Unfortunately, I did not make it to the game Saturday night, so for those of you who did make it, what were your thoughts on the young guys?

Any positions or players that stood out to you?

Did the 1st string play at all?

How did the offense look different from previous years?

What was the final score?

September 3rd is coming!
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

GillCJ1

I'd like to know as well.  If I remember right, crufootball said the final score was 38-30 in favor of the good guys.  He can probably give more details than that.

Blake was up on some snaps at the beginning and the end...looked really good and poised, hit some nice deep connections and ran the offense nicely. A good chunk of the middle portion of the game was run by #15 Kyle Jones and some others, I didn't get their numbers they were wearing. (Thanks Kelly) And he was fine, obviously this was not the starting vets as a whole on the line, many did not even dress (Tedrick and Baylor were not dressed that I could see) so this would be a majority incoming players to see show they would handle things, the pace, which was really fast. I think it was Bryce Wilkerson at #12 but I am not certain (numbers may not mean much right now)but if it is he will be something to watch this season, this players punt and kick return, outstanding and fearless, lines up at tight end in some plays and was a force.
There were some rough spots but I imagine those will be addressed with the coming practice times. I think it was 30-38 UMHB. Also there was some real jungle ball stuff being thrown at our guys.

Reading Kickoff... are ya"ll?

Yeah, I'm reading it in-between conference calls at work.  Looks like they have the Cru with 1 loss during the regular season (assuming Linfield) and winning the ASC.  Based on their projections, we would receive the Pool B bid and (most likely) face Hardin-Simmons in the first round again.  Possibly Hendrix out of Arkansas.

That Week 3 match-up against Linfield is gonna be a big one.  A lot of people's Preseason Offensive POTY (Riddle) versus Preseason Defensive POTY (Smith).

A few notes from Belhaven:

Lots of returning starters this year, including at QB. First returning QB for Mumme. Belhaven led the ASC in passing last year (no surprise from a Mumme-coached team) and should be improved this year.

Defense is shoring up inside to stop the run. Belhaven was last in the ASC in rushing defense last year and it was the problem.

Belhaven attempted 56 4th down conversions last year, almost twice the amount of Sul Ross, who was second. Belhaven will be among the leaders in this category again, but the word is that number will be way down. 35 turnover on downs - many of them in their own territory killed them last year.

Belhaven's defense was third in the ASC in takeaways last year. They also led the conference in turnovers. Add that to 35 turnovers on downs and it was disastrous.

The new on-campus stadium is going to be ready for Oct. 1 and East Texas Baptist. Will not be ready for the opener - the rain has been too much. It is going to be incredible, especially compared to where they have played in the past. All chair back seats and one of the largest video boards in Division III. Will only seat about 2000, but thats all that we need.  Here's a local article on the construction: http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/college/2016/08/06/belhaven-football-have-new-home/88341678/

Also, the 200 uniform combinations are still happening but it appears everything is going to Nike.

Great to see Belhaven fans here, welcome... So I'm reading the Deeper Sleepers article and I think they nailed it. And I'm glad they did this so I can adjust my viewing weekend accordingly. If I'm not at a Crufest, then I stream games on my bigscreen back home, starting from East Coast to end up on the west coast.(Yeah I own the living room all day with laptops all over the place. A list like this can help me schedule what i'm going to watch so I really appreciate the work they did on this.

The "Game Score" column is a silly little metric I devised that weights games based on how good the teams are according to my model, and then weights that by the underdog's chances of winning. Pretty interesting which games the model picks.

I don't think the returning quarterback will be the starter, at least not all season. But you'll have to read Kickoff to learn more (and thanks to those who are!).

My two-cents worth on UMHB's performance on Saturday:

The ones only played a couple of series in the 1st quarter and looked good/solid - not great. The twos played the remaining of the first half and looked good on defense and great on offense. QB Kyle Jones (#15) is a freshman from Giddings, TX. He looked outstanding. He was poised and made good decisions. Jones has a strong arm, is accurate and has superb touch.

The 3rd quarter was mainly players who will make up the JV. They played hard but were just physically over matched.

The 4th quarter belonged to the UMHB ones. It was total domination. The CRU scored 3 touchdowns. Blake Jackson looked great as did all of the receivers. The defense was smothering even without Teidrick Smith and Kris Brown (both were nursing injuries - both should be fine).

The CRU offense is going to be wide-open with speed, speed and more speed at the skill positions. I heard some long time observers of The CRU say they have never seen the offense look so good this early. There was lots of buzz in the stands about he potential of the offense. Running back Duane Thompson limped off in the first quarter and did not return. My guess is keeping him out was precautionary. Kyle Jones will be a more than capable back-up. It might be too early to say, but he could well be the future QB for UMHB. If so, the future looks bright.

The UMHB defense was smothering. Very, very tough. When Teidrick is added to the mix along with Kris Brown, wow, The Purple CRUsh will be in full effect. I'm of the opinion that this UMHB team has the potential to be the best ever in a long line of very good football teams. I can't wait for Sept. 3 to get here.

Good to see you again, Blaze.  Thanks for the write-up on the Blazers.  The Cru will be paying a visit on my birthday this year.  Wish I could be there to see the new stadium.

Also, I echo Kelly's sentiment.  Great job as always on Kickoff, fellas.
