"I don't think anybody felt we were really sharp, and I think (offensive coordinator) Stephen Lee was trying to get Jase to run our offense. It was an unfortunate deal that it resulted in a touchdown because our coaches weren't saying, 'Hey, let's go score against these sorry rascals.' It was just trying to run our offense and execute some things we had struggled with."

Really -  unfortunate they scored.

UMHB up 40 to  TLU 14  40 seconds on clock end of 4th.
Throw touchdown pass.
Classy
TLU was still trying to score. No reason UMHB shouldn't keep playing too.

Fair enough. Unfortunately, a few teams have that philosophy. I just never knew the CRU was one of them. So noted.

my guess is if coach fred is there it never happens. starting qb would be sitting and a fb would be pounding the middle til the clock ran out. not what happened this time though.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Pete Fredenburg can't be the only coach on that staff that knows how and when it's appropriate to call a kneel down and end the game.  Plain and simple, they messed this up.  And now, the problem is that nobody knows if and when the Crusaders are going to let off the gas.  What kind of foul will Crusaders fans, players, and coaches cry the next time UMHB does relax in an end of game situation, an opponent doesn't because now they know that the Crusaders are willing to throw bombs on them up through the final horn regardless of score, and one of yours gets hurt?  There's one (extremely selfish) reason to run your offense with the first string in that situation and there are 200 reasons why you don't.  UMHB screwed this one up.

Except they do know what UMHB is about.

Say what you want about this game but there has been a common feature in 248 of the 252 games that UMHB has ever played, Coach Pete Fredenburg. UMHB has scored over 50 points 83 times, over 60 points 42 times, and over 70 points 13 times. In most of those cases the game wasn't close and it was clear early on that it wouldn't be close.

With all of those lopsided games this is the first time I can recall a lot of noise about us running up the score.

Again say what you want about it but its hard to ignore the elephant in the room that wasn't there. Maybe Coach Pete makes the same calls and we do exactly the same thing but I think the team deserves some leeway on this one.

wally_wabash

I give a lot of leeway to teams with overwhelming talent and depth advantages over their opponents that end up in a lot of really lopsided games.  In this division, it happens a lot.  When teams with heavy score advantages are reaching deep into their bench and guys that rarely see the field are competing and scoring, I have no problem with that.  Most people take issue with passing in general later in lopsided games- I'm not one of them if you're doing it with kids further down the depth chart.  You can't call those players numbers and ask them to not go compete.  But throwing bombs with your #1 QB up 40-17 with 14 seconds left isn't cool.  That's where the line was crossed.  And you all know it.  That play call at that time with that score and with that personnel is indefensible.

I don't think UMHB is dirty or are a villainous team.  I think they messed up on this one though.

CruGuy

As a longtime Crusader fan, I don't think anyone deserves leeway on this one. Everyone who has ever watched football knows that it is a violent game. Players can get injured at any time. As soon as you can take knees and ensure that no one else gets injured, you do so. As soon as you can sub out the first string, you do so. There is no excuse for running a play up 26 with :14 seconds left. Beyond that, getting the ball back with 4:40 on the clock and up four TD's, UMHB had it's #1 RB rush 5x, and it's #1 QB drop back to throw 6x. That is inexcusable and demands an explanation. At best this is really stupid and reckless endangerment to the physical safety and long term well being of the student athletes that the coaches are privileged and entrusted to lead, and a poor strategy for keeping players healthy and fresh in game 3 of a hopefully 15 game season. In reality, we all know that whoever was calling plays probably got irked by some perceived offense that TLU committed (either in this game or sometime in the past), and so they wanted to teach them a lesson. That's just ugly vanity, ego, and pride. Somebody owes the proud and very supportive UMHB student body, alumni, and community a better explanation than, "we were just trying to run our offense."

I agree. I will add that in my experience of following CRU football, for 21 years, and UMHB sports in general, for 36 years, it is out of character. It is not what I have come to expect from one of my alma mater's athletic teams, but it was/is, I believe, an aberration.

Well Said - Lets move on.

Thank you!! Beating the dead horse does no good. Learn and move on.

I'm ready for a home game. The atmosphere is going to be crazy. I believe last weeks sluggish game for the Cru, will be fuel for this weekend. Hope so anyway. Go CRU.

Southwestern, if they can hold on to the ball, can do some damage on the ground. But its doubtful if they can complete a forward pass. Almost like they have an RB at QB. If UMHBs run defense comes to play -- this game will be over by half.

I agree. Too many turnovers against ETBU and next thing you know we are down 20 in the 1st. LA College done a fairly good job stopping the run enough to where we threw the ball more than I'd seen in 5 games. And you're right, he (QB) is usually the leader in rushing attempts and yards. This is only my 1st year watching their offense though. Could be a long day for the Pirates.
Hard work may not always result in success, but it will never result in regret!!

DFWCrufan

I think the Pirates will do fine, I am looking forward to the game and believe it will be entertaining.
