From what I've heard, the offense isn't as explosive (they have a shifty running back), the QB isn't as good as Desplainas but is fair, the o-line is average.  The d-line is very light and quick. The defense stunts alot. The strength of the Defense is the front four. Special teams is good put not near as good as UMHB's. I predict that TU scores 7 points at the most. UMHB's defense is probably the best in the nation. UMHB's offense can run the football on anyone.  TU doesn't have any big d-line to slow the run game down.  I think it will be a good game but UMHB is alot better than TU. However, any given saturday anything can happen.  UMHB has to come out ready to play. Let's go CRU!! Take Care of Business!!!

Austin College Football Coach Takes New Role

SHERMAN – Austin College officials announced late Monday that Head Football Coach David Norman has elected to take on a new non-coaching opportunity at the College at the start of the next semester. Effective Jan. 1, 2006, Norman will become Assistant Director of Athletics and Department Chair for Exercise and Sports Science.

Norman's new role will encompass both fund- and friend-raising responsibilities that are needed for the College's impending transition into the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) in the 2006-2007 season. Austin College competes at the NCAA Division III level in the American Southwest Conference (ASC). The new conference is more geographically diverse than the ASC and so the need for resource enhancements in the Athletics program has come to fore. In addition to athletic enhancement duties, Norman will have administrative responsibilities associated with assistant athletic director and departmental chair and will continue to teach courses in ESS.

"I am excited about this new opportunity that permits me to continue working with the Austin College Athletics program and its student-athletes as we move into an exciting new era, joining the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference," Norman said.

Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics Tim Millerick thanked Norman for his ongoing service to Austin College. "I am pleased that he has agreed to perform this new role that will support all of our programs and assist us with our transition to the SCAC," adding that "It is reassuring to me to know that I will have his assistance with the various challenges that lie ahead for the Austin College Athletic program. Additionally, he will continue to lead the ESS Department and teach as he has done previously."

Norman is a 1983 graduate of Austin College, and he received his master of arts in teaching degree from Austin College in 1984. He was named his alma mater's 29th head football coach in March 1994. Norman joined the staff at Austin College in 1989, when he was hired as offensive coordinator and head baseball coach. Prior to returning to Austin College, he had a successful five-year stint at Denison High School as an assistant coach where he helped coach four district championship teams.

As a member of Division III non-scholarship athletics, Austin College demonstrates the value it places on the educational attainment of each of its student-athletes. Along with a commitment to athletic excellence, academic excellence is synonymous with Austin College football during Norman's tenure, the program has produced 11 Academic All-Americans and 183 Academic All-Conference selections.

Norman himself played on a few championship teams. His Big Sandy High School team was a state champion, and Norman played for the Kangaroos in 1981 when Austin College won the NAIA National Championship. He also was a member of two TIAA championship teams at Austin College.

Might be a silly question, but does this mean he is stepping down from coaching? I've read through this three times and unless I miss it, it doesn't specify one way or the other.

I've been in Florida on business since the end of last week, and this is my first opportunity to weigh in on the final weekend in the ASC:

First off, many congratulations to the UMHB players.  Aside from the hiccup at HPU, you were clearly the best team in the conference, and it would have been a shame that a hurricane cost you the title.  Go far, and represent us well in the playoffs.

I'm disappointed in my HSU Cowboys, though.  IMO, I felt the team was a year away going into the season, and the loss of two QBs did nothing to strengthen the psyche, experience level and ultimately the performance of the team.  Even so, we still had a great opportunity to win the ASC and advance to the playoffs last Saturday.  I don't want to take anything away from Jordy or Ryan, but Jordan's loss in the second game hurt significantly.  Offensively, I don't think we were all that tough up front, and that hurt us trying to run the ball in several critical spots.

I'm disappointed that the HSU defense was as inconsistent as they were--fantastic at times and failing to show up at others--including last Saturday.  The front seven seemed to have difficulty all season long putting pressure on the opposing QB, something that I can only attribute to toughness and attitude.  I've seen them play--they had the size and ability to get it done, but for whatever reason, couldn't.  Our defense just hasn't had the same swagger since Mike Phillips left the coaching staff a few years back, and that really was evident in the front seven this year.  The secondary needs to tighten up, too--lest anyone think that I'm putting the fact that HSU gave up over 225 yards per game through the air on the front seven.  But giving up over 100 YPG on the ground and over 225 through the air just won't get you into the playoffs in the ASC.

HSU was also only even in turnover differential and next to last in penalty yardage per game.  HSU was also dead last in the ASC in red zone effectiveness.  Dead stinking last--despite the fact that they had more opportunities than anyone else in the ASC.  Not statistics that leave me with a positive feeling about the mental preparedness and mental toughness of this year's team.

There are a lot of experienced guys from this year's team coming back next season.  I hope that the way they finished this season will serve as motivation for the offseason and next year.  It could be good, but only if we play tough and smart.

Well to those that think TU will be no contest might want to be a little more cautious.  As far as total defense MHB ranks 17th in the country with 256.7 yds allowed per game, TU ranks 24 with 261.8.  In scoring defense MHB ranks 5th allowing 9.9 points a game and TU ranks 3rd allowing 9.2 points per game.  I think this is going to be a good game, as it has been over the past years, but I dont believe that MHB will walk over Tigers and might be suprised at how physical these tigers are,  compared to the past.

I just talked to one of my sources at Austin College.  David Norman is stepping down as head football coach.  It was a mutual decision in every sense of the word.  His new position was created especially for him to aid AC in the transition from the ASC to the SCAC and is a promotion for him as well.

The new position is designed to both raise funds and "friends" for the university's athletic program.  He will be working to identify new alumni resources for the athletic department as well as trying to reach out to past alumni to aid in generating excitement as well as funds for the new move in conferences.  David is a very strong "people"  person and this will be a strength in this new position  that was recognized by the administration.  Several years ago there was a similar position at the university held by the former AD, Dr. Bob Mason.  I believe this is where the idea came from.

I firmly believe that had Coach Norman not  accepted this position, he would have remained as head coach for another year.  No news yet on when the head coach position will be formally opened.

I would like to take a minute and respond to Josh Bowerman's comment about the critic he gave on the TEAM of HSU.  I really dont understand and never will understand why people think they can judge a team when they have no idea what they are talking about.  Maybe you need to go back to Florida and get your brain back because obviously you left it on the beach.  That defense you had nothing  good to say about is pretty solid, so solid that the examples are too many to list.  You are correct about how solid  Mike Phillips defense was but I guarantee you this Jim Abbates is not much worse, my opinion on the same level.  Did it ever cross your mind that maybe in this conference teams are excelling in all areas.  Teams are not going to expect to stay on bottom for ever.  That is why people recruit more and change coaches is so they can improve.  HSU is no worse that ever before, teams are starting to play better.  God Forbid teams refuse to get better and try and compete with HSU, THAT IS WHY IT IS A GAME!  MORON
