonable, that they can build a quality program quickly. Just look at their performances in the other sports that they sponsor. They usually win most of the spring sports, or compete very strongly. They always are among the top schools from the ASC in the Director's Cup.

A nice article in the Temple paper about the rise of football at Texas colleges and the impact UMHB made.

Thanks.  Too bad we cannot get more schools to add football at the D-3 level.

I would like to have another football conference in this part of the country.

UMHB's David Twilleager named CSVA Division III Video Coordinator of the Year for the second year in a row.  Thanks for all the great work you do, bud!
