Josh B - Wes Cooper graduated and is playing for the Corpus Christi Hammerheads of the Intense Football League. I have heard that the new coach at LC has recruited an impressive group of freshmen.  :o

Well, I thought he was a senior last year, but decided to put my pre-post trust in other printed "sources"--like the LC website.  That's what I get, I suppose, for believing anyone but d3football.com.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake.   :)

Given this, I might need to rethink my ASC predictions from 5-7, but I ultimately think LC, TLU and McM will all be pretty close to each other this season, both from a talent and experience standpoint.

Josh B - Just trying to keep you on the straight and narrow. With the impressive recruiting skills shown by the new LC coach while he was at Evangel Christian High School, the Cajun Cats could be the suprise team in the ASC this year.

Josh Bowerman

No offense taken.  Maybe this will be the impetus Alex needs to get Wes' photo off the football front page!   ;)

OopsI really intended to spell surprise correctly the first time.

So I haven't been over here since we played UMHB a couple of years ago...How does HSU look for the upcoming year?  Are they the favorite to win the conference?  Should be a great battle the second game of the year with my boys, but neither side has a cupcake first game...

Josh Bowerman

48--

Coach Keeling says in a Dave Campbell's Texas Football interview that "he'll be disappointed if we're not pretty good".

Best answer I can give you, but DCTF has HSU picked to win the ASC with UMHB 2nd.  We'll find out on 09/16 where we stand with the rest of the country.

BTW, d3fanatic.  I knew that I had seen the Wes Cooper thing in more than one place.  I checked my DCTF last night, and sure enough--he's got Wes returning for LC, too!  All of this to say, at least I'm not totally insane.   ;)

Josh B - I looked at the 05 2-deep for HSU and it appears they will have to do some reloading. 3 key receivers, and linemen on both sides of the ball must be replaced. If it wasn't for the quality of their programs, one might think that 06 would be a down year for HSU & UMHB.

HSU is supposedly getting some help from some guys in at least a couple of those positions that were starters/saw significant time in 2004, but sat out last year for different reasons--at least according to DCTF.

Reggie Robinson and Terrance Penns (if they are back, as mentioned in DCTF) are legitimate potential all conference guys on the DL, and slotback Mychal Carrillo--who played in every game last season, caught 28 passes, scored 3 TDs and had over 400 all purpose yards--might as well be considered "a starter".  As is, HSU has 7 guys back on defense (9 if you count Robinson and Penns, who were starters before missing last season) and 6 on offense--8 if you count Carrillo and Patrick Shelby--who is a former starter but missed almost all of last year to injury (and whom is also supposedly back for HSU).  Plus, I've read that Will Galusha may spend some time at WR this season, in addition to his DB duties.

Maybe mhb8904 can shed some light on the potential return of som of HSU's prodigal sons, and let us know what kind of transfers to expect in.  He's a UMHB guy, but at the HSU Logsdon Seminary.  I'll see what I can dig up, too.

Josh,

What I've heard is that there are some good transfers coming that should make an immediate impact.  Someone said that one of the incoming is as fast or faster than Q.  Jordan's coming back and when last I saw him he was looking strong and ready to play.  A mutual friend told me earlier this week that he's off to europe to do missions work for a few with a group that does rock climbing.  I hope he doesn't do anything to crazy.

I keep reading down year for MHB or HSU, but down year must be relative, because both just seem to fill spots on the go.  I can't wait for the season.  Looks like I'm going to have to make a couple of trips to Belton and make sure I can watch a few HSU home games.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Me too.

I don't mind climbing rocks, its the falling off that complicates things.

Josh...

You are the likely candidate (but, more the merrier) to lay out the bare necessities about travel from Portland, OR, to HSU. Would you be so kind?
   Moderate motels
   Travel distances
   Oil barons with private planes
   Mild Texas Bar B Que
   Miles to Texas Women's College

Toby Taff

Well, I'm not Josh, but maybe I can offer some help:

Moderate motels -- Depends on what you like.  Near HSU you can stay at LaQuinta, Super 8, Days Inn, Holiday Inn Express, or the Whitten Inn (the whitten inn has a deal where if you guess the right room, your room is free.)

Travel distances -- All of those places are within a couple of minutes drive from HSU, there are also many hotels south with a 4 - 6 mile drive.  This is also the location of the mall and most of the dining.

From the airport, the listed hotels are about a 5 minute drive, the southside hotels and shopping are about the same, you just go the other way on the loop.

Oil barons with private planes - sorry, can't help here...

Mild Texas Bar B Que - I recommend Joe Allen's, Sharon Allen's (divorced couple that use the same recipes.  Sharon actually hired Joe's long time cook away from him.)  or Harold's (I recommend Harold's but unless your here during the week, you're probably out of luck.)  Harlowe's is also supposed to be good...

Miles to Texas Women's College - TWU is 185 miles from Abilene, but why go to TWU there are three university campuses to choose from in Abilene :D

Dens--

I'll do my best for you, with the caveat that BBQ down here is a very personal thing.   ;)

*  I'm personally partial to Joe Allen's BBQ, and I think I made a believer out of Ron Boerger during our descent on Abilene last season.  Harold's Pit BBQ is pretty good stuff, too--but he's not open in the evening and I'm not sure about lunch on the weekends.  If I were you, I'd stay away from Harold's Damn Hot Relish.

*  Mapquest says its about 2,000 from McMinnville to Abilene.  30 hours by car--whew!  (I think I'd look into flying)  Southwest flies out of Portland and into Love Field in Dallas, which is about a 3.5 hour, easy drive from Abilene (easy because it's all Interstate 20, and the speed limit is 70 mph).

*  There's no such thing as an expensive hotel room in Abilene.  All the establishments should be well under $100/night.  There is a Hampton, a Fairfield, a Courtyard, a bunch of Best Western/Holiday Inn/Motel 6/Super 8 kind of places, and a place called the McM Elegante Suites, which used to be an Embassy Suites.  Many of these hotels are very close to the mall, so dining and entertainment options for Friday night are easily accessible.

*  I know a couple of oil barons, but the only one with a private plane is committed elsewhere.  ;)

*  Texas Women's University is located in Denton, which is about an hour north of Ft. Worth.

Hope that this is helpful.
