Speaking of schedule has anyone heard any movement on the HSU schedule?

Coach Burleson just tweeted again today, looking for an opponent.

My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Thoughts on this???

I don't think the drop in revenue can be mentioned enough in this discussion. UMHB would be going from over 200 males (we started football to gain male students) who are paying what the average UMHB students pay to half that at best. Prehaps we will be forced to leave D3 but I just see us doing almost anything before we lose money to be a .500 team in D2 or FCS.

Absolutely. Obviously I've shared the same viewpoint on here before as well. Thought it was an interesting piece that covered the pros and cons of a move up as well. I think people get caught up in the idea of being a D1 or D2 school, but don't realize the significant impact it can have, and in some cases, diminish the overall athletic experience, for both student athletes and fans. I know that sounds weird, but when you take a cut like that in terms of revenue, there becomes less and less money for facility upgrades, promotion events, and other cool things that we associate with big-time sports (esp. football).

UMHB03

I think that staying in D3 is the ideal outcome for UMHB, but unless the ASC can merge with SCAC (for football at the very least) or some NAIA schools can be convinced to join, that may not be an option. Moving to D2 (FCS would be biting off more than we could chew IMO) would be a last resort, but one that may be unavoidable.

The way I see it, most of those going to SCAC left the ASC to get away from UMHB, why would they leave just to bring you along with them?  Also, there is no value is DII, D1/FCS at least bring revenue in through conference payouts and big money FBS games.  There is revenue in DI/FCS, no revenue in DII.

My hope for the SCAC-ASC merger is the SCAC is suddenly not near as solid as it was when the new people joined on. If my math is right by the time all the new people come online, Trinity and Southwestern will be gone leaving them with 6 members, 2 of which will be starting football from nothing. With only 6 members they either will be doing some not so fun round robin scheduling or looking for quite a few non conference games. Another hope of mine is the powers that be realize that one size fits all approach to AQs needs to be adjusted and football is made 7 or 8 to help the Pool C problem but I realize that is probably a longer shot than the merger.

Pat Coleman did an excellent interview with Collegiate Sports Connect about the future of Division 3 football in Texas ... focusing on the ASC and the SCAC as well as a potential UMHB move (all theoretical, no rumors about there being any actual motion).  UNfortunately you do have to sign up for an account and they're focused on school administrators so you basically have to make some stuff up to complete the process.  But it is worth your while to do so.

Good interview! My only issue is the comment that St. Thomas didn't have a viable D2 conference option. They did have a good D2 conference option in the NSIC which is robust and a good fit geographically, similar to UMHB/HSU and the Lonestar. St. Thomas obviously didn't think it was a good fit institutionally and got the NCAA to agree.

Thanks. I appreciate the comment, but I disagree -- D-II is not viable for a school which values hockey. That's the difference between the two situations, in my mind.
