Texas D-II school seeks permission to talk to Bomar
By Mark Schlabach
ESPN.com

Texas A&M-Commerce coach Scotty Conley isn't sure when, or if, former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar will be allowed to play college football again. But Conley said Bomar has a home with the Division II Lions if he is reinstated by the NCAA.

Conley said he sent a request to Oklahoma officials on Thursday asking that Bomar be released from his scholarship with the Sooners. Under NCAA rules, Conley isn't allowed to have contact with Bomar until he is released by Oklahoma.

Conley said he has known Bomar's father, Jerry Bomar, a longtime high school football coach in Texas, for several years because Conley recruited many of Bomar's players.

"We've sent a release request to Oklahoma to ask permission to talk to him," Conley said during a telephone interview Friday. "We don't know what Rhett is going to do. We're in the dark as much as anyone."

My guess is that he ends up at the same NAIA school Ramonce Taylor ends up at.

I'd be very surprised if Bomar ends up at Texas College.  A&M Commerce is an interesting choice.

Josh Bowerman

But he'd have to be reinstated by the NCAA to do that, and my guess is that isn't going to happen--at least not this year.

My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

If McMurry decides to sue the NCAA, I will contribute to a fund to pay the cost.

I would also donate some money (I don't have very much but I would send some in).

What is the breakdown of schools that have lost their appeals over the mascots by division?  Have any of the D1 schools lost an appeal?

Bill, this is the most current that I can find.

Division I

Alcorn State University (Braves) has removed Indian connotations.
Central Michigan University (Chippewas) has the support of the Chippewas
Florida State University (Seminoles) has the support of the Florida Seminole tribe.
University of Utah (Utes) has the support of the Ute Tribe.
Bradley University (Braves) removed all Native American references and became generic and are up for review in five years.
Arkansas State University (Indians) has not changed.
University of Illinois-Champaign (Illini) was forced to remove all Native American references.  They are now the Fighting Illini, like the Fighting New Mexicans.
University of Louisiana-Monroe (Indians) changed to Warhawks.
University of North Dakota (Fighting Sioux) are fighting the issue in court.
College of William and Mary (Tribe) must remove the green and gold feathers from its logo.

Division II

Catawba College (Indians) has the support of the Catawba Indians
Midwestern State University (Indians) has changed to the Mustangs
Indiana University-Pennsylvania (Indians) changed to Bears.
Chowan College (Braves) changed to Hawks and kept the feather on the logo.
Newberry College SC (Indians) will not change.
Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Savages) changed to Savage Storm.

Division III

Carthage College (Redmen) changed to Red Men/Lady Reds and dropped the feathers on the logo.
McMurry University (Indians) lost second appeal...not hostile and abusive in and of ourselves, but cannot prevent a hostile or abusive environment.
Mississippi College (Choctaws) received permission from the Mississippi Choctaws.

Another fourteen teams which were on the list in 2001 have been cleared or have changed mascots.  Interestingly, Wheaton College IL changed from the hostile "Crusaders" to the "Thunder" in about 2000.

The option I think McMurry ought to select in the face of an irreversible tide of political correctness is to change its nickname but retain its traditions consistent with its founding president's intentions.  Given that the NCAA has ostensibly allowed schools whose nicknames and mascots are patterned after regionally-indigenous tribes (Florida State Seminoles, Utah Utes, Mississippi College Choctaws, etc.), McMurry should replace the "Indian" moniker with "Kaws." McMurry's first president had a history with the Kaw tribe.  Interestingly enough, the only person of Indian descent to become a Vice President of the United States was one-eighth Kaw (Charles Curtis, VP in the Hoover administration from 1929-1933).

Weak Safety

I think McMurry should change their name to the McMurry Engines.  Sounds kinda like Injuns.  ;)
