Actually I could see it, here is why. History with Coach Fred shows that the Coach seems to like have a stable of QBs. The Zach Anderson/ Blake Jackson competition seemed to develop a very good Jackson and I do believe we would have seen more Jackson during that season had he not been injured. While you would think Luke may seem to have an inside line, and possibly so, I believe the idea of "staying on top of the hill" will help drive players from complacency.
On the other hand, too many chefs can spoil the broth comes to mind so it can be a difficult line to run and personally I like the idea of my main guy at the helm. But I don't make that decision, I don't make the big dollars to do that.

Understood.  But if you're a player of Luke Poorman's quality and you've got two years of football left to play, why would you leave Mount Union just to not play somewhere else?  If I've chosen to be a college free agent because I have two years of football left and I want to spend them on the field, the question of whether or not I'm actually going to play has be answered in the affirmative.  Otherwise, walking away from a national champion doesn't make any sense.

I do get that they'll all say the right things about competition and nobody is guaranteed anything and you have to earn it every day and on and on with these coachspeak platitudes.  But he's going to be the QB there.  Nothing else really makes sense.

I disagree with this. UMHB has no upside to guaranteeing him the job. Telling him he's likely going to be the starting qb when recruiting him? Absolutely. But if he is outplayed in camp, I don't think UMHB is going to care what they told him. They will play the best qb. What is the downside? He complains about a recruiting compromise? Who cares. This isn't D1 where teams live and die sometimes by those grad transfers and recruits and can't afford to get a bad rep. This is DIII, where teams live and die by recruiting the best kids and keeping them in the program. So if they promise, and play a less talented qb because of that promise, the downside is UMHB isn't the best possible team and could miss out on that next championship or lose that more talented qb that is sitting behind someone he shouldn't be.

Now, do I think it's likely Poorman gets outplayed? No. Possible, but not likely. But the risk of a DIII transfer like this is 100% on the athlete, not the school. So there is no reason to believe he is a lock just because he chose UMHB. I'd be shocked if he isn't the starting qb week 1 though.

Given the situation (we have no returning varsity QB) I would agree that it would be surprising if Luke is not under center although I wouldn't be shocked if multiple QBs were used. Blake Jackson is one example but another one is Damian Davis, a WR transfer from Oklahoma State. Damian's situation was very different but he was a legit D1 wide receiver who shared the field with Dez Bryant and then I believe ran into some discipline problems. Clearly he was our best WR but he didn't touch the field his first game and I believe only started seeing real action by the 3rd game of the year.

Maybe I should rephrase.  I think it's his job to lose.  If he's out of shape and complacent and generally just terrible, then obviously he won't play.  But I don't think there's any logic behind him transferring to a school that believes they have better quarterbacks already on the roster.  He actively left exactly that situation.  He's on that team specifically because both he and the team expect that he will start.

Here is a post 39min ago about the Quarterback competition and today's full pad workout

"Working out in full pads also gave the coaching staff a better opportunity to evaluate the quarterback competition. With the top three players at that position from last year's final depth chart gone from the program, the Cru is looking for someone to step up and win the job. Returners Will Chaney and Michael Dearman are competing with a pair of transfers, Luke Poorman (Mount Union) and Jace Hammack (Abilene Christian) for the starting spot. All four players took snaps with the #1 offense on Thursday and they all showed promise at times.

"I think they've grown a lot since that first day of practice because that was a little bit rocky," Cru senior wide receiver T.J. Josey said. "I have seen a lot of improvement and there are good players there. It also makes it more fun for me because that has allowed me to concentrate on playing receiver because we have some players there who can lead this team."

The team will practice Saturday morning and Sunday evening before returning to its normal practice schedule next week with the start of classes on Monday, August 20th. The returners will scrimmage a team from Mexico at Crusader Stadium on Friday, August 24th, at 6:00 PM at Crusader Stadium. That will be the team's only chance to face outside competition before kicking off the 2018 season at home at Albright College on September 8th."

DFW....I still maintain this was the UMHB downfall at LINFIELD in 2009. Platooning qbs created no momentum for the CRU.

So Jace Hammack seems like an interesting story.  For one, there is a Becky Hammack at ACU who is Dean of the School of Nursing.  Don't know for sure there's a relationship but it's an uncommon name.

2012-14 threw 76 TDs for Andrews HS, where he also played infield for the baseball team.
2015 - played in two games at McMurry, 1-4-1 passing for 15 yards and 11 yards on 6 attempts.
2016 - redshirt freshman at ACU
2017 - redshirt sophomore (!) at ACU
2018 - UMHB

I didn't know you could redshirt two seasons in a row.  Since UMHB has him listed as a junior it looks like only one of them counted as a redshirt in terms of his D3 eligibility.

Could that be just a documentation of the fact that he has already used his red shirt season, like he isn't a True Sophomore he is a red shirt sophomore?
