I truly look forward to the UMHB v HSU ( As my daughter says Hardin sinners v. U of Money Hungry Baptists) and we'll be there for homecoming and such. I think the season drama has built up nicely for this matchup...should be a nice packed house being that HSU is in a abilene and many can make the trip. Let's pack this house! Get loud and see one great match up! We had a good travel cru last year at the loss....hope to see that rectified this game.
+1!  Money Hungry Baptist!  I love it.

Right up there with Horrid Pain and McMurphy!

Not sure I agree with "Money Hungry". When your goal is to be the University of choice of Christian higher education, and when you have a plan to make facilities great so that students receive the best possible education you do what has to be done. Many of the buildings that have gone up are straight out of money raised. The nursing department was completely paid for prior to it being finished.

Yes the cost has gone up since the late 90's when I attended, but so has everything, and upwards of 90% of students receive financial aid. The school does a great job of helping students, and not just loans. With all of the new facilities come opportunities for student work. It is always easy to make judgements when you see it from the outside and are frustrated with the football team's success, but that is not truly the case.
Ohhh I touched a nerve.

I learned the "pet names" from my father who was the sports editor for the McMurry newspaper and played 2B for the Indians before WW2.  ;-)

From way back when, my father's cousin was a single wing HB for Howard Payne in the 1930's. He and other McMurphy students used to call Howard Payne College Horrid Pain.

Likewise across town McMurphy students called the recently renamed (circa 1934) Hardin-Simmons University "Hardened Sinners".  Hardened Sinners was closer to big time football in the 1930's. They played in the Border Conference with Texas Tech, New Mexico, NMSU, West Texas State Teachers College, Texas Western (UTEP), Arizona State and Arizona. NFL HOF Bulldog Turner (no relation) played for HSU in the late 1930's.

For a quick second Saturday I thought UMHB was human after all, it appears all ETBU did was tick the machine off and the second half was more of what I expected.

As for HSU they finally were in control of a game from beginning to end with no hiccups along the way.  Yes I know it was against a winless team but up to this point we had not been in total control of any game until the second half.   They did what you should do against a winless team.

This Saturday hopefully will be a lot of fun.   I'm hoping that HSU can keep it close for more than a half, and down the stretch anything can happen.    It is going to take a flawless game as well as a few bounces in the cowboy direction to beat the Cru anytime, but especially this year and at their place.   I have nothing but respect for the Cru and look forward to a great game.    Looking forward to seeing the Cruthredral again, got the tour when my kid went on his visit, goes without saying it is the class stadium of D3!!

Any recommendations on good eats while we are in town for the game?

What made your kid decide to go to HSU over UMHB?
A variety of reasons but mainly the connection made with the players and coaching staff, closer to home.....

+k for the awesome history lesson!  I LOVE the "pet names" for each school.  I can't tell you how hard I laughed this morning when I saw "University of Money Hungry Baptists"  ;D

So, how about the other ASC schools?  Here's one -  Significantly Remote State University?

+1!   ROTFL TRUE

How many fans on these boards have ever been to Sul Ross State?

I once had the chance to mix a business meeting with a chance to watch a McMurry-SRSU basketball game in Alpine.

I flew from Dallas to Midland and then rented a car!  Whew! That was a long trip!

ETBU was/is their own worst enemy.  All of their antics did nothing but piss off the CRU and thats why they got smoked in the 2nd half.  UMHB had a lot of chances in the first half but their own mistakes really hurt them.  ETBU came out fired up and made some great plays but it didn't last long.

**From a 100% outsiders perspective**

ETBU has some athletes but I think a lot of their offensive numbers come from playing some teams that are nowhere near as athletic.  UMHB limited the big play and ETBU was never able to throw the ball down the field with any success.  They seem to be a dink-and-dunk team and let their athletes make the big plays.  The ends for UMHB had a field day and I give the ETBU QB a lot of credit for his toughness.

First off, I would like to thank you personally for the noting the QB's toughness as he is my son! He told me the UMHB front 4 were really good and he was absolutely correct as they tore through the ETBU O-line time and time again.  There are some injuries within the line, but that will not be used as an excuse from me as you play who you got!  He told me and I have to agree that this was the most he has EVER been hit in a game.

As far as the dink-and-dunk philosophy, the UMHB defense played pretty much what amounted to a prevent defense the entire game as they KNEW their D-Line could handle up on their business.  That pretty much leaves throwing underneath and hoping for big plays.  Trust me, Dru can sling it!  Just look at some other games!  Personally, a few more QB draws would have helped, but Dru took a beating so not sure if I wanted to see that anyway.

BTW, the big numbers you stated ETBU has put up on some of the teams in the conference can be found when looking at many of the ASC teams when playing the lower half of the conference.

My question is about the "antics"?  Not sure what that means as I believe both teams were jawing before the game and didn't see much more after that besides some tremendous football being played.  Coach Walden likes to get his team fired up before the game and the young men seem to respond to him.  I love the excitement he brings.  They played hard and thanks to 4 TO's from UMHB, we were still in the game at half 14-14.  Unfortunately for ETBU, the Cru train got on track and steam-rolled us in the 2nd half.

UMHB is REALLY GOOD. No question about it!

Obviously, ETBU is not at that level yet, but trust me they will keep working to get to where they need to be by the end of the season!

No real nerve touched, just pointing out the situation as it is.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

I've been there, but not for a game.  I took my family to Big Bend earlier in the year and we took a little time to check out Alpine.  Now that I know just how far away it is, I just don't know if I'll ever make the trip for football.  Perhaps once my kid is older.

So this Saturday UMHB is going to retire the number of Jerrell Freeman. I think he was #50...if so...Will Tedrick become #50.1? Or will he continue to wear that number for the season. (If I have the jersey number correct) If so, I think that is fitting for him to still wear that number out, Two time All American wearing the number to be retired, pretty sweet deal. This season just keeps getting better and better.

Jerrell wore #8 when he played at UMHB. That is the number being retired.

Very cool to have your ETBUnewbie, always nice to have an insiders prospective. Just wanted to echo the compliments to your son and say that on last nights coaches show, Coach Fred was very complimentary of your son as well.

As for the antics comment, I may be wrong but I assume he was talking about the coaching practices that Coach Walden does such as going for it on 4th down and going for 2 half the time. Most Cru fans are used to a fairly conservative game plan so such activities are pretty foreign to us haha.

...and beaten by Kelly while I was typing my reply.  Heh.

HSU1018

HSU grad here, first time posting, but have been following for years.

Headed to the amazing venue that is Crusader Stadium for the game this weekend.  Just wanted to say good luck to both sides, and hoping that HSU will keep it close enough to have a shot at the end of the game.

Loving the "pet names" for the schools!

Thanks HSUDAD.  Living in Huntsville now, so UMHB is the closest it gets, and I couldn't miss the Top 10 matchup.
