TJ was a bit high and hot on some passing, his straight on passing was laser point on, but, there were some dropped passes as well.

Sounds like an athlete playing QB, not an athletic QB.

In TJ's defense he has still only started 3 games ever as a college QB. We won all 3 games and you could make the case that we have already played 2 of the 3 most challenging games we will play in the regular season.

He had not practiced as QB since his freshmen year (2014) at UMHB when he performed well enough in practice and mop up duty to be our 3rd string QB. And while the passing percentage has not been great he does look much better than he did in week 1 and could assume will only get better.

This is not to say I am not intrigued by the potential of Kyle Jones throwing passes to TJ, but as good as Kyle looks throwing the ball he is obviously not as quick as TJ is a running the ball which we all know has been a staple of the UMHB offense.

no doubt. Josey is a very good D3 QB and a heckuva D3 athlete.  I just wonder how those two mesh.  I see a WR with a rocket arm playing QB, imo.

hope it did not come off like I was downing TJ as a QB, point is there were q few passes in the hands of receivers that dropped, TJ delivered so I hope I am not down on our QB line, I was just thinking with the pure skill we witnessed last season I don't think anyone would have issues seeing TJ in the WR role. If he is still in at the QB role, not a problem at all.

No worries from me, every UMHB fan got a little spoiled last year with Blake as our QB and TJ as a WR. I like you am happy with whatever result happens as long as we have more points than the other team at the end of the game.

What is interesting to me is if we take the conversation even further and say what happens if TJ goes back to WR. Right now Isaiah Townes and Jonel Reed look like future stars and of course you don't want to take Bryce and De'Nerian off the field but if you put TJ back in than someone is going to lose playing time.

There is no doubt about it, UMHB is loaded talent wise. While you give up something on the run side of things with Jones at QB, he looked really good Saturday throwing the ball. Looking back, he looked great last year in the preseason game against the team from Mexico, but not so much during the season. However, he did look sharp against TLU. The coaches have some tough decisions to make, but Jones throwing to all the guys just mentioned has all kinds of potential. It will also open up the running game.

I think the Southwestern game will be telling. I look for Jones to get more reps and perhaps see Josey back at WR for some snaps. I think they way performances go on Saturday might indicate what we will see the remainder of the year on the offensive side of the ball. While I think Josey will be fine at QB, he was an absolute beast at WR last year.

Nice problems to have!

As an aside and FYI: This morning Coach Fredenburg and Southwestern Coach Joe Austin were both interviewed on Austin radio station 104.9 - The Horn. Coach Fredenburg said the UMHB defense was playing pretty well right now. Later, Coach Austin said he thought Fredenburg was underselling The CRU defense. Austin said he has coached in D3 for 15 years and, on film, the UMHB defense looks to be the best he's ever seen. Linfield coach Joe Smith said the same thing after playing UMHB this season. There is still a lot of football to play, but I thought I would pass this along as some food for thought.  8-)

I hope to see ya'll in Georgetown.

I still plan on being there for the game tomorrow night.  My kid is sick, though, so it will probably depend on how he's feeling.  Fortunately it's a night game!

On a historical note the UMHB-SU game pits the 2 schools who claim the title of oldest school in Texas. UMHB (& I guess Baylor since they share a charter and history) is the oldest college in continuous operation in the state. SU bases its claim on the charter of one of the universities that joined together to form SU. So we have the 1st Battle for the Republic taking place Saturday night @ 6pm in Georgetown.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

DFWCrufan

If I have my history correct UMHB was 1845 established by the Republic of Texas, I don't think SU was a chartered school until five years after that date. So that (I believe) separates the two. one being charted and now being chartered at a later date.

Southwestern claims a charter date of 1840. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southwestern_University As pointed out in the Wikipedia article, Southwestern was "formed in 1873 from a revival of collegiate charters granted in 1840, Southwestern is the first university in Texas." SU has the oldest charter, this is true, but the school did not really begin to operate until 1873.

Toby has it right. UMHB/Baylor both claim to be the oldest college/s in continuous operation in Texas. UMHB/Baylor was chartered and began operation in 1845, 28 years before SU opened its doors.

So, on Saturday we have "the oldest college in continuous operation in the state" vs "the college with the earliest charter."

FYI: Comedian Bill Engvall (famous for his "Here's your sign" bit) attended SU, I don't know whether or not he graduated; Red McCombs, billionaire businessman, is a Southwestern alum.

UMHB graduates: Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, first female governor of Texas; Buddy Groom, MLB pitcher for 13 years (his last year in the majors was 2005 with the Yankees); Current NFL player Jerrell Freeman who plays for the Chicago Bears; Rebekah Baines Johnson, mother of Lyndon Baines Johnson the 36th president of the United States (Johnson Dorm is named in her honor).

I agree with everything in the post above but I have to throw in a plug for my alma mater as well. :)    Austin College is the oldest college  in Texas that is still operating under its original charter established in 1849.
