Very Interesting article about Abilene as a College town.

It seems that there are better sit-down restaurants and coffee shops on the South side of town ;D ;)

baddog

RT -- Yep, on the waaaaaay southside of town. The way Abilene is now (with Wylie, the southern "suburb", McM is pretty central). All that means is that McM students have shorter commutes to their table-serving jobs than HSU students do. ;D
Come on, football season. We have to have something else to talk about!! :D
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

Just to let you know, a couple of Stout Blue Devils have taken up residency in the Great state of Texas.  El Paso to be exact.  They are receivers Matt Sprester and Dan Austin who combined had 8 receptions with 140 yards and 3 touchdowns against HSU back in 2003.

I'm trying to convince them to attend the Point/HSU game in September.  If they go, I'm sure there are fans who would show them a good time.
I may not have much to say, but I'll say it anyway.

Ralph,

I don't know if its a college town mentally, but it has the culture you expect to find in a college town. . . lots of liberal thinking and art  ;D

That said, I only came here for grad skoul :P   ;)
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Josh Bowerman

Trust me, there's not much liberal thinking in Abilene.

Is El Paso *really* part of Texas?  Crimeny, it's 450+ miles to Abilene from there.

I think El Paso is an acquired taste.   :P

A trip to the game would be a good diversion.

The drive between El Paso and Abilene is also an acquired taste. ;D

Just a football note.  Antonio Shelton from Vernon will be playing at HSU next year.  He played WLB at Vernon High School.  Was a key player on the 13-2 semi final team of 2003.  Took off two years to attend Jr. College.  Looks like he is 6',  225.  He should add some depth at LB.

Pat--

Great feature story on the Redlands football team on the front page.  Very nicely done!

The link above is for the Corpus Christi Caller Times article where three football players from Flour Bluff have agreed to play for UMHB.  Flour Bluff is a 4A school which finished the season 12-1 and finished as District 31-4A champions ahead of eventual state runner-up Calallen HS.  The article is reprinted below.

Flour Bluff standouts to play football at Mary Hardin-Baylor

Flour Bluff's Joe Brunemeier, Matt Smith and Kevin McColskey will all play football at Mary Hardin-Baylor next season.

Brunemeier was an all-district performer at safety and played some quarterback last year. Smith was an all-district linebacker and led the team with 10 sacks. McColskey passed for more than 1,900 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Mary Hardin-Baylor, located in Belton, is a Division III school, which means it can't give out athletic scholarships.
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

I wish that we could know about more players that agree to play at D III's.

Vernon had their running back Chris Zamora visit HSU today.  I hope to know more by tomorrow.  He went without a scholarship this past football year although I know several D II's were looking at him.  Maybe he will end up at HSU.

From the NCAA homepage, the ruling on the McMurry appeal on the mascot...

http://www2.ncaa.org/portal/media_and_events/press_room/2006/may/20060518_mcmurray_mascot_rls.html

I note the irony that the NCAA cannot spell "McMurr(a)y" correctly in the URL of the announcement.

Nor does it have the date right: Tuesday, May 18.

Ralph--

That URL isn't working--I think you have to access it directly from the AA's website.

That's unfortunate news.  What are you guys going to do next?

Josh, Good morning!

Coming from a fellow D3 poster who has had the honor of erecting the tipi of one of our Native American tribes, the wishes are appreciated.

The URL probably reflects the customization/security process that the NCAA has constructed for its web site so it can track the origin of every URL that it displayed via its "my portal" configuration.

Please go to www.ncaa.org.

Look down the left side bar showing NCAA News.

Under division specific for D-III, click the tab.  It was the first story in the column on, a news release from NCAA Vice President Bernard Franklin of Membership.

The President's office is managing the media relations.  The next regular meeting of Board of Trustees is scheduled for June.
