Based on his success, I think I would take Welch from UMHB at QB.  The rest of the positions I think could be a toss up with several players.

Doesn't the QB from MissCollege that was injured in the first game return this fall?

Didn't Galusha graduate?
My bad, sorry.  I thought he had one more year (1 yr @ Rice, 2 @ H-SU).  Guess I lost track since moving away from the greater Abilene metropolitan area. ;)

The reason I don't take Welch is because he doesn't do much more than call plays and hand off.  Don't get me wrong, UMHB has had tons of success and he still has to call plays, read defenses, call audibles, etc.  In that aspect he's right there with the rest.  But I was going off athleticism and play-making ability.  He lacks it there because 95% of the time he is handing it to someone else who does the work for the yards.  But I understand that he is the best option for the UMHB offense.  I don't think he could go to another ASC school that throws the majority of the time and have very much success.

Yes he does.  He's pictured on MC's website participating in spring drills.  I spoke to him after our last game in Mississippi last year and he said he was already rehabbing nicely and feeling good.  I'm sure he's come along nicely since then.

maybe one out of his three years, his last 2 years were average.

SR97, I think you underestimate Welch.  He has been in the playoffs every year he has been at UMHB and won games.  His freshman year, UMHB advanced because he played great, including his passing.  I'm not sure the other QBs in the conference could take his place at UMHB.  Wins are what count in the long run and he has plenty of them.

Earthquake near Pampa, TX

I wonder if one of the football players dropped a weight on the gym floor.  :-\  ???

For the sake of off-season conversation,

Does Welch make the difference at HSU or anywhere else and lead them to a conference championship?

Does a QB from another school in the conference lead UMHB to the conference title as well?

I think that latter is more likely.  :)

Ralph,
Adam Shaffer is healthy and will be a third year sophomore next year after starting every game his freshman year in 2005. In his last seven starts including the first half against Millsaps last year, he has thrown for more than 2,000 yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

MC senior wideout Jake Allen will be on the short list of top returning receivers in Division III this season after going over 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns last year. In three games a year ago against playoff teams (UMHB, HSU, Millsaps) he had 20 catches for 367 yards and four touchdowns.

Already looking forward to football season.

Ralph,  UMHB runs a lot of option and I'm not sure some of the better passers in the ASC would be effective at running the option.  I should have said earlier that Welch probably wouldn't be as effective in other offenses.  Would he be a Jordan Neal at HSU?  Probably not?  Would Neal have been as effective an option QB as he was as a passer at HSU?  I don't think so.
