Just got an email from a former professor/friend who works at Schreiner. They have a town hall about football tonight.
Do you want football or do you want to turn off the lights?

Is the assumption that it will be negative?

100% accurate right there, Ralph. Raised enrollment is the directive at most schools right now, and given Schreiner already regularly has 50-60 on the baseball team, adding a program where they can conceivably add 120-150 bodies in beds? Yes, there's the initial investment, but longterm it is, in theory, worth it.

Platteville listed in the first regional rankings. Good news for HSU thus far. We will see if that holds out the rest of the way.

I don't think they stay there if they lose either of their remaining games, but then again I didn't think they'd be there today.

McMurry to the SCAC in 2024. No word on what'll happen with football. https://mcmurrysports.com/news/2022/11/1/general-mcmurry-university-unifies-intercollegiate-athletics-joining-southern-collegiate-athletic-conference-in-fall-2024.aspx

Big news. I'm dying to hear Ralph's thoughts about his alma mater switching leagues.
Athletics has not had the same emphasis under Dr Sandra Harper as it did under Dr Robert E Shimp and Dr John Russell.

Dr Shimp was a graduate of Thiel and had connections to Ohio Wesleyan (Chair Dept of History) and Millikin (Provost & Acting President). Dr Shimp helped create the ASC and move McMurry to D-III from the NAIA.
More information on McMurry

Dr Harper began her Presidency in 2013, when McMurry was pulling back from D2.

In its history in the ASC, it is tied for 7th all-time in division championships.

The last division championships by sports were:

Baseball 2008 (Quad)
Men's Hoops in 2012
Women's Hoops in 2009, but had very competitive teams in the 1999 thru 2008 era including a Jostens' winner in 2008, Tara Richardson
Volleyball 2011
Men's Tennis 2010
Men's Soccer 2003
Women's Tennis 2012.

McM is 4th all time in conference championships with 49, including 17 men's and 13 women's outdoor track and field.
Last conference championships by year are:
MT&F 2022
WT&F 2022
Men's Hoops 2012
Women's Hoops 2006
Men's XC 2000
Women's XC 2006
Men's Golf 2004
Women's Golf 2008
Women's Tennis 1999
Women's Volleyball 1997.

Former Track Coach Barbara Crousen was the 1st woman to win a Men's National Championship in any sport, in any Division in the NCAA in 2008 and then repeated in 2012. She was Women's runner-up in 2002 and Men's Runner-up in 2009.

You can see that Athletics has not been an emphasis of the university over the last decade.

It will be interesting to see who hosts if/when UMHB plays Trinity.

Hard to imagine it not being HSU @ Trinity in the first round with the winner playing against the winner of UMHB/? at Trinity, unless UMHB is paired against an even higher seed than Trinity from another region.

This is definitely possible. I hope HSU makes the playoffs, and if there's any justice they will. Also it will be interesting to see if UMHB's one road loss on a tougher schedule is enough to put them behind Trinity in the playoff home game pecking order.

The thing that stinks for HSU is they won't know where they stand till the very end. Since UWP is "ranked" in this first ranking, one could assume they could stay there till they lose which is not likely next week but is definitely possible in the last week of the season at UW La Crosse. So if UWP loses in the final weekend HSU will have to sit and wonder what that means for them until they do or don't see their name on selection Sunday.

As for Trinity and UMHB, as much as I would love a home game and think UMHB is the better team by the criteria Trinity sure seems to win out. Not only should they be undefeated at the end of the season, we will have multiple common opponents that Trinity beat by bigger margins. One thing that would be interesting for the trio of Texas teams is if Wheaton falls to Wash U this weekend and how that would affect the bracket since that would take away a key victory for Trinity.

Unless they left Wheaton in the rankings to give NCC and Wash U that WRO.

If UWP is ranked next week, they'll count as a regionally ranked opponent.  RROs come from the 2nd rankings and the final rankings done after play concludes in Week 11.  So if you're keeping score at home and wondering if a team is a regionally ranked opponent or not, it depends on which rankings they appear in:

11/2 rankings: No. These teams are not going to be considered regionally ranked at the time of selection and seeding.
11/9 rankings. Yes.  All of these teams will be considered regionally ranked opponents for anybody who played them at the time of selection and seeding.
11/11 rankings. Yes.  These are the final rankings that we'll get usually sometime during the week after selections are made.  All of these teams are also regionally ranked.

But the final rankings are what the committee would uses to make Pool C selections right? And if UWP loses in their final game of the season I would assume they wouldn't be ranked anymore so they would no longer count as a regionally ranked opponent, right? Also did you mean to put 11/9 and then 11/11?

Pat Coleman

That 11/11 ranking is the final one after all games, so that date is right, unless you feel it has to be 11/12.

What Greg says is correct, anyone in the 11/9 or 11/11 ranking would be considered an RRO for its opponents.

LOL.  We've got a whole other set of problems if the final rankings are done on 11/11.  Of course, those rankings won't be done until after games are done on 11/12.
