I agree with mhb8904 about what Dr. Bawcom has done for UMHB since his arrival as president. When my daughter started college, it was primarily a girl's school. The basketball team was good but played in a cracker box sized gym, and there was no football team at all. I knew of the college because my kids went to church camp there in the summer, but there wasn't much to do on any given weekend to justify driving 2 and 1/2 hours from Houston.

I loved the cracker box gym.  Maybee gym was the loudest, most unfriendly to away teams place I've ever been.  When I started at UMHB the BBall team was horrible (the first game I attended we were pasted by 50+ points by TLC), but I watched the rise of the program and even got to go to the NAIA tournament in Tulsa when they went.  Many people do not realize that UMHB had ever been a Basketball & Baseball school, but I remember when we had transfers from Auburn and UTEP, and our starting point guard was the reigning Hoop-it-up slam dunk champion.  For those of you who missed the NAIA era in MHB sports history, it included a baseball team that was runner up at the NAIA world series (on that team was a young man named Mike Meggers who set the NAIA record for homeruns that season [just checked he still holds that record at 36], and if I'm not mistaken he also set the record for Home runs in a world series, was named MVP and Player of the Year.), a basketball team that went to the national tournament, a womens golf team that won a national championship, and i think a men's golf national championship.

Also playing baseball at UMHB was Buddy Groom, a lefty pitcher who played in the majors from 1992 - 2005.  Buddy played football for me when I was coaching at Red Oak, TX.

If I'm not mistaken Buddy also made a sizable donation to his alma matter. ;D
Buddy went to school with my brother.  The interesting thing about that is that my non-athlete brother, meaning he did not participate in school sports, lived in the dorm with the ball players.  Made for some interesting stories.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

Sorry about the last post I was trying to trim the quote down to what my comment was referencing.
Oh well, does anybody want to go out on a limb and make a prediction about the UMHB v UW-Whitewater game, since Chris Allman didn't in his ATR? Just messing with you Chris.  Good article and it made the HSU and SR game more interesting in my mind.
That is another good question. Does anybody think that SR will be HSU?

There is always a chance.  It will be a tough task to go to Abilene for HSU's homecoming and win, but SR has the talent.  HSU will be ready, but how ready?  Will they look past this game since the team coming to Abilene is still just "Sul Ross" and  "hasn't really beaten anyone to date".  I am curious to see.  Looking at film, both teams stack up evenly.  Sul Ross has chartered a bus to bring 50 students and the cheerleaders to the game.  Also there are many parents who are close to Abilene and will make the trip.  Add all that in with the HSU homecoming crowd and the atmosphere should be wild and crazy.  I can't wait to play.  Hopefully our offense and defense both show up Saturday and we execute.  It should be a great game and Saturday can't get here soon enough.  I hope I can meet some of the HSU posters after the game.  I'll be wearing #97, obviously.  Any other thoughts on the game?

If SRSU can rush for 169 on HSU, they'll give HSU a tough game and have a good shot at the win.  HSU's Dline is not as stout against the run as I'd like it to be, and ball control could be the key.  on the other hand, HSU can score quick and often.  SRSU allowed MHB to pass for 139, when MHB wasn't passing much, and let HPU throw all over them.  If SRSU can't get to Jordan and make him mess up, SRSU has no chance.  JNeal and crew will eat them up!

You're absolutely right about pressuring Neal.  He has to  be uncomfortable for us to pull it off.  As far as the passing yards given up to HPU, who knows what that was all about.  Corrections have been made though and the last two teams SR has faced have been dominated by our defense.  HSU's offense is potent, but so is SR's.  This game will come down to the kicking game, turnovers, and time of possesion in my opinion.  (But don't most games come down to that, ha ha).  Should be fun.

I would like to know more about Sully's defensive front 4.  How have they performed this year?  How many sacks?  TFLs? Who is the leader of those guys?  That may be where the game is won or lost.

Same with HSU.

Sully has 36 TFL this season, but has given up 55
And they have 11 sacks on the year

HSU has 28 and given up 31
w 10 sacks

South Regional Rankings
1. Wesley 4-0 7-0
2. Christopher Newport 6-0 6-1
3. Mary Hardin-Baylor 6-1 6-1
4. Trinity (Texas) 6-1 6-1
5. Carnegie Mellon 6-0 7-0
6. Hardin-Simmons 5-1 5-1
7. Dickinson 6-1 6-1
8. Washington and Jefferson 5-1 6-1
9. Washington and Lee 6-1 6-1
10. Averett 5-2 5-2

Man, I definitely thought Hardin Simmons would be a little higher. I know that they have a loss, but I would still consider them #4 in front of Trinity and Carnegie Mellon.  I agree for the most part with the rest, well maybe not agree, but I can see why the top three are in the order they are.  Anybody else have any views on the rankings?  These rankings would also be greatly changed by a Sully win huh SR 97?

I wonder about the rankings as well.

HSU has a higher QOWI: (#22) 10.143 (miscalculated. Probably should be 10.167) vs (T#29) 9.857, but this is a funciton of playing fewer games (A win instead of the LaCollege cancellation would raise their QOWI 10.283.)
Both have wins over ETBU.
Trinity has a better record in South Region games, 6-1 vs HSU's 5-1.
Trinity has a loss to Texas Lutheran; HSU plays the Bulldogs on Nov 4th, and a chance to gain an edge on Trinity.
HSU has a win over (West Region Ranked team) Linfield and a loss to UMHB (1-1).
Trinity has no games versus regionally ranked teams.

Carnegie Mellon must be geting credit for the perfect record.  Their QOWI is 9.50.

Ralph Turner

I actually calculated HSU's QOWI as 9.50 (57 points by 6 games).

That would suggest the ranking as low as it is.

Bill McCabe

Ralph,  Won't wins over HSU and TLU raise them in the rankings?
