Whoa, Southwestern has moved the ball well on the ground on each of their first 3 drives -- all of which have ended in fumbles. Now 13-0 ETBU in the first quarter.

Another fine performance from UMhb. THey played well in all caveats. Unfortunately, Poorman had a bad showing, attempting a pass and had it picked off. I don't think the receiver was looking for the ball, though, so that doesn't help. Jase Hammack definitely has the starting spot, and Denarian Thomas had some nice touches. Poorman could possibly be in a battle for the 2nd spot.

Offensive line looked good, as did the defense. Some work to do on special teams, though. I liked the emphasis on the run.

Next up, TLU in Seguin. Finally, a game I can travel to.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Congrats on a huge win. Wow! Three players over 100 yards rushing. Now that's impressive. UW-Whitewater used to say, "pound the rock"!. The Cru "shattered" the rock! And you showed the usual stingy defense you have become known for. Best for the rest of the year. ☠🏈

Ground game looks promising which is what Coach Fred wants. Very pleased, Cru are looking solid in the various phases so it is just time to wait to see what happens per game. But I can say this, personally, in a few years, this Cru puts things at ease for me. In the past we have always had a question here or there, This Cru seems decently settled in for a start of a season. Yeah, silly offisdes blowups were rampant but overall very confident Cru. 2018 looks really bright

TLU had a good outing against Belhaven.  The trip had to be tough, so being able to put together a solid game after a long road trip is a good sign.  Obviously a big challenge this week vs. UMHB which will be the Cru's third straight road game.  TLU should provide a better test and will allow UMHB to identify any issues they may need to address moving forward.  Looking forward to this game in what will be a great game day environment.

ETBU looked good for 3 qtrs this game. Improvement on the 2 qtrs last game. That second quarter was rough last night. Almost all of ETBU yards came through the air, with the running game being non-existent. That being said, they consistently moved the ball the whole game and really only had to punt when they shot themselves in the foot with costly penalties or bad snaps. Southwestern has a really different offense than what you normally see in modern college football, like the veer or some variation. The defense had a tough time stopping the run, and if they hadn't turned the ball over 6(!) times this would have been a different game.

ETBU is more talented than every other team in the ASC other than UMHB/HSC. To beat those guys we have to find a way to get the running game going. Additionally if we want a chance for an ASC championship the kicking game has to improve. Right now we just can't kick field goals or extra points -- that ain't gonna cut it against the big dogs. But, there was clear overall improvement this week, so I'm very optimistic looking forward!

Was perusing through some schedules on D3, and I was wondering: What in the heck is Louisiana College doing playing Alcorn State (an FCS school). And what in the heck is Alcorn State doing scheduling them (after playing Georgia Tech the week prior)?

Does LC have that big of a problem getting games?
Back in 1996 HSU whipped 1-AA (now FCS) Prairie View by a few touchdowns
That says something about upper level D3 playing lesser/lower level FCS.
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

Question for the HSU fans on the boards, do you guys have a QB battle now. Read an article that said Reed came out with an injury but didn't see any obvious injury in the limited video I watched. From the stats it appeared things seemed to start moving more under Hooper.

If memory serves, in 1996 Prairie View was well into a multi-year losing streak that eventually reached something like 80 games.  Still, I too think that an MH-B, Mt Union, Whitewater (in their best years), perhaps several others when they are at the top of their game, could compete against FCS lower level teams.  I don't think they would necessarily win, but they could be competitive.

I agree with Hooper at QB. He opens up all options of the offense. They other qb eliminates the amazing wr HSU has from the game because he can't pass. Don't see why you need a running qb when you have Hemphill.

My understanding is that it was injury that kept him out, but there was never really a question about who the better passer was. I think we will eventually move to a 2 QB system where Reed comes in as a change of pace from the more pocket-passer style of Hooper. That being said, I do think that Reed is an underrated passer, the offense is just operating under  a different philosophy when he is in the game.
The wild card is Peyton Killam, he is an Abilene high kid that is a better passer than Reed but is also a much stronger runner than Hooper. He has been injured since camp, but if he can get healthy and get in the game he may end up with the job.

For what it is worth Massey has a computer generated rating system for every team playing college football this year. He has Alabama #1, Georgia #2, Oklahoma #3, UMHB at #329 right ahead of FCS Alabama A&M, Mt Union at #281 right ahead of FCS Fordham. Mt Union is ahead of 27 of the 125 FCS schools. UMHB is ahead of 13. Davidson comes in next to last in FCS behind 6 D3 non-NESCAC schools (UWO, UWW, Brockport St, Frostburg St).

Keep in mind a good amount of FCS programs are non scholarship. The entire pioneer league and Ivy League don't offer athletic scholarships. Theoretically these programs shouldnt be much better than d3 however They do have some advantages over d3s in terms of ability to red shirt players, bigger facilities etc.

That being said the top 5 d3 school matchup vs a full scholarship FCS school has happened. In 2013 Wesley beat Charlotte 35-28. That wesley team (led by Current nfl player joe Callahan) was ranked 20 at the time but ended up losing in a semi final shootout to mount union so I'd say they were top 5 caliber. The Charlotte team they beat was only in there 1st or 2nd year of the program  but they still had 60 plus scholarship athletes and since they time they've moved up to fbs.

@d3jason

Wesley also beat Charleston Southern in 2011, they same year they lost to UMU 28-21 in the semis

Ralph Turner

in 2011, McMurry beat FCS UT San Antonio in the Alamodome in its inaugural game, 24-21.

That is more a case of 21 year mature seniors beating 18 year-olds, regardless of how talented the 18 year old are.
