I consider Ralph the guru of the American Southwest Board.  He usually knows what he is talking about and he really has a grasp of the history.  I always look forward to what he has to say.

As long as teams are playing everyone on their roster, I don't have a problem with them scoring a lot of points.  Those kids practice just like the starters and I don't think you should ever tell them to stop trying to score.  Should we tell the defense to stop tackling when a team has a big lead?  Roocru's point about the number of times UMHB and HSU have scored over 50 points was an eye opener to me.

I couldn't be happier with my son's decision to attend UMHB and play for Coach Fred and his coaching staff.  They have had a wonderful impact on his life and I will forever be grateful to them for that.  I think the criticisms of Coach Fred are unwarranted.  In my 3 years of following the program, he has always played a lot of kids.  Remember last year, the 3rd team tailback made the key run against Mt. Union.  UMHB has a lot of talented players, so I would expect some lopsided scores.

My question is: What do you do when your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th team players continue to score points on simple running plays?

As a coach what do you do.

Do you tell your guys to not block as hard, not run as hard, not hit as hard, or to quit playing at all. Do you send 9 people out on offense instead of 11 to make it fair. I mean what do you do.............Somebody that is a coach tell me.

Crualum04,

That's a great question.  What do you do?  I was in attendance at the first game HSU played against SRSU last year.  As tripled14 so astutely pointed out, the score was 79-17.  It could have been a whole lot worse than that.  A two paragraph quote from the game write up said,

"Jordy Bernhard the Cowboys' redshirt-freshman transfer quarterback from Indiana had a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter and at the end of the stanza HSU led 58-7. Thurston Ashley, Brad Clark and Quinton Jones all scored touchdowns on the ground in the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys took over possession on a Micah Putnam interception with 2:47 to go in the game and HSU took a knee on four straight plays and let the Lobos have the ball back."

Short of taking a knee, there was nothing the Cowboys could do.  SRSU wasn't that bad, things just got out of hand and everything HSU tried turned to points.  I'm sure the same thing went on in Belton Saturday.  The above scenario is how Keeling handled it.  Fredenburg just handles it a little differently.  I don't know if there is a right or wrong way, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Good grief!!!!  Everybody needs to chill out about "running up the score."  It happens every year.  A game gets out of hand.  Coach K or Coach F can bring in the 2nd, 3rd, or 15th string team, call conservative plays, and things will continue to get out of hand.  The kids that come in, who don't get to play that often anyway, have something to prove.  They want to score!!!  That's the name of the game.  I could almost guarantee you that neither one of those coaches wants to humiliate one of their fellow coaches.  Unfortunately, games like this happen and sometimes there is not much you can do about it.

The point of this board is to get on here and have spirited discussions about the team and conference that you support.  Everybody has their opinion on "running up the score," but keep the name calling and spitefullness to a minimum.  Nobody wants to hear that.

Anyway, just my 2 cents!!!

The Alvarez family is in my prayers, he was a good guy and fun to be around thanks minni.  Sthrncwby, and Fann where ya'll at?

Tiger_Eye

I will be praying for the Alvarez family. That is just so sad about Eric. I did not know him personally, but I heard about him all the time. Stamford being right up the road from Hawley we knew a lot of those guys and Eric Alvarez was a name you heard year round, no matter what season it was. I was checking the Abilene-Reporter News page this morning for updates on playoff games and saw an article about a Coach Alvarez from Rotan...my heart sunk, I knew it was him. It's just terrible.

It's hard to believe that another season is about over.  Let's hope that the ASC teams make a deep run into the playoffs.  Can't wait for them to get started.

Roocru--

I don't take your post as a personal attack.  I understand where you're coming from, but know that I was making a finite point.

When you're in the public eye--the way our coaches are--assumptions can only be gleaned from your public body of work:  the conduct of your team, the conduct of your assistants, the way you play the game, etcetera.  I've heard that Coach Fredenberg is a stand-up guy--which is at odds with what happened Saturday.  I don't know him, and chose my words carefully above (which is why I referred to his track record).  Don't read more into that than is actually there.

My assumption--that word again--is that your personal and professional actions match your core philosophy.  Sure, everybody gets a little carried away on occaision, and that's because we're human.  But going for it on fourth and goal from the one--when you're already up by 65 points--strikes me as unsportsmanlike.  Since I don't know Coach Fredenberg or his staff, my hope is that this is just an outlying example of getting carried away.

And, BTW, this has nothing to do with kids not playing hard and not trying to score.  It has everything to do with the adults taking the responsibility for the teachable moments that our students/athletes face every day.  If those kids couldn't get in the end zone--for whatever reason--on the previous three plays, then so be it.  Kick.  You've driven down, and scored.  Point proven.  Going for it there, though, rubs the other team's face in it.  And, at least at the religiously-oriented schools that comprise most of the ASC, I'd hope that the example set--during these teachable moments--would be one where sportsmanship trumps everything else.

I won't say anything else about this.  I thought it was over and done with Sunday, to be honest.  In fact, if UMHB's assistant baseball coach, Derrick Dunaway (a.k.a. tripled 14), weren't calling me out every time he posts in here, I'd not have mentioned it again.

Should we make assumptions about the type of coaching the UMHB baseball team will receive based on his statements in here?   (Rhetorical question--I don't really care one way or the other, just illustrating my point.)

I don't mind being disagreed with.  I do mind the lack of even the smallest amount of respect which he has shown me from post #1.

First of all get your info right.  I am not even associated with UMHB, I just like to comment when you say dumb statements.  Now you are calling out other UMHB coaches?  Dude who do u think u are? Go take your silly photos and leave the coaches alone.

Josh Bowerman

Derreck, I reverse looked up your IP address.

You worked for for ETBU's baseball staff before coming back to UMHB, where you played--which is why you got mad when I said your SID friend's release was self-serving.

Calm down fellas.  A possible solution to the "running up the score".  The team that is ahead can let their position players try different positions.  WR go to RB, OL to DL, DL to LB.  You still keep your athletes on the field, just in a different environment.

Coached my first 8th grade girls basktbell game last night.  I have no clue how to coach basketball and we pulled out a win.  Not a real high scoring game.  I played 'em all and let them have fun.  Everyone calm down, I had no chance of running up the score.

Has anyone heard about funeral arrangements for Avly?

dsc

Josh, how do you "reverse lookup" someone from an IP address?  (You can respond via email...)

No word on Alvarez funeral...

Did anyone see the JV game last night?  (HSU @ UMHB)

If so, please comment.

Thanks.
