That's true about the outside chance, but hopefully SR keeps taking it game by game.  It's doubtful that they will overlook McM since they will be trying to avenge the 5 point homecoming loss from last year.  Ty Sellers practically won that game himself.  That guy was just flat out awesome.  It's hard for me to get a read on McM from their stats and games played so far.  It seems they will show up one week and not the next and then come right back the next.  Should be interesting.  Will you be making the trek to Alpine?

I won't be making the trek.

Your comment about the box scores and stats is exactly what I mean.  The "big middle" is comprised of teams that are clearly above worse teams in D3, but must play a perfect game to ensure their best chance at a win.  UMHB and HSU can get by with less than perfect games against the "middle 7", but not we in the middle.

SR97, I don't know much about SRU.  Are they a young team, senior laden?  They are having a great season and I think the surprise of the ASC.

Way to go CRU, good game against LC. Now its time to focus on MC... no looking pass the Choctaws to Whitewater. One game at time. Keep winning and secure a good seed for the playoffs.

With wins this weekend, Sul Ross can move to 5-1 on the year and LC can reach 4-2.  I think both of those are possible wins, maybe probable.  To me, this is the most surprising aspect of this season so far.

We have 3 seniors.  Not very many but all 3 are big contributors.  Then we have a few more juniors, our QB and RB being the most notable as they each have made Player of The Week in the ASC so far this year.  Our defense only starts 2 freshmen which makes a huge difference.  We have a ton of sophomores and a good number of freshmen.  A lot of the freshmen quit after the first 2-3 weeks because they don't play.  They think that since SR has had bad records that we have no talent and then they get here and bet butt hurt over not starting. We have good players, just haven't put it all together until this year.  Our freshman that have stayed around are contributors.  The core group from last year that was for the most part successful (3 wins and another 4-5 losses by a combined 20 points or so) came back this year and that has helped a lot with team chemistry.  It's a fun time here in Alpine and the Lobos are beleiving that they have a chance to win out and possibly get a Pool C bid.  Who knows, we'll see.  But it's time to get ready to host McM for homecoming.  It'll be an exciting game.

Bill McCabe

Sounds like you are building a solid program and should be competitive in the future.  If SR wins this week, you have a huge game against HSU.

SR97

If we can keep winning and keep kids happy and returning the next fall, we can stay competitive and keep winning ballgames.  And yes, that HSU game would be very exciting and interesting should we pull this one out against McM.

Speaking of HSU, I saw this today on the AD's blog:

ABILENE, Texas - After the last column on football scheduling, I received a question about the Cowboys playing a football game on the East Coast. We have attempted to schedule games with Division III schools in the East region but without success. My speculation is that the close proximity of schools in the East allows for more scheduling opportunities than the schools in the South and West region have. We will continue to look at the possibility of playing a school in the East: however, I think we will have a better chance of finding an opponent in another region.

There ya go, Rowan.  Give John Neese a call since you say it's hard to find a non-conference opponent.  Of course you may start the season with an L instead of just ending with one  ;)

Rowan has a full schedule in 2007.  Maybe in 2008 if CNU doesn't renew.

Not trying to start another pick em poll but what are some score predictions for this week?

Many thanks to you, CRU for putting that clown Dennis Dunn in his place.  I hope he realizes soon that the flag football scheme that was so successful for him in high school doesn't cut it at the collegiate level, even if it is non-scholarship.  All the equipment reservation forms in the world can't make LC into the Evangel of the ASC.

TU2698, it takes athletes.  I didn't see how they were going to be the top team this year.  Let's see how it looks in 3 years.  Recruiting to a D3 school is very different and I think that is the challenge for LC.  Trinity, UMHB, and HSU have built successful programs and that helps attract players.  UMHB's location in central Texas is almost ideal and I think HSU in west Texas is a very strong position for recruiting.  Will he stay that long?

Ralph Turner

LaCollege has 3 things in its favor:

1)  one of the few (Protestant) private liberal arts colleges in the area/state.
2)  Baptist background, even better.
3)  Central location in CenLa and close enough to deep East Texas/Golden Triangle to pull those kids, all of whom come from good football areas.

I wonder if he can make the transition to D3 mentality or is he trying to make LaCollege the D1 Baptist Notre Dame of the South.

I wish LaCollege well, because the "D3 model" is why they joined us about a decade ago!

Bill McCabe

Ralph, Do you know what kind of freshman class LC brought in this year?

Ralph Turner

Bill, I do not.

A very reputable source last week told me that UMHB added 300 men the first year they added football.  That is a significant improvement in a student body of about 2400.

The three questions that I imagine the LaCollege Board and Administration will be asking in Fall of 2007 are:

How many did we keep going into the second year?

How many more students, male and female, do we have since Fall 2005?

What did it do to our financial performance profiles for discount rate, student loan forfeiture rates and revenues over expenses?
