My feeling is this: I wouldn't be talking about it, as much, if Coach wasn't talking about it. If he wants teams to plan for 3 QB's, great, If he wants Jase to start and Luke to spell him here and there, great. I just want Coach to say what he wants.

I've said some of the same things in previous posts that have been mentioned in the last 24 hours. Jase has a great arm and can run when he needs to. Luke is more accurate and can get the ball fairly deep, and he can run well. DT can run really well, but I don't think he is as good with his arm or with reading defenses.

Finally, as much as we are improved over last year at QB, the improvement at OLine and consistency on the defensive side are what make us who we are, and to say that we want to get up and then smother you with our D is absolutely correct. We have historically played conservative on O, do enough to get up, and then ride the D to the W.

In other QB news, it looks like San Antonio product Will Chaney is no longer on the team. He was #19, started the season on the varsity, but has since been MIA. In looking at the roster today, he no longer appears.

I really liked his Huddle footage, and I was hopeful he would be a force for us down the line, but I guess with Two Jr. QB transfers playing, DT getting Wildcat time, he decided to move on. Hopefully, he doesn't go to a rival.

In your humble opinion, on how many ASC teams could Mr Chaney start?

Thanks

From his limited varsity time, it is hard to say, but with his 6A high school pedigree, height, big arm, and ability to run, I believe he could start right now or be the #2 on most teams. He played very well for the JV team last year and was called up to varsity as the season went on. You look at who we've played so far, I think he could start for Albright, SRS, Belhaven, and HPU. I think he would compete at HSU considering their QB competition this year. I think Southwestern and TLU would love to have him, especially Southwestern given their propensity to run the ball. I haven't seen ETBU or McMurry, but I bet he could start for MCM and be a close second at ETBU. I'm sure LC would love him as well.

But I think you're tugging on the loose sweater thread here and that is when the chips move in to the center of the table, UMHB wants to take the air out of the ball, control the clock, and win with defense.

My thoughts exactly. Coach needs to let all 3 QBs know what he wants instead of talking in code. And maybe he's already done that but it don't sound like it.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE:  Its really hard to take the lead when, as a QB, you're not sure where you stand relative to a teammate (or two). Its really hard to "let the past live in the past" when you know that last throw could get you replaced at some point.  You just want your QB out there reading the defense and reacting as he makes plays.  Then moving onto the next play.

That's as well stated as anything has been on this topic.  Thank you for that, SF.

Okay,  I am going to step on a few toes and my karma points are sure to take a few hits but as an old coach myself, here goes.

My dad had a favorite saying I loved, "Some people will bitch if they got hung with a new rope".  I find it very difficult to sit in the stands now days and listen to the fans around me complain about the coaching when they have no clue about what goes on in film sessions, classroom meetings, the practice field, the dressing room and even observing interactions on campus with students and professors.  The complaining on this board is going on about a team which has always hung their hat on defense but whose offense is now #1 in the nation in scoring. It sounds like reading this board is like sitting in the stands at my coaching son's high school games.

I know the saying that having two or more starting quarterbacks means you don't have one.  The non-starter QB is always more appealing when the starter stumbles.  However, it is hard to look at the national rankings of this team's offense and think we have a bad problem with the current state of affairs.

Also, why shouldn't QB's have to earn and keep their starting roles just like any position on the team.  A starter at left guard, defensive lineman, or free safety realizes that if they slip in performance their backup will jump in their spot.  Are QB's ever really different at any level.  The key is to do your job and trust the coaching staff to sort it out and make the decisions on who starts.

Maybe, just maybe, the outstanding and highly successful coach at UMHB has a plan, has more insight on team dynamics, and knows what he is doing more than most fans (even the insightful and dynamic posters on this board). Questioning coaches on QB decisions is rampant at any level of football  and seems to be taking hold in this discussion.  It almost sounds like the posters involved are trying to start a QB controversy!

Okay, that's my two cents worth.  Fire away!!

There's no controversy if the HBC, after three months of camp + reg season, just says "Jase the starter.  Next question."

This isn't just one season's worth of complaining. This is over a decade long pattern of indecision. The Posters don't want a QB controversy, there is QB controversy. The poster's want the coach to say, "This is our Guy." And then instill confidence in that player like he is actually the guy. They want QB consistency. I understand it's got to sound really obnoxious for fans of other teams in this conference to see UMHB's success and then hear them complain about anything. But watching this team play the season, it's got all the signs of wasting a season of unbelievable elite talent, because we get into a playoff game where we struggle to score, and we're rotating three guys in and out, and we have no confidence in our players and no confidence in our game plan. We've seen this before. Coach Fred has never proven to have a grasp on the QB situation or how to manage it.

I look at it this way, we have talent, the coaches have a much better idea how that fits into their scheme, I'll trust in them concerning this. Some of the concern, in the 2017 season was that the QB spot to the Cru faithful seemed a bit wobbley, but that was 2017 - 2018 we have seen outstanding work from the players in those positions so as for me, I see 2018 as a whole new creature, the old is gone and the new guys are in the slots. Even if coach is still looking, for the time being he likes what he does see and plays them and they produce so if that is still seeking, keep it up!

great to hear from you Roocru. As i said earlier, i have to remind myself that up by 3 scores is always  good. We have an embarrassment of riches and i'm grateful.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

It's Hoco game day eve. Hope everyone has a great and injury free games.

With all the talk on UMHB QBs this week almost forgot that Hammack started his college career at Mcmurry. Should have some old teammates still on the roster. Not a big story but that's all I could come up with on this game. Go CRU!!!
