I'll go with the top 4 or 5 are capable of beating each other.

I have a question for all you alumni and those who follow the ASC closely. Who do you feel has the best junior varsity program and why?

Josh Bowerman

#2793
I'm going to say HSU, but not because of my status as a Cowboys fan.

I think they've had the largest number of kids participating at that level for the longest time.  Even in 1994 or 1995, they were fielding a JV team with 60 or so guys getting experience--which is the main reason for having a JV program.

I've heard that UMHB has started to put together a pretty decent JV program, but I haven't heard what the numbers are, as far as participation goes.  Howard Payne and McMurry have kind of gone in spurts (as far as total numbers for participation) with their JV programs over the past few years, also.

I am pleased that we are getting some stability in the JV programs in the western half of the ASC.  McMurry can play HSU, D-2 Abilene Christian, HPU and UMHB plus Cisco Junior College and have a nice 9-10 game schedule, without traveling too far.

A strong JV program is quite important to the stability of a football program, because there are numerous positions at which an 18 year old boy cannot compete with a 22 year old man.  That becomes apparent about the 2nd day of camp.  To have an opportunity to compete on the JV team and to adjust to the self-discipline that college demands is vital to the development of the student-athlete.

I judge the success of the JV program as to how many student-athletes stay as students and graduate, because they like the college experience that they have where they matriculated.

Who is going to Belton this weekend?  What are your thoughts on the game?

Zmotion10 out on 2

This would be a lot better game (Hype Wise) has TLU came into Belton undefeated.  I still think they have a very good team and very much like UMHB should have won the game at the end (Interception at the 1 yardline).

My thoughts are:

UMHB has a rush offense that is hard to stop.  TLU had a hard time with the MC back and I think you will see more of that this Saturday.  TLU also seems to hit on the big play.  I know that they won last years game against HSU on a short slant that Trahan turned into a long TD run.  (He is good at that...last week he had a 90+ yarder).  UMHB is going to have to stop the big play and run the ball hard.  I think this will be seperation Saturday.

UMHB wins big.

Bill, I am toying with the idea.  I just don't know if I want to drive back 4 1/2 hours after the late game.  ::)  What about you?  Are you thinking of going?

My thoughts are that TLU will be facing the best team they have played this year.  They got all excited after beating a beat-up Trinity and were brought down to earth by MC. I was not counting on Miss. College having a running attack this year when I picked TLU in the pick-em's contest.  As I stated after watching them beat my Roos the first week, I felt their run defense was a little soft.  If that is not shored up I think they may be in trouble.  It also appears that UMHB's run defense is very solid this year and if UMHB's cornerbacks are back (I understand the starters did not play against CNU) I don't think they have the weapons to score enough.  That being said, their backs are against the wall with one ASC loss already and that makes them dangerous.  I am sure not counting my chickens yet.  ;)
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

HPU fans who plan on attending the HPU/Paul Quinn game on Sept. 23rd need to note the time and location change.

The game will start at 1:30pm and will be played at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex.  Here is a site that shows the stadium as well as a link for a map to the field.

Thanks, dballa.  I'm still thinking about shooting that game, as it may conflict with some family plans.  I very much appreciate the information, though.

I would argue that TLU, HPU, HSU, UMHB, MC and ETBU are capable of beating each other any given Saturday. I know I am going to take heat for the last two especially ETBU. But the Tigers are always loaded with athletes and MC supposedly has some great transfers and are very good upfront. Those are my "6 or 7" teams, actually 6. I was gonna argue LC but figured with a first year head coach and history of instability, I would get thrashed and it wasnt worth the fight.

We will see as this season plays out.

Seems to me that it is still too early in the season to say either which is "the team to beat" nor which teams "could" beat the other. For several reasons:
1. Those of you (us) who have played know that the "team to beat" is the team you are playing this week. The player to beat is the one in front of you on this play.
2. Any team can beat the other. Any "favored" team that thinks otherwise is ripe for an upset.
3. As the season continues we will see what these early season wins really mean/meant. Sure, a win is a win, but, to use my favorite team (HSU) as an example: right now the wins against UWSP and (especially) Linfield look pretty big. But, that will lose its shine if both UWSP and Linfield "lose out" (which I do not think will happen).

One more thing: Go, Cowboys! ;D
