Your thoughts on: Will Brockport punt/kickoff to UMHB's #1, Bryce Wilkerson?

I hope!

Brockport came across to me as very cocky on the field.  To me there is a fine line between confidence in one's ability and cockiness and Brockport crossed that line last week against Del Val and it almost cost them the game.  Now if that mentality comes from the coaching staff then they may just believe that they are good enough to shut down any return team despite the success that team has had in previous games.  If I was coaching and I had a punter/kicker good enough to directional kick then your returner would never see the ball.  I don't think I would kickoff out of bounds but a directional low drive type kick that may bounce around before someone other than the normal returner picks it up would be the best option.  If you are going to get beat don't get beat by a kick return.

I agree, the punting for Brockport actually set them up to win. If they can get the same out of the Punter, it can at least keep the special team category at even. I think Brockport will learn from that experience.

My first prediction of the season:

CRU - 49
Brockport - Toast
;D ;D ;D

I hope BP is not going to think Punting is a good offensive tactic. Ok keep it out of Bryces hands.. they still have to deal with the O line, I do not see BP stopping the O, I see the O playing a conservative, safe the ball, grind it downfield and burn time type of game. I had mentioned before, I see BP at the same level as a Chapman, I don't see them as a Linfield a St. Thomas or HSU.
This is very familiar for Coach Pete and a good number of the guys on the field, no need for blowouts, simply keep the ball safe, move it consistent and burn your clock keeping your players healthy for the Bowl, that's it.

Well, per a recent tweet, at least Crusader Stadium is "suitable" for Brockport to play in.  ::)

That was tongue and cheek though right?
We are SO good at this game!

Social media so hard to tell. There was nothing to indicate it was  ;D. Add this to the "never heard of them" quip and you tell me.

In Brian Lester's column this week, I noticed something very important in the character of two star players. http://www.d3football.com/playoffs/2017/umhb-offense-support

Quote

Josey played in the first three games at quarterback before switching back to wide receiver, a position he certainly thrives at as he set a school record with 1,063 receiving yards in 2016.

But it wasn't Robinson's job yet. Kyle Jones started in Weeks 4 and 5. Robinson saw his first action under center in Week 6 against Howard Payne. He's earned five starts this season, helping the Cru reach the doorstep of the national championship game.

Leading receiver Bryce Wilkerson is a senior and, like Josey, he does what he can to help Robinson thrive in his rookie season.

"I let him know what he did right and what he did wrong and have done what I can to help him make progress," Wilkerson said. "I'm always there to offer advice."

With Wilkerson and Josey being veteran players, the value of their presence and the impact they've had on Robinson's growth as a quarterback can't be underestimated.

"Those two have made a lot of plays the last two years and are both mature guys who have really taken our freshman quarterback and have helped him understand the expectations of our program," Cru offensive coordinator Stephen Lee said. "They've helped bring him along and have helped him establish confidence."

Robinson completed 17 of his 25 passes for 159 yards in a 24-10 win over St. Thomas in the national quarterfinal round on Saturday. He didn't throw a touchdown pass and was picked off twice.

Those are the kind of days that can be tough on a young player. Wilkerson understands that.

"I always tell him to keep his head up," Wilkerson said. "I don't let him get down on himself."

Robinson has completed 70 percent of his passes and has thrown for more than 1,200 yards and nine touchdowns.

"He knows how to extend plays when he feels the rush," Josey said. "He rolls out but he isn't looking to run instantly. He's still looking down the field to make a throw."

Robinson's ability to make plays is aided by the fact that he has talented targets to throw to. Wilkerson and Josey rank first and second on the team in receiving, combining for more than 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Josey's experience at quarterback brings an added dimension to his knack for making plays as a receiver.

"I know what defenses want to do and I'll let Carl know where he needs to put the ball depending on what coverage a team is in and based on what the down and distance is," Josey said. "I use my experience of having played quarterback to help him be in a position to make plays."

Having the the knack, the skill, the wisdom, the insight and any other characteristic that you want to use to describe the ability to mentor a player/pupil/"junior" team member is very valuable as one goes through life. I am happy that the coaching staff has inculcated that attribute into these star players (Wilkerson and Josey).

This wasn't always the case. After losses to Whitewater, Mount, and Linfield, the coaching staff really took a hard look at the character and leadership of the team. They brought their leaders together and as a group decided who would need to stay with that character and who needed to go. They are seeing the residual effects of those discussions.

I wonder if a "lowly" high school stadium, Temple High's Wildcat Stadium, was "suitable" for Brockport to practice in on Thursday?  ;D
