Atomic Ross

Quote from: Bill McCabe on September 17, 2006, 08:03:45 AMIt also looks like UMHB has gotten their act together.  Congratulations.

That game was a sham.  Not that Sul Ross was going to ever win it, but at least the referees could have just let the two teams play.  Between the spurious "roughing" calls and SR's best reciever getting thrown out of the game in the first series, it's almost as if the league refs have some kind of directive or vendetta against the Lobos, which I can't fathom, because the best record they've had in ten years is 3-7.

It's the first conference game for SR since the Lousiana College game, where the refs again acted like they were paid off.  I don't get why so many malicious calls are made against such a thoroughly underperforming team.

I have seen Sul Ross play 3 times in my life and everytime they play there are many personal fouls and unsportsmenlike penatlies against them. They are always well deserved, cheapshots and I have seen 2 SR players that have been getting blocked then outta now where they take a swing at the player blocking them. Now with saying that

Bill, UMHB did put up a big score but I think they can still play better I have not seen both in person but listening to the webcast and reading about these two teams I would have to say that right now HSU is the best team in the ASC but that could change when the Cowboys roll into Belton. The CRU can't afford to have a let down against a capable TLU team I think that game will tell us alot about the Crusaders as a whole.

Miss Coll is much stronger than we suspected.  Coach Joseph seems to have gotten some talent this year.  The road win over TLU certainly caught many of us by surprise.

The Chocs will face McMurry in Clinton this week!

As mentioned on the front page, HSU Slot Back Mychal Carrillo had a great game for the HSU Cowboys coming out of the slot.  The way he used his blockers downfield (Way to go linemen, in getting down field!!!!!!!!) to set up his TD was beautiful.

However, I still maintain that the best wide receiver that I saw this weekend was McM's Dusty Thornhill.  Dusty was the go-to guy his freshman year, and his catches this weekend were spectacular.  It is good to see him contributing so much this year.

The difference in the second half was McM's Bert Green's punting.  The All-American track star/Wide Receiver/Punter buried LC at the LC 4, 1 and 12 yard lines into the south wind in the 4th quarter!

I also liked how clean the McM-LC game was...very few stupid mistakes and penalties!

Finally a big shout-out to the McMurry Marching Band.  Director Chris Neal is marching 55 members plus a twirler and a flag corps of 9.  The six Double B-flat Bass Horns (my instrument  ;)) give a full sound and the Drum Line is great!!!  They make for a real college football environment!

OK Josh and Ralph.

I saw two people yesterday at both games  One was a big guy wearing a black shirt taking pictures and the other an older fellow with glasses and wearing a burgundy shirt also sporting a camera and both in khaki shorts.  Were either of you the guys I saw?
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Josh Bowerman

Nope.  The guy in the black shirt was the competition.   ;)

I was wearing a white shirt with purple and tan shorts.  I was on the HSU sidelines for everything but the pregame, as that's where the better light was.

Dang it!  I guess I can dump those pictures ;D

Still nothing from the proud tlugrad!!!!!!  Well I guess he still has his tail between his legs and his bone in his mouth choking on it.  I know I am going to hear something on this, so im prepared!!!!! :D

Talked to some of the HSU players and many were very dissappointed with their individual performances and felt they played ok as a team.  Much room for improvement. But with that said good win for the Cowboys and time to get ready for next week.  Get better each week and we will be in Salem in December!!!

wildcat11

Hats off to a class program.  Looking forward to seeing the Cowboys at the 'Catdome next season.

minni

wildcat I am assuming you were in attendance, what were your thoughts on the atmosphere of Texas football.  I guess im really asking on your overall thoughts on your visit to our wonderful state???

minni

tlugrad, short lived trip in the top 25!!!!!!  Man you are singing an entirely different tune this week, and its only early monday morning.  Let me know when you pull the bone out of your mouth.  You had to know this was going to be coming your way when you lost.

Good win for the Cowboys though!!!!!

Ralph, I too was impressed by the McMurry Marching Band...a couple of weekends ago I was in Abilene visiting the in-laws and I was helping out with the West Texas Fair & Rodeo Parade and saw the McMurry Marching Band come by....I have never seen them bigger!!!  Being a former member of the World Famous Cowboy Band, we always made fun of the MC band... ;)

By the way, former Tuba/Sousaphone player here as well!!!  I miss it!!!

Ralph Turner

Kickhoe, I played for the famous HSU grad, Prof Raymond Bynum, when he was at McMurry.  We were marching about 60-65 back then, too.

When Prof Bynum was at Abilene HS, he supposedly was the first one to have a Marching Band in Texas, 1926.

Now we have never marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade,  ;), but having a real band program at McMurry has done much to improve the environment on campus.

I met Prof Bynum years ago......very nice man....after I graduated, I worked for Caldwell Music there in Abilene...I was one of Gary DeShazo's road salesmen calling on school districts out in that area......a whole lot of fun!!!  I met lots of great people....unfortunately, Brook Mays bought out Caldwell's and Brook Mays has gone bankrupt... :(

The Cowboy Band is as big as I have seen it...when I was there in the late 80's/early 90's we had about 40 guys in the band.....I say guys, because have the band is now women....I still have issues with that  >:(

Oh well, I guess we have to progress!!!!   ;D

Ron Boerger

So glad to see all the D3 schools that are either reviving their marching band tradition, or creating a new one.  Hint, hint, alma mater ...

Re Brook Mays:  they went on an acquisition binge in the late 90's but forgot about the customer service part of the equation.  I hope that the owners of the firms they bought out will get back into the business ... there's a huge hole all across the state of Texas and lots of kids and schools are desperately looking for someone to address their band/orchestra instrument needs.

Up here they have these "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS - 40% OFF!!!!" signs but neglect to tell you that the prices have apparently been marked up so that the "savings" are negligible.
