It's difficult for the HSU Defense to stop the refs from walking off a questionable 5 yard illegal substitution penalty on a fourth down punt play giving the Cru a first down where both teams have players going on an off the field.

Too bad the NCAA forced the number 2 and 3 seeds in the south region - and from the same conference - to play in the first round.

Congrats to UMHB and HFA!!! ::)

And "thank you"  the 19 Seniors of the HSU football team for 2006.

You've played well and gave us a good season.

Good luck to you in the future.  Have a good life!

UMHB, see you next year! ;)

Too bad HSU and UMHB could not have met in a later round... thanks NCAA.

What a great game.  I was impressed with Jordan Neal.  He is a tremendous competitor.  Several times he escaped a heavy rush to make completions or scramble for good yardage.  HSU's defense could not stop UMHB's outside running game.  I thought the difference would be how well HSU could stop the UMHB offense.

As far as the penalty, HSU had 12 men on the field and one was trying to get off when the penalty was called by the back judge and the side judge.  The same penalty had been called on UMHB earlier in the game.  That was a killer for HSU, as momentum was clearly on their side.

Bill,

Thanks for the insights and observations.

Josh Welch had an outstanding day for the Cru.  He executed the option almost flawlessly and had several good runs.  He looked like the QB that led UMHB to the Stagg Bowl.  Hope he can make a repeat.

I was impressed with the corners for HSU.  I didn't remember them being that good or fast.  They were all over the Cru receivers.  The front 7 for HSU could not match the speed of the UMHB offense.

Kelly Boggs

Bill,

I am with you on that.

I will be at the game with W & J.

In 2004, UMHB had a huge speed advantage with W&J.  I don't know anything about them this year, but I'm glad their coming to Texas.  We will be there for the game.  What a great way to spend Thanksgiving weekend.   :)

I agree, Bill, I agree.

I, too, will be present and accounted for.

Some interesting stats from today's game:

UMHB 21 First Downs   HSU 12
UMHB 371 rushing        HSU 14
UMHB 36 passing          HSU 288

Time of Possession:  UMHB 33:31   HSU 26:29

Rollins 27 rushes for 158 yards
Thrasher 16 rushes for 132 yards
Welch 10 for 79 yards.

HSU 27.5 punting average.

Neal was sacked 3 times for 31 yards.  I thought his line did a good job of protecting him.  There were several dropped passes by his receivers.  He was able to get away from the rush.  When he was knocked down, he got right up and threw again.

Congratulations to the CRU!!!

Just wanted you guys to know that CruAlum39 won his game today 21-7.  His team will play the winner of Houston Furr and Houston Davis next week at 1:00 pm at Delmar Stadium in Houston!!! ;D ;D ;D

I think I got a perfect score in the pickems and an extra point for the UMHB/HSU point spread. ;D  ;D It would have been another great weekend except that all three of my district schools in the playoff lost last night.  :( :(

Go Roos!!  Go Cru!!!  Go Caney Creek Panthers !!!!!
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

I was at the game.  Bill is right about the call of the penalty.  The confusion that I have is that I did not see the deep snap in punt formation for 4th & 5 at about the HSU 45.  Also, the referee specifically states that the HSU is not charged with the timeout, so he must have acknowledged the request for a timeout.

IMHO, that irrevocably changed the momentum in the game.  UMHB breaks a 20-yd run and then scores to go haead 31-21.  The final safety was a QB pressure.  Neal lost the ball and an HSU lineman fell on it in the end zone.

UMHB has a good defense, but they are vulnerable to the deep pass.  HSU hit a 50 yd gainer.  McMurry was even able to break 3 long ones, 2 for TD's.  I am not worried about W&J doing that, but Wesley is a different matter.

If UMHB cannot pass, then they will have trouble if their defense cannot win the field position game.

The first 2 scores for UMHB was short field scores, the drvies beginning in HSU territory.  Defense wins Championships, so that is how it will happen.
